Draper (Professor of Chemistry, 1836-1839) while at Hampden-Sydney. Created from in-depth scientific and cooperative research, the camera is on display in the front gallery of the Museum. By using the camera and a departmental telescope, Draper wrote he took the first astronomical photographs. After leaving Hampden-Sydney College to become a professor at New York University Medical College, Draper was able to take the world’s first true portrait of a living person on September 23, 1839. the sAber oF lAtAné Also on display are the officer’s saber and scabbard belonging to Captain William Latané, Class of 1853 (in Hampden-Sydney’s Medical Department).
