  • Fiera Internazionale Del Libro Di Torino

  • J.M. Reibetanz Four Quartets As Poetry of Place One Thinks of Four
J.M. Reibetanz Four Quartets as Poetry of Place One thinks of Four Quartets preeminently as a religious and philosophical poem; yet its argument does not proceed simply or preeminently on an abstract level. Rather, ideas enter our consciousness and our understanding through felt experience. Whether it be the paradox of the still point, the mystical negative way of illumination, the attitude of humility, the nature of time, the relationship of attachement, detachment, indifference and history, the necessity for atonement, or any of the other difficult ideas Eliot argues, the poetry leads us into a full experience of concepts by grounding them in places. Thus, we know the still point primarily through our vision in the rose-garden of Burnt Norton; the negative way of ilJumination is presented spatially as a descent into the darkness beneath the level of the London underground; the attitude of humility is derived out of the atmosphere of death that pervades East Coker; the nature of time is seen through our experience of the river and the sea; the thorny relationship of attachment, detachment, indifference and history is argued through the paradigm of the nettles on the hedgerow of Little Gidding; and the necessity for atonement arises from our experience of the tongues of fire that descend on wartime London. Even the primary religious concept of the Quartets. the Incarnation, is not fully argued in conceptual terms until three quarters of the way through the poem, at the end of The Dry Salvages. Long before that, however, its mystery is revealed to us in particular moments of illumination that transpire in time and also in place.

Drawing on the Margins of History: English-Language Graphic Narratives in Canada by Kevin Ziegler A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2013 © Kevin Ziegler 2013 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This study analyzes the techniques that Canadian comics life writers develop to construct personal histories. I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411).

George Michael was Britain’s biggest pop star of the 1980s, first with the duo Wham! and then as a solo artist. The Three Crowns played a small but significant part in his story. After Wham! made their initial chart breakthrough with the single Young Guns (Go for It) in 1982, George’s songwriting gift brought them giant hits including Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Freedom, and they became leading lights of the 80s boom in British pop music, alongside Duran Duran, Culture Club and Spandau Ballet, even exporting it behind the Iron Curtain. His first solo album Faith, released in 1987, sold 25 million copies, and George sold more than 100 million albums worldwide with Wham! and under his own name. George was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in Finchley, north London. His father, Kyriacos Panayiotou, was a Greek Cypriot restaurateur, and his mother an English dancer, Lesley Angold. In the late 1960s the family moved to Edgware, where George attended Kingsbury School, before they moved to the affluent Hertfordshire town of Radlett in the mid-1970s. • The Mid-Twentieth-Century American Poetic Speaker in the Works of Robert Lowell, Frank O’Hara, and George Oppen
“THE OCCASION OF THESE RUSES”: THE MID-TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN POETIC SPEAKER IN THE WORKS OF ROBERT LOWELL, FRANK O’HARA, AND GEORGE OPPEN A dissertation submitted by Matthew C. Nelson In partial fulfillment for the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In English TUFTS UNIVERSITY May 2016 ADVISER: VIRGINIA JACKSON Abstract This dissertation argues for a new history of mid-twentieth-century American poetry shaped by the emergence of the figure of the poetic speaker as a default mode of reading. Now a central fiction of lyric reading, the figure of the poetic speaker developed gradually and unevenly over the course of the twentieth century. While the field of historical poetics draws attention to alternative, non-lyric modes of address, this dissertation examines how three poets writing in this period adapted the normative fiction of the poetic speaker in order to explore new modes of address. By choosing three mid-century poets who are rarely studied beside one another, this dissertation resists the aesthetic factionalism that structures most historical models of this period. My first chapter, “Robert Lowell’s Crisis of Reading: The Confessional Subject as the Culmination of the Romantic Tradition of Poetry,” examines the origins of M.L. Rosenthal’s phrase “confessional poetry” and analyzes how that the autobiographical effect of Robert Lowell’s poetry emerges from a strange, collage-like construction of multiple texts and non- autobiographical subjects. My second chapter reads Frank O’Hara’s poetry as a form of intentionally averted communication that treats the act of writing as a surrogate for the poet’s true object of desire.

I was neither at the hot gates Nor fought in the warm rain Nor knee deep in the salt marsh, heaving a cutlass, Bitten by flies, fought. —Eliot, “Gerontion” Eliot’s “Gerontion” begins with a simple request, one that is implicit in all forms of life writing, that asks us to recognize the present being of the speak- ing I. “Here I am” (Eliot, “Gerontion” 31). But as the line shifts immediate- ly to conjure up its “old man in a dry month” (“Gerontion” 31), the poem does everything it can, particularly through layers of irony and allusion, to mitigate against, or at least greatly complicate, the autobiographical mode invited in those opening three syllables. Eliot’s consistent advice to readers of this famously difficult poem was that they should follow form not con- tent. He pointed Mary Hutchinson, probably the poem’s first reader, to its allusive nature when he boasted on July 9, 1919, that “I can show you in the thing I enclose how I have borrowed from half a dozen sources just as boldly as Shakespeare” (Eliot, Letters 372).
