Owing to the actor's accidental death, the Master never had a proper send-off and would not return as a semi- regular character until 1981.     “Outlaw Pete”: Bruce Springsteen and the Dream-Work of Cosmic American Music Peter J. Fields Midwestern State University Abstract During the 2006 Seeger Sessions tour, Springsteen shared his deep identification with the internal struggle implied by old spirituals like “Jacob’s Ladder.” While the Magic album seemed to veer wide of the Seeger Sessions ethos, Working on a Dream re-engages mythically with what Greil Marcus would call “old, weird America” and Gram Parsons deemed “cosmic American music.” Working suggests the universe operates according to “cosmic” principles of justice, judgment, and salvation, but is best understood from the standpoint of what Freud would call “dream work” and “dream thoughts.” As unfolded in Frank Caruso’s illustrations for the picturebook alter ego of Working‘s “Outlaw Pete,” these dynamics may allude to Springsteen’s conflicted relationship with his father. The occasion of the publication in December 2014 of a picturebook version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Outlaw Pete,” the first and longest song on the album Working on a Dream (2009), offers Springsteen scholars and fans alike a good reason to revisit material that, as biographer Peter Ames Carlin remarks, failed in the spring American tour of that year to “light up the arenas.”1 When the Working on a Dream tour opened in April 2009 in San Jose, at least Copyright © Peter Fields, 2016.     Tony Keen ‘Invasion narratives in British television Science Fiction’ ‘Went the Day of the Daleks well?’ An investigation into the role of invasion narratives in shaping 1950s and 1960s British television Science Fiction, as shown in Quater- mass, Doctor Who and UFO If the function of art is to hold a mirror up to society, then science fiction (sf), through the distorted reflection it offers, allows the examination of aspects of society that might otherwise be too uncomfortable to confront. This essay aims to look at how invasion narratives, stories concerned with the invasion of Britain from outside, shaped three British science fiction series, and how those series interro- gated the narratives. The series will primarily be examined through aesthetic and social ap- proaches. Particular areas to be explored include the embracing and subverting of common assumptions about Britain’s attitude to invasion, and the differing attitudes to the military displayed. Introduction As an island nation, the prospect of invasion has always occupied a prominent place in the British popular imagination. According to Sellar and Yeatman, the two memorable dates in history are 55 BC and 1066, the dates of the invasions of Julius Caesar and William the Con- queror.1 Subsequent events such as the Spanish Armada of 1588 are also well-known mo- ments in history. It is inevitable that the prospect of invasion should produce speculative literature. Some works appeared around the time of Napoleon’s threatened invasion of 1803,2 but ‘invasion literature’ as a literary genre emerged out of the growing market for novels and short-story magazines, and is generally considered to have begun with the appearance of George Tomp- kyns Chesney’s 1871 story ‘The Battle of Dorking’,3 a story of the German conquest of Eng- land, prompted by the German victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871.

MAPPING LOS ANGELES: SPATIAL REPRESENTATIONS OF THE MARGIN IN FICTION by ANNA BARATTIN Under the Direction of Audrey Goodman, PhD ABSTRACT The geocentric study of literature has often been fixed with canonical western texts. New approaches to spatial literary interpretations, however, invite the incorporation of marginality in the study of fiction, suggesting that the margin is a necessary component of the whole, thus challenging physical and metaphorical notions of centrality. Mapping Los Angeles: Spatial Representations of the Margin in Fiction examines four Los Angeles novels that in different ways establish the social significance of concepts such as place, location, landscape, architecture, environment, home, city, region, territory, and geography. This dissertation argues that a localized understanding of the urban literary model can serve a larger frame of reference for a global interpretation of the non-conformative text. Organized chronologically, Mapping Los Angeles combines the study of geography with historical perspectives. Starting in the modernist period, my project defines some of the crucial elements in reference to the multiethnic urban dimension, such as city structure and space organization in John Fante’s Ask the Dust.
