SimpsonI first read this in England in 1978. Lyall is an English treasure that American publishers largely overlooked. Solid action, great characters, a little discrete romance, and "a man's got to do what a man's got to do." For pure entertainment, it doesn't get any better. 'Terrific – when better novels of suspense are written, lead me to them' P. G. WodehouseMaking a threadbare living flying charter cargos of dubious legitimacy around the Mediterranean, Jack Clay's ambition of starting his own chartering company remains a distant dream. All this changes in Athens when Clay bumps into an old wartime buddy helping the former Nawab of Tungabhadra recover his stolen fortune. Clay joins the hunt, but he is not the only one looking; there are many men – and women – who are prepared to lie and cheat, murder and maim, in order to get to the diamonds first.First published in 1961, The Wrong Side of the Sky was Gavin Lyall's debut novel and became an international bestseller.'A model thriller … Like its hard-flying hero, it's a natural' New York Herald Tribune Terrific -- when better novels of suspense are written, lead me to them. * P.G. Wodehouse * A model thriller...plotted like a detective story, full of authentic detail on flying, played in exotic locales, peopled with beautiful gals and glamorous gents. Like its hard-flying hero, it's a natural. * New York Herald Tribune * There should be dancing in the library aisles to greet the debut of Gavin Lyall, who proves in his first novel that it's possible to combine all the exotic attractions with a first-rate suspense plot, which would command taut attention whatever its background. * The New York Times * A wonderfully entertaining tale...a well-done piece of international intrigue. * Van Wyck Mason *About the AuthorGavin Lyall (1932-2003) was a Royal Airforce pilot, journalist, and prolific author of spy and aviation thrillers. His years as a Royal Air Force pilot lent his fast paced, tautly written aviation thrillers authenticity. His first novel, The Wrong Side of the Sky, was inspired by his personal experiences in the Libyan and Greece and became an international bestseller. He also worked as a journalist, first with the Picture Post and the BBC, then as the Sunday Times' aviation correspondent. January 2011 Boulevard of Broken Dreams I pride myself on being one of the staunchest supporters of the Great British Post Office; or more specifically, Her Majesty’s elite corps of postmen and women who defy the odds to make sure the mail gets through whatever the conditions. It is with a heavy heart, however, that I have to admit that somewhere along the line, my invitation to the red carpet Leicester Square premiere of the film London Boulevard seems to have gone missing. I was so looking forward to mingling with the stars of the film – exchanging Cockney accents with Colin Farrell, fashion tips with Keira Knightley and Anna Friel, and hints on embroidery with Ray Winstone – not to mention, of course, meeting up again with the author of the original novel, Ken Bruen. When London Boulevard was first published in 2001 by the legendary Do Not Press (the new film tie-in version is from Transworld Ireland), Ken Bruen was not then associated with the tag ‘the Godfather of Irish crime writing’ or at least not outside various public houses in Camden Town. He was best known for his short story Mother’s Ruin in the cult anthology Fresh Blood 2 edited by Maxim Jakubowski and...er...myself; and for the novel The Hackman Blues which was reviewed in the Daily Telegraph as “a frantic and often very funny example of a London noir thriller as a manic, gay hit-man attempts to double-cross an Irish gangster with a Gene Hackman obsession” by a discerning critic (..er...myself, actually).

Overlooked GemBy Michael T. SimpsonDon't read this if you are under 40 and prefer your movies with CGI and lots of explosions. Do read this if you like older women, fine wines, and quirky, well-written novels. I had read almost all of Lyall's earlier work, but missed this one. Good twists, Lovely but not all that nice characters. This is suspense fiction from about 50 years ago, but it holds up well. Enjoy!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Blame the Dead by Gavin Lyall Master of mystery. G avin Lyall sat at the top table of mystery writers thanks to a series of pacy, tautly written aviation thrillers, published in the Sixties during a kind of mini-boom for British adventure writing. But in the course of Lyall's long writing career - he was writing almost up to his death last week at the age of 70 - he successfully changed tack twice, in the Eighties and again in the Nineties. Lyall made an early success of writing thanks to National Service. The Birmingham-born son of an accountant went straight from his city school (King Edward VI ) into the RAF in 1951 and his two years as a pilot officer lent authenticity to his early novels. Demobbed, he went to Cambridge to read English, then started work as a journalist for Picture Post. He was a full-time journalist until the early Sixties, ending up as aviation correspondent for the Sunday Times. (He also met, and in 1958 married, fellow journalist Katharine Whitehorn. They have two sons.) He made his fiction debut in 1961 with The Wrong Side of the Sky, a thriller set in Greece and Libya which examines the dilemma of an honest pilot invited by an old wartime friend to work with him on the illegal ('wrong') side of flying operations. The novel was an international bestseller and Lyall followed it with two further superb aviation adventures. The Most Dangerous Game (1963) won the CWA Silver Dagger and Midnight Plus One (1965) won the Gold.

ÖZFIRAT The spy novels of John le Carré mostly revolve around the concepts of loyalty and betrayal and are imbibed with a sense of paranoia against the evil figure. In Le Carré’s fiction, political betrayal usually goes parallel with personal betrayal and the clash of duty with individual conscience is a common theme. John le Carré is the author persona created by David Cornwell, a former officer of the British Secret Service who also served as an intelligence agent during the Cold War era. Although it is not a must to go back to the author’s life in literary criticism, in Le Carré’s case, it is his insider experience about the clandestine world that distinguishes him as a realistic author and gives his critically acclaimed novels their merit. The aim of this study is to do a close reading of three novels by John le Carré, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1974), Our Game (1995) and The Constant Gardener (2001), in order to examine the elements of paranoia and betrayal in the light of the historical and political atmosphere of their respective era.

There is a fair concentration of them at the western end of the England/Scotland Border country, where they boast an Elliott (or Elliot, the preferred local version) tartan, and are commemorated in Tullie House Museum in Carlisle as among the most loathed and vicious of the clans of Border reivers. But my father’s family can trace no connection with Scotland. There is a family tradition of some sort of Huguenot origin, but this is not supported by any evidence. However there is abundant evidence of Elliotts in the Wisborough Green area of Sussex, dating back at least to 1454.

  • Women in the Contemporary American Mystery Novel: a Study in the Sociology of Literature
WOMEN IN THE CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN MYSTERY NOVEL: A STUDY IN THE SOCIOLOGY OF LITERATURE Kathleen M. Carroll, Ph.D. The University of Connecticut, 196*4 This study examines the portrayal of women in the contemporary American mystery novel. One out of every four books sold today is a mystery novel, but very little research has been done on the treatment of women characters in mystery fiction. Most of the research on mystery novels has focused on the history of the mystery and the role or function of this form of fiction. The work that has been done on women in mystery novels has mainly looked at single authors, or at the woman detective. This study examines both women detectives and nondetectives, the latter group being far more numerous than the former. The study also looks at the relationship between certain author characteristics—such as an author's sex, age, or country of origin—and the treatment of male and female characters in Kathleen M. Carroll—The University of Connecticut, 1984 mystery novels. A sample of 163 mystery novels from three time periods—1955, 1965, and 1975—was randomly selected, and each of the sample novels was content analyzed. The content analysis included a code sheet for each major and secondary character in the novels. Notes on the plots and themes employed in the novels were also taken. The findings indicate that men and women characters in mystery novels are portrayed very differently, and that the characterization of women is heavily influenced by the traditional sexrole stereotypes. Women characters in mystery novels are generally portrayed as passive, dependent, and emotional, while men characters are portrayed as active, aggressive, and instrumental.
