Remembering a Great Man – Rabbi Gunther Plaut On His Fifth Yahrzeit For The Jewish Ledger March 2017 I am writing these words calling to mind the fifth yahrzeit of Rabbi Gunther Plaut. He passed away in the winter of 2012. As someone who served as his Assistant Rabbi in Toronto for the six months before his retirement and then had the opportunity to watch him in “retirement” for the next five years, I remain in awe of my teacher. Rabbi Plaut was Rabbi Plaut. Although we live in an age of informality, I never called him by his first name, Gunther. Hardly anyone else did either. Why? Not because he insisted on the formal title, but because he was a man of such stature. He was a giant. A grand smile, boundless energy, and brilliance. He was Rabbi Plaut. In Toronto, when the Free Soviet Jewry movement was galvanizing world Jewry, Rabbi Plaut was the person who spoke at major rallies. When the PLO was at its terrorist peak, Plaut was one of the most fearless and outspoken defenders of Israel anywhere. When he “retired,” he became Vice-Chair of the Ontario Human Rights Commission. In keeping with his convictions, Rabbi Plaut was also the public leader who brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Toronto for his first Canadian appearance in the mid 60’s. The Rabbi's life was in some sense quite charmed. He led congregations in Chicago and St. Paul before arriving in Toronto. While living in Minnesota, he became friendly with two locals who were destined to become national figures (much like him). -

I would also like to thank the staff at the London Metropolitan Archives and at the Parkes Memorial Library, University of Southampton. 1 Introduction On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was assassinated in Sarajevo, Serbia. With assurances of help in a war against Russia from Kaiser Wilhelm in Germany, Austria declared war on Serbia a month later. On August 1, Germany declared war on Russia and against France on the third. And so Europe was plunged into a disastrous and bloody war that no one wanted. Britain could easily have remained aloof from these events on mainland Europe, but with the violation of Belgian sovereignty by Germany, she was obliged to uphold her treaty commitments and join the war against the Central Powers. During periods of war, populations and peoples come together to present a strong and united front against the enemy. -

‘ There are three types of men’: Lionel de Rothschild and The Jewish War Services Committee, 1915–1919 As many countries mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I, Archivist Justin Cavernelis-Frost considers the role of New Court as a recruiting office for Jewish soldiers, and remembers the ultimate sacrifice the English Rothschild family paid in the conflict. The Rothschild family, who had helped to create ‘modern’ Europe through their businesses and marriages linking the continent’s influential families, were deeply affected by the crisis of World War I. Like royalty, they were forced to abjure family solidarity and to give their loyalty to the countries of their adoption; England, France, Austria and Germany.1 By 1919, 70 million military personnel had been mobilised in one of the largest wars in history.2 Over a million men from across the British Empire lost their lives on active service between 1914 and 1918, and many thousands more suffered physical injuries and mental scars that affected the rest of their lives.3 The war was the catalyst for major political and social changes, and by the war’s end, the German, Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires had ceased to exist, and the map of Europe had been re-drawn.4 Opposite, from left ‘There are three types of men: those who hear the call and obey; those who delay; and – the others. 10.14324/111.444.jhs.2016v47.014 Royal Jews: Jewish Life in Berkshire from the Readmission till Today jonathan romain In a previous article for Transactions,1 I covered the remarkable history of the medieval river Jews – those who arrived after the Norman Conquest, settled in London and then gradually moved out along the River Thames to places where Jews today go for Sunday picnics (to Windsor, Marlow, Henley), which were certainly not high-density Jewish areas in the Middle Ages, but where there was a Jewish presence. That came to an end following the expulsion of the Jews in 1290 and lasted until their readmission by Cromwell in 1656. In reality there were a few exceptions by those who made brief appearances in the area under examination, Berkshire (but occasionally straying across its borders to South Buckinghamshire and parts of Oxfordshire). One such individual was found in 1450 living near Eton College, which had been established ten years earlier by Henry VI. Once discovered, the only way he could remain in the country was to be baptized. This occurred under the auspices of the king and so he took the name Henry of Eton, presumably a way of reflecting both his loyalty to the monarch and his place of residence at the time. He went to live in the Domus Conversorum in London, but left after three years, after which his whereabouts are unknown.2 A much longer resident was a Jew who converted and took the name Henry of Windsor, who stayed there from 1488 until his death in 1509.3 Everything changed after Cromwell: Jews emerged in London and later migrated to the Home Counties, the area west of London covering Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire. -

Cowen, C. “The Evolution of the Melbourne Beth Din”, Australian Journal of Jewish Studies XXXIII (2020): 193-216 The Evolution of the Melbourne Beth Din Chaim Cowen Abstract This article commences with a historical overview of the Melbourne Beth Din (MBD), Australia’s longest standing Rabbinical court. Of particular focus is the cause of its inception, its relationship with Melbourne’s various Hebrew Congregations, the key personalities who led and participated in its operations, and the communal context within which it operated. The second part of the article explores elements within the Melbourne Jewish community who, dissatisfied with the MBD, challenged its centrality within the community by forming alternate institutions. In addition, the shift over time in its relationship with its founder, the Chief Rabbinate of the British Empire, is analysed. Last, while the MBD primarily concerned itself with matters of personal status and ritual matters, its dealings in civil arbitration are discussed, which pave the way towards a greater understanding of the context for recent rulings in the Victorian and New South Wales Supreme Courts in relation to civil arbitration awards issued by ad hoc Batei Din. Introduction Batei Din (Jewish religious courts, sing. Beth Din) in Melbourne and Sydney have in recent times come to the attention of the public, in the context of their awards and procedure in civil arbitration being challenged in the Australian courts. In addressing the issues which have presented themselves in these cases, it is important to “see where the feet grow from”1 in order to gain a more holistic understanding of the issues which have presented themselves of late. -

HASSIDIM CONFRONTING MODERNITY William Shaffir N the late 1960s, I knew virtually nothing about hassidic Jews when I began researching their lifestyle and community organiza- Ition. But I still vividly recall how I was struck then by their distinc- tive presence along the Park Avenue area in the Mile End district of Montreal. Many of my peers mockingly referred to them as the ‘Park Avenue White Sox’ (after the famous Chicago White Sox baseball team) because some of the men in the community wore breeches tied below the knee, so that their white-stockinged calves were visible below their long black coats and slipper-like shoes. Those hassidim not only appeared out of place but, to my surprise, seemed untouched by the secular influences of the wider society.1 At around this time, in November 1969, I noted in my set of field notes: I spent a good part of the morning walking the streets around Park Avenue to get a feel for where the hassidim live in this part of the city. I was there around mid-morning. Hassidic men are walking briskly as though they are on a mission. No one strolls leisurely. My casual strolls, at various times of the day, allowed me to also observe scores of women pushing baby carriages and young boys, with lengthy earlocks, playing outside their homes. I wonder if this community has experienced any major changes that have impacted on their chosen way of life? I imagine this will become one underlying theme of my research. How can it not be? Based on a few conversations that I’ve had with persons that seem knowledgeable about hassidim — mainly non-hassidic Jews I should point out — they have managed the impossible.
