Girls are often sold into the sex trafficking world by their parents out of need for rupees. In Nepal, over ten thousand girls are trafficked into India each year. Growing Feet is a non-profit organization that aims to try to lower the number of girls that are conned into India borders by providing women and children with the knowledge of human trafficking, intercepting the victims before they cross the border, and providing safe houses to get them back on their feet. Nepal is a landlocked country located in southern Asia with borders of China to the north and India to the south. Nepal is home to over 30 million people and has a constant amount of tourists passing through. Along with the people, Nepal also houses the world’s largest and third largest mountains. There are a number of marked border crossings into India and no papers are required to travel through whereas the border of Nepal and China is closed and they monitor who travels across. Nepal is a Federal Democratic Republic country that runs much like the United States. There are three branches of government: judicial, legislative and executive. Majority of Nepal’s imports and exports are with India for the reason that they have a free trade agreement. Many locals travel throughout Nepal by walking or taking the public bus. When traveling to Nepal, there are no rental cars for the reason the many of the roads are paved and contain many potholes and the road are very unsafe for inexperienced drivers. Telephone, internet, and radio services have greatly risen and continue to be privately owned in Nepal. Women of Nepal continue to be trafficked into Nepal without the education of prevention, interception of danger and the secure place to build confidence. The International Marketing Project aims to bring attention to issues around the world and ways to counteract the problems. The illegal acts of human trafficking happening in Nepal need to be handled in order for no more girls to be put through the ghastly crimes. Nepal Issue In first world countries, education is available for presumably everyone; whether its public school, private school, or online school, there’s an opportunity for education. Most kids don’t have a job until they’re in high school and even then it’s only part time. But in developing countries like Nepal, education is not offered to everyone. Some children live to far away to attend school; some don’t have the finances; while others are forced to work by the time they can walk. Some parents are in such need for money that they sell their daughter to a man that promises that they’ll have a better life in a foreign country. Only they don’t, they’re forced to work as sex slaves and are treated like property. They are victims to one of the most horrifying 3 Raelynn Leffler Nepal crimes in the world, human trafficking. A solution to help stop human trafficking relies on getting educated of what the human trafficking is, how it affects the people of Nepal, and why they should care about this issue. The illegal movement of people, normally for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation is what defines human trafficking; in other words, slavery. Trafficking takes place all over the world, but is especially high in poor areas of Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. Trafficking is the fastest-growing business of organized crime in the world. Over 27 million people were trafficked worldwide in 2012; only 46,570 of which were identified. Held captive and used for labor, trade, and sex is what 10,000-15,000 girls experience due to being trafficked into India each year. Traffickers prey on uneducated women and children deceiving them to think that they would have a better life in India, where an education and jobs are offered. It’s not until they reach India where it’s too late to change their mind that they learn the cold reality; that there are not education opportunities and they are being forced to work, often times never receiving any pay. Some girls are kidnapped when walking the city. They’re drugged and smuggled across the Indo-Nepal border and forced into brothels. The tactics of traffickers is a mile long, and many girls who are intercepted before they reach India have no idea what human trafficking is. Girls, as young as seven, are stripped of their childhood and forced to work for long hours every day. It’s not just cooking and cleaning that they have to do, they are used for sexual exploitation in brothels as well. Imagine if it was your daughter, sister, cousin, or friend, would it be worth it to save them from the horrific future that lies ahead of them when they are conned into believing a lie? The answer is always going to be yes, it would be worth it to save just one because it would start a chain reaction and eventually it would lead to saving thousands of girls. Slavery was outlawed more than one hundred years ago, yet there are more slaves today than there has ever been. The future of stopping human trafficking depends on the people’s knowledge of the issue. The aftereffects of the girls who were once trafficked will lead people to want to help just one girl in danger of being trafficked. 4 Raelynn Leffler Nepal Non-Profit Growing Feet Mission Statement Educating communities about the dangers of human trafficking, stopping the crimes at border monitoring stations and helping the victims of sex-trafficking
