The Jew: a Vision The End of Days The Jew, with his combination of Heart and Soul – We know but little about the End of Days, Prophet and Priest, only Divine Mind to control – Except for what the navi Yeshaya says –

For G-d, in His wisdom, deprived the Jew of his Land – Complaining that the Jews ‘anger Me to My face’, As the Prophet declaimed - punishment was at hand, That this was the cause of the suffering of our race.

And the sins of soul, for which Priest used to atone, But the navi did say that Jews would be recreated as ‘Joy’ Became seeds of miracles, in a Land unsown; And Yeshaya spoke as a Man, not as a boy – Saying that Hashem would let Zion give birth While History tried, the Jew, to the depths of his Soul, Granting, finally, Peace – for all this is worth. And tried, with success, the Heart to control, To Jerusalem, and the Jews in their holy Land – The Jewish mind overdeveloped became – Having sworn to Avraham that his seed as A mind that Religion, on its own, became unable to uncountable be as sand; maintain; For Hashem did not let him, his only son, kill, Until the nations turned on the talented race, As this could never have been His will; And G-d Himself, from the Jew, hid His face – But, as Avraham passed his tenth, and final test – A face He had shown to His prophet Moses only; The Sacrifice was not, finally, consummated, in the A face to be redeemed in a Vision holy, Christian West –

To eventually reward, the Jew, for his constant virtue, The remainder of our People being given leave to live, In being true to the Law, the commandments he did Though, with enemies all around we had to strive; persue. For Hashem’s face will be restored to the Jews once again, For History, which brought a seeming Eternity of grief, A new Revelation will come, at the end of Time, when – Will culminate in an end, that will make this eternity seem brief. The wolf with the lamb will, by a miracle, lie down – As the seeds of Peace will, with a holy Temple be sown. FAMILY HAMAOR Miracles in Poland by Rabbi Garson This past June, I was deeply moved to lead a 5th trip to Poland group of 50 if they felt claustrophobic, despite the doors being together with 50 community members and a very special wide open. The person is basically ‘willing’ themselves better without realising it. Studies usually compare a treatment to placebo to ascertain if it works, but the placebo effect on its own cannot be dismissed.

As a pharmacologist by training, and a biology teacher by profession, I am an evidence-based consumer of medicine. The placebo effect is a real, measured effect and personally I believe that most alternative health practices tap into this effect, to no detriment to anyone, unless the practitioner starts advocating removal of actual medication.

Homeopathy Let us look at other, perhaps more problematic Jewishly, alternative health practices. Let us examine homeopathy. The basic concept Reiki is becoming increasingly popular. It is behind homeopathy is that water possesses a based on the concept of a spiritual life force, or memory, and in extremely diluted states a energy force, flowing through all things, called substance that in pure form may be harmful, ‘chi’ (ki or qi). Hamaor / September 2012 Page 37 Journey to Morocco & Gibraltar by Rabbi Garson This past May, Tzvi Sperber, executive director of JRoots & I led a second JRoots Jewish Journey to Morocco. Forty people, who participated in the trip, experienced living JRoot's mantra of "connecting generations" and experienced a Journey to retrace the roots of the Sefardic world. Raphy Elmaleh, the only Jewish Guide in Morocco, rejoined us. Once again in Marrakech we met with the President of Moroccan Jewry Jaqui Kadoch who shared his memories and vision for the future of Moroccan Jewry. Our first visit was to the Atlas Mountains. We headed to the kever of R’ Shlomo Ben Lhans – the story of this Casablanca - Photography by Alan Fish Living World Tzaddik appeared in the last edition of Hamaor. The route passed some of the many original houses of the Berber Jews, whose communities are established in the Atlas We visited many of the places and shuls from the first trip, mountains. It was in these homes that Raphy Elmaleh including the only Jewish museum in Islamic world. The question was asked many other names, less well known, needed to be “Why did these Jews not do up their houses?”, “A lick of discussed and I shared their legacies in the places where paint, some carpet?”. The answer, written in many books they lived. Our group became familiar with R’ Shmuel and told over by older surviving Berber Jews, is unanimous Elbaz; R’ Yaakov Abuchazera, also known as the Abir – “What is the point? The Talmud has a debate regarding the identification of Rabbi Yehuda's “Yam Hagadol”, over which blessing must be made. The most obvious candidate for Rabbi Yehuda's blessing is the Mediterranean Sea, for the Bible refers to this body of water as Yam Hagadol. The Almighty told this to Moses when defining the borders of Israel (Bamidbar 34). Some commentators argue that the Mediterranean Sea barely justified the appellation Yam Hagadol; indeed it is a significant sea when looking at it from Eretz Yisrael, however it hardly stands out in relation to other bodies of water around the world. It is unlikely that Rabbi Yehuda would suggest a special blessing for a body of water that only has local significance. Yam Hagadol must therefore be referring to the ocean (Rosh, The Group in Rabat - Photography by Alan Fish Living World 13th-14th centuries, Germany-Spain). A third opinion Third Jewish Journey to Morocco Either sought a middle ground: The Yam Hagadol refers to the 4th – 7th February 2013 or 26th – 29th May 2013 vast body of water that encircles planet earth.
