Forrestville Avenue PCO Slate of Nominees 2018-2019 Pullman Partners: Realizing the Vision Debbie Newman Pat Brannon On behalf of the PCO Nominating Committee, I am pleased to report the Early in 2012 a small group of people started meeting to think about what current slate for 2018-2019. Per our Bylaws, there being no additional it would take for Pullman to become a National Park. As more neighbors nominations from the floor by the end of the April PCO General Member- heard about this, the small group grew, including nearly all the non-profits ship meeting, a motion will be made at the May PCO General Member- and institutions throughout Pullman and Roseland, including the Pullman ship Meeting to accept the following slate: Civic Organization, the Historic Pullman Foundation, Pullman Wheel- works Residents, the Pullman Porter Museum, the Roseland Chamber of Officers (1 year term): Commerce, and the Illinois Labor History Society, to name a few. By the President: Wyatt Ollestad time the Pullman National Monument was established in 2015, this small, Vice President: Rachel Smith-Kovarsky dedicated group of volunteers had grown, with support numbering well Secretary: Ellen Kaulig into the tens of thousands. Treasurer: Jim Bosman Even before the national monument was designated, Positioning Pullman Zone Directors (2 year term): brought together more than 40 volunteer architects, planners, and historic Zone 1: Tom McMahon preservationists, as well as Pullman neighbors and constituents for a major Zone 2: Debbie Newman brainstorming session about how we could best leverage the momentum Zone 3: Cheryl Briscoe that a national monument could bring. -

Conceived by America’s labor unions as a testament to their cause, the legislation sanctioning the holiday was shepherded through Congress amid labor unrest and signed by President Grover Cleveland as a reluctant election-year compromise. Pullman, Illinois, was a company town, founded in 1880 by George Pullman, president of the railroad sleeping car company. Pullman designed and built the town to stand as a utopian workers’ community insulated from the moral (and political) seductions of nearby Chicago. The town was srictly, almost feudally, organized: row houses for the assembly and craft workers; modest Victorians for the managers; and a luxurious hotel where Pullman himself lived and where visiting customers, suppliers, and salesman would lodge while in town. Its residents all worked for the Pullman Company, their paychecks drawn from Pullman bank, and their rent, set by Pullman, deducted automatically from their weekly paychecks. The town, and the company, operated smoothly and successfully for more than a decade. But in 1893, the Pullman Company was caught in the nationwide economic depression. Orders for railroad sleeping cars declined, and George Pullman was forced to lay off hundreds of employees. Those who remained endured wage cuts, even while rents in Pullman remained consistent. Take-home paychecks plummeted. And so the employees walked out, demanding lower rents and higher pay. The American Railway Union, led by a young Eugene V. Debs, came to the cause of the striking workers, and railroad workers across the nation boycotted trains carrying Pullman cars. Rioting, pillaging, and burning of railroad cars soon ensued; mobs of non-union workers joined in. -

Podvia —Carl Sandburg, Chicago The City of Chicago has had its more than its share of murder, mayhem and disaster. All of these happenings attracted national attention; a few resulted in regulations that have improved health and safety. This is a listing of some of the most well-known Chicago tragedies. You might want to visit some or all of these places during your time in Chicago. Several of these are located within walking distance of the AALL Annual Meeting. Some others can be reached via public transportation. Be aware that not all of these locations are open to the public. Federal Regulations Gone Awry: The Sinking of the SS Eastland Chicago Riverwalk between LaSalle and Clark Streets The SS Eastland, a popular Chicago-based excursion boat, was launched in 1902. Known for its speed, the vessel had a design flaw that made it top-heavy. The problem was worsened following the passage of the Federal Seamen's Act in 1915. The act, adopted is response to the RMS Titanic disaster, required the retrofitting of a complete set of lifeboats on the Eastland. The additional weight made the unstable ship even more dangerous. -

Creating an Illinois Geography Lapbook can help you to further explore the wonderful state of Illinois. Basic instructions on creating a lapbook are available at the bottom of this page along with templates and images for use in your lapbook. Geography is more than just the physical make up of a location, it is also about the people, their interaction with the environment and nature. I hope to have touched on each of these in some way in this lapbook study. How to Use This Page You will find many facts and interesting items on this page and on the Illinois Geography page. There is too much information to include in a beginning lapbook session. Take a few minutes to first pick what you feel is important for your student to know or what might be interesting to him or her. I recommend no more than one or two items from each category per lapbooking session. The option to expand on this topic is always there but cover what you believe is important first. THEN Do activities that relate to the topic, for example the State dance is a Square Dance. Look up online the basic Square Dance steps and try them or take a Square Dancing class. Follow up by putting a dance diagram in the lapbook. Be creative in trying new things and experiment with more than the templates. If your child is artistic, let her/him draw. If your child learns by hands-on activities make an invention. Is your child musically inclined, sing the state song. -

Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum to host a ceremony celebrating the contributions of the legendary Pullman Porters and African-American railroad workers at the Oakland Amtrak Station on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 11 am. Amtrak officials and local dignitaries will gather to honor five porters and dining car waiters who proudly served as far back as the mid-1940s. Honored are Lee Gibson, 98, of Los Angeles, James Smith, 83, of Simi Valley, Samuel Coleman, 80, of Las Vegas, and Troy Walker, 90, and Thomas Gray, 71, of Seattle (biographical information below). "The celebration is an opportunity for Amtrak's current employees to express their gratitude and recognize the dedication and service of their forebears, the Pullman Porters," said Joseph H. Boardman, Amtrak's President and CEO. "The service of the Pullman Porters often goes under- reported as a part of American history. We celebrate their courageous journey, victorious struggle for equality and contributions to passenger rail travel." The event will begin at 11 am in the Amtrak Station at Jack London Square, 245 2nd St, Oakland, preceded that morning by a private reception with Amtrak employees. Goldberg who was United States Secretary of Labor and Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court and Ambassador to the United Nations among many other things. During our Centennial Celebration, the John Marshall Law School chose to celebrate the life of Arthur Goldberg who served on the Law School's faculty in the 1930s, the 1940s and the 1950s.
