Smith ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities of Northeastern University April 2018 2 ABSTRACT This dissertation presents the study of a novel approach to rhetorical genre studies (RGS) pedagogy through a framework I call explicit collaborative modeling, which asks students to use networked, digital writing practices—schema building and text encoding with eXtensible Markup Language (XML)—to study, represent, critique, and produce a range of writing genres. The project rests at the intersection of three conversations: rhetorical genre studies, digital writing, and the digital humanities. At this intersection, this study asks: What can this novel form of digital writing reveal about how students make and make sense of genre knowledge? What can we learn about genre by interfacing with it through XML? What can we learn about this writing technology by using it to represent genres? The dissertation seeks to answer these questions by drawing on qualitative data gathered from students’ individual and collaborative writing, interviews, and reflective teaching journals to examine how students used XML to literally mark and remark upon their writing as they worked to make and remake their understandings of genres in the classroom. Doing so, this project intervenes variously to the three fields identified above. It advances explicit collaborative modeling, a novel RGS pedagogy, that serves as a way to explore the effectiveness of RGS pedagogies writ large. The study offers collaborative and individual case studies of students and examines the affordances and limitations of explicit collaborative modeling as a tool for developing genre knowledge and facility and for making visible key tensions in genre work. Though this approach uses XML and schema building, this model is not meant to be prescriptive, but rather serve as an example that indicates one way RGS teachers might put students’ conceptual understandings of genres in conversation with one another. By advancing this pedagogy, the study extracts pedagogical insights for RGS teachers and teachers of writing more 3 broadly. The principle contribution in this regard is the pedagogical concept of procedural design, an approach to teaching that recognizes the rhetorical role of procedures as they are enacted in the writing classroom and seeks spaces to invite students to intervene in them. The project provides situated, process-oriented views of how students—individual and collaborative—negotiate their understandings of genres through the writing technologies of XML encoding and schema building. Doing so, the project adds to the literature in writing studies and digital humanities on the ways in which technologies (whether acknowledged or unacknowledged and digital or analog) mediate rhetorical possibilities for students, and how students work to negotiate their individual and collaborative writerly positions and identities within the mediated spaces of writing classrooms. This study is held together by an approach to teacher research that is supplemented with rhetorical theories of usability and participatory design. I argue that these supplements to teacher research can enable researchers to better examine the technologies introduced into their classrooms and to leverage them to facilitate the goals and ethics of teacher research. As digital tools and environments become increasingly ubiquitous, as screens and interfaces become increasingly invisible, it is crucial for writing studies scholars to spur awareness and critique of these systems if we are to effectively prepare students to participate in and shape new environments for communication. 4 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I want to begin by thanking my committee. Lawrence This dissertation collects three articles that emerged from my work as a teacher and a researcher. In Chapter One, I share curricular resources that I designed as a teacher of research literacies to encourage qualitative research writers in (English) education to engage creatively and critically with the aesthetics of their research-writing processes and to narrate their experiences in dialogues with others. Specifically, I present three heuristics for writing and revising qualitative research articles in (English) education: “PAGE” (Purpose, Audience, Genre, Engagement), “Problem Posing, Problem Addressing, Problem Posing,” and “The Three INs” (INtroduction, INsertion, INterpretation). In explaining these heuristics, I describe the rhetorical functions and conventional structure of all of the major sections of qualitative research articles, and show how the problem for study brings the rhetorical “jobs” of each section into purposive relationship with those of the other sections. Together, the three curricular resources that I offer in this chapter prompt writers to connect general rhetorical concerns with specific writing moves and to approach qualitative research writing as a strategic art. Chapters Two and Three emerged from research inspired by my teaching, during which writers shared with me personal literacy narratives, or autobiographical accounts related to their experiences with academic research writing.

Further, there is a growing subset of YAL wherein authors provide a modernized take on literary classics, allowing narratives that have been staples in ELA curricula for decades to become more relatable to their contemporaryadolescent audiences.

    Chapter 3 Genre theories and the present study 3.1. Introduction The previous chapter reviewed contrastive rhetoric as a field of study and the new orientations of contrastive rhetorical studies that have emerged from the criticisms on traditional contrastive rhetoric and new developments of discourse analysis and composition research. In addition, it reviewed contrastive studies between Chinese and English writing, especially with regard to expository writing, and relevant contrastive studies on media discourses. This chapter moves towards a theoretical review of the previous genre studies and discourse studies relevant to this project. The chapter reviews different traditions of genre theories with the aim of establishing a theoretical framework for the present study. These theories mainly cover new rhetoric, systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) perspectives on genre. These perspectives are considered as complementary rather than contradictory in terms of analytical applications in this study. 3.2. The genre-based view of discourse Genre has been defined in different ways in the field of applied linguistics. The most influential definitions are from three different traditions of genre studies. The first definition is from the tradition of new rhetoric genre studies. Miller (1984/1994) argues for genre as rhetorical action based on recurrent situations and for an open principle of genre classification based on rhetorical practice, rather than a closed one based solely on structure, substance, or aim. Genre studies in the new rhetoric focus less on features of the text and more on relations between text and context often by employing ethnographic research or case study methods.

Finally, I would like to thank the graduate faculty for challenging while also supporting me throughout this program. iii ABSTRACT While Writing Studies scholars such as Angela Rounsaville and Elizabeth Wardle consider the applications of genre and transfer in first-year composition (FYC), few scholars are considering how to apply these topics in middle and high school ELA classrooms. Instead of relying on the prescribed state standards to guide the teaching of writing at the secondary level, this project proposes a pedagogy based on Rhetorical Genre Studies, an approach to genre that finds its genesis with Carolyn Miller and David Russell and has since been extended to questions of transfer by Rounsaville and Wardle.
