Notice of Race Convoy Cup Mini-Offshore Race September 12, 2020

1. Organizing Authority: These races are hosted by the of Dartmouth, .

2. Objectives: The Convoy Cup Ocean Race offers racing and cruising yachts an opportunity to participate in an ocean race to commemorate the links that formed between the province of Nova Scotia and the countries of Europe during the two world wars. Halifax was the congregation point for hundreds of naval vessels and supply ships that formed convoys to transport the necessities of life across the ; this race is dedicated to the memory of all those men and women in the navy and merchant marine service who sailed in those convoys.

3. Rules: Racing will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020 (RRS), the prescriptions of the Canadian Yachting Association and this Notice of Race except as modified by the Sailing Instructions. Dartmouth Yacht Club Race Committee (RC) will have final authority on all matters.

4. Description: Normally the Convoy Cup is an overnight 100 n/m ocean race and a Basin Race is also held. This season is quite different due to the COVID 19 pandemic so the event this year has been changed to a mini-offshore race. The Convoy Cup Mini-Offshore Race will be comprised of 1 race of approximately 30 n/m (course and distances may be adjusted according to forecast winds and conditions). 5. Start date, course and finish: The races will commence September 12, 2020 at 1200 at a start line established between the Navy Island buoy HY2 (Mark 11on the DYC course card) and the RC flag on the Race Committee boat passing either side of George’s Island outbound only, and proceeding to HB, port rounding and return keeping George’s Island to starboard, to finish at the CSS dock, at in a line projected from the edge of the wharf, which is closest to the Last Steps Memorial. (The HMCS Sackville has been moved from it’s normal slip) This will be an approximately 30 Nm race, (a GPS self timed finish, reporting time by e-mail. Finishes may also be recorded by the race committee). The number of starts and start times will be determined once entries are confirmed.

6. Eligibility: The owners of all boats entered in event must be current members of their national governing body, i.e.: local sailors must be a member of the Canadian Yachting Association. Your CYA card or similar proof of membership may be requested. Yachts must have a valid Nova Scotia Yachting Association PHRF rating. Yachts without a NSYA rating may be assigned one by the Race Committee. 6.1 Eligibility for the Convoy Cup Mini-Offshore Ocean Race: Any sailing yacht which is a member of the NSYA with an overall length of 25 feet (7.5 meters) or greater that complies with Canadian Coast Guard Small Vessel Regulations will be eligible. Every yacht entering the race must have a crew of at least 2 persons and must always have a watch-keeper on deck.

7. Fleet Classes: Classes may consist of A spinnaker, B spinnaker, C non-spinnaker. Classes must consist of a minimum of four boats. A, B and C classes may be combined or split depending upon the level of participation. The ratings used will be the PHRF NS ratings assigned to each yacht by the NSYA. If a yacht does not have a NSYA rating one will be assigned by the RC for that race only.

8. Registration: Register by completing both the DYC Regatta Registration form and the Covid Compliance Agreement, and e-mailing them to the DYC Fleet Captain Sail, J C Gouthro at [email protected]. Your registration will be confirmed by return e-mail. Note: DYC sailors who have previously completed the Covid Compliance Agreement do not need to re-submit that document. Close of registration is 17:00 on Friday September 11th. If course adjustments are required due to weather conditions, they will be communicated on VHF 68 prior to the first warning signal.

9. Entry Fees: There are no entry fees for this event.

10. Schedule: The race will commence on Saturday, September 12th. Registration will be done by email and the deadline for registration is 17:00 hrs., Friday September 11th 2020.

11. Equipment for the mini-offshore race: All Yachts must be equipped in compliance with the Transport Small Vessel Regulations.

12. The Prize, shared with all participants, is the opportunity to sail a small part of the historic route taken by Allied Convoys from to the approaches of , and return to a finish line at the stern of K181, a historically significant contributor to the convoy's success. We will award 2020 Convoy Cup plaques for the first place finishers for all classes and those names will be on the Convoy Cup.
