Biographical/Historical Note
The Georgia Gazette (using the name of a eighteenth century Georgia paper was a weekly newspaper with a mission to provide Savannah with a more analytical editorial writing on state and local issues. The newspaper ran from 10 April 1978 until 28 February 1985. Albert Scardino received the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for editorials he had written on Georgia and Chatham County politics. Before starting the Georgia Gazette with his wife Marjorie Morris Scardino, Albert Scardino served as reporter and editor for the Associated Press, Baltimore Evening Sun, Atlanta Constitution and The Morning News in Savannah.
Albert Scardino grew up in Savannah, Georgia, and graduated from Savannah Country Day School. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts at Columbia University in New York, earned his Master of Arts in journalism at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1974 he married Marjorie Morris. Marjorie Morris Scardino was raised in Texas and received her Bachelor of Arts from Baylor University. She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of San Francisco. The couple moved to Savannah in 1978 and Marjorie Scardino joined the firm of Brannen, Wessels, and Searcy. The Scardinos, parents of one daughter and two sons, now live in England. Albert Scardino became the executive news editor with the newspaper The Guardian and Marjorie is the CEO of Pearson, an international media conglomerate.
The Georgia Gazette stopped publication because of financial difficulties after Chatham County officials withdrew the legal advertising that had provided 60 percent of the Gazette's revenues.
