AP US History Summer Reading List Welcome to Your First College Level American History Class AP US History Summer Reading List Welcome to your first college level American History class. I have prepared a list of books for you this summer. I do not expect you to read all of these books (although one day you will). I expect you to select at least 3-4 of these books and have them read during this summer. Some of these are required reading though, among them you need to read Battle Cry before we begin the Civil War unit around Thanksgiving (it is a long book so you’ll need to start soon). The Affluent Society before Spring Break and All the President’s Men by April 15th. The books are organized roughly by topic unit but this is not set in stone. You may be interested in reading some other books than the ones on the list and that is okay just email me and let me know so I can let you know if it will be discussed during the year. There will be no quizzes or tests on the day school starts or any of that stuff.     For students of HI 2106 – Themes in modern American history and HI 2018 – American History: A survey READING LISTS General Reading: 1607-1991 Single or two-volume overviews of American history are big business in the American academic world. They are generally reliable, careful and bland. An exception is Bernard Bailyn et al, The Great Republic: a history of the American people which brings together thoughtful and provocative essays from some of America’s top historians, for example David Herbert Donald and Gordon Wood. This two-volume set is recommended for purchase (and it will shortly be available in the library). Other useful works are George Tindall, America: a Narrative History, Eric Foner, Give me Liberty and P.S. Boyer et al, The Enduring Vision all of which are comprehensive, accessible up to date and contain very valuable bibliographies. Among the more acceptable shorter alternatives are M.A. Jones, The Limits of Liberty and Carl Degler, Out of our Past. Hugh Brogan, The Penguin history of the United States is entertaining and mildly idiosyncratic. A recent highly provocative single- volume interpretative essay on American history which places war at the centre of the nation’s development is Fred Anderson and Andrew Cayton, The Dominion of War: Empire and Liberty in North America, 1500-2000 All of the above are available in paperback and one should be purchased. Anthologies of major articles or extracts from important books are also a big commercial enterprise in U.S. publishing. By far the most useful and up-to-date is the series Major problems in American History published by D.C.

    The Japanese Journal of American Studies, No. 18 (2007) Transnationalism and American Studies in Place Karen HALTTUNEN* When George Lipsitz proclaimed, in 2001, that the field of American studies was “in a moment of danger,” he demonstrated once again the cultural power of the jeremiad that has shaped this academic enterprise since its emergence in the first half of the twentieth century.1 To a sig- nificant degree, the intellectual vigor of American studies arises from its never-ending habit of self-reflection and critique. Since the 1960s, three successive and inter-related crises have challenged American studies practitioners to rethink our most fundamental assumptions about our area of scholarship. The first directly challenged the consensus-oriented myth-and-symbol school that achieved its apex in the 1950s, by turning attention from a homogeneous “American mind” to a rich proliferation of “minority” histories, literatures, and cultures, exploring the seemingly infinite variety of identities shaped by social class, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, and, most recently, physical ability. The second responded to Benedict Anderson’s concept of the nation as “imagined community” by exploring the fictive qualities of American bourgeois nationalism, with special attention to American exceptionalism, and to the ways in which “American national identity has been produced pre- cisely in opposition to, and therefore in relationship with, that which it Copyright © 2007 Karen Halttunen.
