With her trademark blend of humor and melancholy, Berlin crafts miracles from the everyday—uncovering moments of grace in the cafeterias and Laundromats of the American Southwest, in the homes of the Northern California upperclass from the perspective of a cleaning woman, alone in a hotel dining room in Mexico City. The women of Berlin's stories are lost, but they are also strong, clever, and extraordinarily real. They are hitchhikers, hard workers, bad Christians. They navigate a world of jockeys, doctors, and switchboard operators with the wit of Lorrie Moore and the grit of Raymond Carver. They laugh, they mourn, they drink. Berlin, a highly influential writer despite publishing little in her lifetime, conjures these women across California, Mexico, and beyond. Lovers of the short story will not want to miss this remarkable collection from a master of the form. Lucia Berlin was born in 1936. Her earliest work was published when she was twenty-four, in The Atlantic Monthly and in Saul Bellow and Keith Botsford's journal The Noble Savage. -

FARRAR, STRAUS AND GIROUX Reading Group Gold A Manual for Cleaning Women Selected Stories by Lucia Berlin ISBN: 978-0-374-20239-2 / 432 pages A Manual for Cleaning Women compiles the best work of the legendary short-story writer Lucia Berlin. With the grit of Raymond Carver, the humor of Grace Paley, and a blend of wit and melan- choly all her own, Berlin crafts miracles from the everyday, uncovering moments of grace in the Laundromats and halfway houses of the American Southwest, in the homes of the Bay Area upper class, among switchboard operators and struggling mothers, hitchhikers and bad Christians. We hope you revel in this remarkable collection from a master of the form. The following discussion topics should enrich your reading group’s experience. QUESTIONS AND TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION 1. “Mama” is one of several stories portraying a mother who is seldom nurturing, often vicious, fre- quently drunk. The relationship is complex. Is Sally, one of her daughters, bitter? How does Sally feel about this mother? How do you feel about her? 2. “Tiger Bites” is about crossing the border for an abortion during the 1950s, when abortion was generally not available in the United States. What is the author’s attitude toward the narrator? Does the author present a stance on a society that offers no other way? Why does the narrator decide against the abortion? American Book Awards 2004
BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE AMERICAN BOOK AWARDS 2004 America was intended to be a place where freedom from discrimination was the means by which equality was achieved. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -
