He first learned to fly fixed-wing aircraft in 1962. In 1965 Sisk enlisted in the U.S. Army under the Warrant Officer Flight Training Program. After graduation from rotary-wing flight school, he served two years in Southeast Asia, accumulating over 1,800 flying hours. His first year was spent flying assault helicopters with the 1st Air Cavalry. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star and 23 air medals. His last assignment in the Army was as a test pilot for weapon systems on helicopters.
