Celebrate Labor Day -- “Pullman: Women and Work” Chicago – Join us in Pullman National Monument from 1:00 – 4:30 pm on Monday, September 2, 2019 to celebrate Labor Day. This free outdoor event on the grounds of the historic Hotel Florence at Pullman State Historic Site (11111 S. Forrestville) and the shared Visitor Information Center (11141 S. Cottage Grove) celebrates the contributions workers have made to the strength and prosperity of America.

After a brief opening ceremony at 1:00 honoring three women champions of preservation and labor education in Pullman, folk musicians Bucky Halker and Don Stiernberg take the stage at 1:15. Time travelers “Jennie Curtis” and “Chicago Mayor Hopkins” recreate the first waltz from an 1894 awareness dance at 2:00, before DJ Ruta spins current dance tunes. Paul’s Broken Radio rock band takes the stage from 3:15 until close.

Kids of all ages can ride Canadian National Railway’s “Little Obie,” while Operation Lifesaver volunteers promote rail-crossing safety. Improve your history IQ with a walking tour at 2:15 (Women of Pullman) or 3:15 (1894 Pullman Strike 125th Anniversary). Each tour limited to the first 50 to sign up at the event.

Enjoy the event exhibits at the participant tents, hotel veranda and Visitor Information Center. Learn things you never knew about the Calumet region from the people who know it best at the new “Calumet Voices/National Stories” traveling exhibit – limited run through November.
