  • Ideal Homes? Social Change and Domestic Life
IDEAL HOMES? Until now, the ‘home’ as a space within which domestic lives are lived out has been largely ignored by sociologists. Yet the ‘home’ as idea, place and object consumes a large proportion of individuals’ incomes, and occupies their dreams and their leisure time while the absence of a physical home presents a major threat to both society and the homeless themselves. This edited collection provides for the first time an analysis of the space of the ‘home’ and the experiences of home life by writers from a wide range of disciplines, including sociology, criminology, psychology, social policy and anthropology. It covers a range of subjects, including gender roles, different generations’ relationships to home, the changing nature of the family, transition, risk and alternative visions of home. Ideal Homes? provides a fascinating analysis which reveals how both popular images and experiences of home life can produce vital clues as to how society’s members produce and respond to social change. Tony Chapman is Head of Sociology at the University of Teesside. Jenny Hockey is Senior Lecturer in the School of Comparative and Applied Social Sciences, University of Hull. IDEAL HOMES? Conference paper title : The place and status of knowledge in Work Based Learning Abstract : This paper seeks to examine some of the epistemological issues which relate to the debate concerning the justification of Work Based Learning in the HE curriculum. It will take account of post-modern perspectives on the theory of knowledge and of the so-called knowledge revolution and the impact these have had on the University. The perceived divide between academic and vocational knowledge, universal and local knowledge, and Mode 1 and Mode 2 knowledge will be discussed, and it will be argued that such ways of thinking are inappropriate and a hindrance in any attempt to arrive at a satisfactory way of understanding the place and status of knowledge in Work Based Learning.

#BECOMEUNSTOPPABLE 2 / / 3 CONGRATULATIONS We are delighted that you have chosen to study at the University of Salford and wish you a memorable and rewarding time here. Use this guide to give you the best start to your University journey. We recommend that you read through each page and refer to it and our Welcome website, during your first few weeks. We wish you lots of success as you begin your new journey! @UoS_Students /studentsuos @uos_students @salforduni 4 / / 5 Even though the government has now said that universities can return without restriction, our planning and timetable has already been in train for some months, so we are keeping with the approach we’ve set out above. That’s because we know you need your timetables for your first term to be fixed and ready ahead of the start of term so that you can plan. We’ve listened and learnt a lot from our students and there are elements from the move online that we’ll be keeping because of this. There are some sessions that will be online because our current students have told us that it’s the best way to deliver them. Where we have found new and better ways of doing things that benefit the student experience and reflect the world of work, we’ll be evolving these and A MESSAGE FROM OUR refining them as we move into the future. Where it is practical and beneficial to students, we’ll be PRO-VICE CHANCELLOR recording sessions. This is not a substitute for attending the session in person, but does allow you to watch back and DR SAM GROGAN review what you’ve learnt and supplement that face-to- face contact.
