These experiences will be seen in personal journeys and in relation to the friends, families, and communities of this group. Anthropological categories emerged in the research, which have given meaning to this experience in its modern social and cultural setting. Results show that these categories point to an association with what Paul calls the hardening of Israel (Romans 11). Paul understands this phenomenon as a warning (v25a), a mystery (v25b), partial (v25c), and temporary (v25d and v26a). My research attempts to understand hardening as a genuine and current experience, which I identify as part of what I call an Implied Social Contract (ISC). ii Dedication I first heard the term ‘Implied Social Contract’ from Moishe Rosen in 1983.     Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. Lauren Winner's best-selling memoir of her conversion from Reform Judaism to Orthodox Judaism and then on to evangelical Christianity is one of the best reads of the last decade, and her story illustrates one type of conversion by Jews to the Christian faith. Her aesthetically-prompted and liturgically-shaped conversion story is as difficult to plot as it is joyous to read—she tells us about things that do not matter to conversion theory while she does not tell us about things that do matter. In her defense, she did not write her story so the theoretically-inclined could analyze her con- version. Here is a defining moment in her conversion story:1 My favorite spot at The Cloisters was a room downstairs called the Treasury. In glass cases were small fragile reliquaries and icons and prayer books. In one case was a tiny psalter and Book of Hours. It lay open to a picture of Christ's arrest. I could barely read the Latin. Sometimes I would stand in front of that psalter for an hour. I wanted to hold it in my hand. My boyfriend in college was Dov, an Orthodox Jew from Westchester County whom I had met through Rabbi M. Dov thought all this [her studying American Christianity and interest in things Christian] was weird. He watched me watch the Book of Hours, and he watched me write endless papers about religious re- vivals in the South.

    Remembering a Great Man – Rabbi Gunther Plaut On His Fifth Yahrzeit For The Jewish Ledger March 2017 I am writing these words calling to mind the fifth yahrzeit of Rabbi Gunther Plaut. He passed away in the winter of 2012. As someone who served as his Assistant Rabbi in Toronto for the six months before his retirement and then had the opportunity to watch him in “retirement” for the next five years, I remain in awe of my teacher. Rabbi Plaut was Rabbi Plaut. Although we live in an age of informality, I never called him by his first name, Gunther. Hardly anyone else did either. Why? Not because he insisted on the formal title, but because he was a man of such stature. He was a giant. A grand smile, boundless energy, and brilliance. He was Rabbi Plaut. In Toronto, when the Free Soviet Jewry movement was galvanizing world Jewry, Rabbi Plaut was the person who spoke at major rallies. When the PLO was at its terrorist peak, Plaut was one of the most fearless and outspoken defenders of Israel anywhere. When he “retired,” he became Vice-Chair of the Ontario Human Rights Commission. In keeping with his convictions, Rabbi Plaut was also the public leader who brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Toronto for his first Canadian appearance in the mid 60’s. The Rabbi's life was in some sense quite charmed. He led congregations in Chicago and St. Paul before arriving in Toronto. While living in Minnesota, he became friendly with two locals who were destined to become national figures (much like him).
