J. ABSTRACT Designing for pedestrians is a research work carried out as a result of the inadequate availability of pedestrian facilities resulting to increased accidents and other environmental and human hazards resulting from intermodal competitions for spaces vis-à-vis Highway capacity. This has helped to consider the possibility of pedestrian facilities for transportation in Taiwo road. The presence of pedestrian in Taiwo road has been investigated and found to be 538 per hour. In this research, Pedestrian facilities were designed for the Ibrahim Taiwo road in Ilorin city which is 3900m distance (from Taiwo salee junction to the end of the road at General Hospital roundabout). The design was done by carrying out pedestrian count on the Sidewalk and Crosswalk for the road in two hours for three days. The Sidewalk designed is 2.0m while the distance between the crosswalk markings is 0.6m and the thickness of the zebra crossing line is 0.6mat 3800m, 3200m 2150m, 650m and 200m from the origin of the road with 3m width, the Island height is 0.15m, the height of the signs above the ground is 2.0m and the Bus shelters are located at 3800m and 650m from the origin.

  • Historical Dynamics of Ọjị Ezinihitte Cultural Festival in Igboland, Nigeria
67 International Journal of Modern Anthropology Int. J. Mod. Anthrop. 2020. Vol. 2, Issue 13, pp: 67 - 98 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/ijma.v2i13.2 Available online at: www.ata.org.tn & https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijma Research Article Historical dynamics of Ọjị Ezinihitte cultural festival in Igboland, Nigeria Akachi Odoemene Department of History and International Studies, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Nigeria E-mail: [email protected] (Received 6 January 2020; Accepted 16 May 2020; Published 6 June 2020) Abstract - Ọjị (kola nut) is indispensable in traditional life of the Igbo of Nigeria. It plays an intrinsic role in almost all segments of the people‟s cultural life. In the Ọjị Ezinihitte festivity the „kola tradition‟ is meaningfully and elaborately celebrated. This article examines the importance of Ọjị within the context of Ezinihitte socio-cultural heritage, and equally accounts for continuity and change within it. An eclectic framework in data collection was utilized for this research. This involved the use of key-informant interviews, direct observation as well as extant textual sources (both published and un-published), including archival documents, for the purposes of the study. In terms of analysis, the study utilized the qualitative analytical approach. This was employed towards ensuring that the three basic purposes of this study – exploration, description and explanation – are well articulated and attained. The paper provided background for a proper understanding of the „sacred origin‟ of the Ọjị festive celebration. Through a vivid account of the festival‟s processes and rituals, it achieved a reconstruction of the festivity‟s origins and evolutionary trajectories and argues the festival as reflecting the people‟s spirit of fraternity and conviviality.

  • List of Community Banks Converted to Microfinance Banks As at 31St
CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA IMPORTANT NOTICE LIST OF COMMUNITY BANKS THAT HAVE SUCESSFULLY CONVERTED TO MICROFINANCE BANKS AS AT DECEMBER 31, 2007 Following the expiration of December 31, 2007 deadline for all existing community banks to re-capitalize to a minimum of N20 million shareholders’ fund, unimpaired by losses, and consequently convert to microfinance banks (MFB), it is imperative to publish the outcome of the conversion exercise for the guidance of the general public. Accordingly, the attached list represents 607 erstwhile community banks that have successfully converted to microfinance banks with either final licence or provisional approval. This list does not, however, include new investors that have been granted Final Licences or Approvals-In- Principle to operate as microfinance banks since the launch of Microfinance Policy on December 15, 2005. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) hereby states categorically that only the community banks on this list that have successfully converted to microfinance banks shall continue to be supervised by the CBN. Members of the public are hereby advised not to transact business with any community bank which is not on the list of these successfully converted microfinance banks. Any member of the public, who transacts business with any community bank that failed to convert to MFB does so at his/her own risk. Members of the public are also to note that the operating licences of community banks that failed to re-capitalize and consequently do not appear on this list, have automatically been revoked pursuant to Section 12 of BOFIA, 1991 (as amended). For the avoidance of the doubt, new applications either as a Unit or State Microfinance Banks from potential investors or promoters shall continue to be received and processed for licensing by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

  • Cultural Festival in Ezinihitte Mbaise, Imo State
Kola Nut (Oji) Cultural Festival in Ezinihitte Mbaise, Imo State N.C. Ihediwa, V. Nwashindu, and C.M. Onah Department of History and International Studies University of Nigeria, Nsukka Abstract The common saying in Igboland is that every other culture group in Nigeria eats kola nuts, but it is only in Igboland that kola nut oji is not only eaten, but also celebrated. This position is true of the Igbo who do not cultivate kola nuts in abundance as a commercial venture like the Yoruba, but have deep reverence for the fruits because of its significance in the Igbo worldview. The Igbo do not eat this fruit like other groups in Nigeria, who essentially eat it for its sedative qualities as well as a hunger therapy, or who use it because of its role as stimulant and aspirin, nicotine and caffeine put together. The social significance of this fruit has lifted it from a mere unprofitable luxury to a vital necessity in the social and cultural settings of the Igbo, particularly the Ezinihitte Mbaise group in Imo State. Here kola nut cultural festival is celebrated annually and on rotation amongst the sixteen communities that make up the local government council area. The Oji Ezinihitte Mbaise cultural festival is not only an occasion for the communities to examine their progress and challenges, but also one for attracting visitors, friends and well-wishers from far and near to be part of a cultural fiesta that entertains guests to their souls. It is also used as a medium to attract government in their developmental projects as well as brain storm on other possibilities.

  • The Effect of Crude Oil Spill at Izombe, Imo State, Nigeria on Plankton Diversity and Abundance
Australian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences, 7(6): 178-183, 2013 ISSN 1991-8178 The effect of crude oil spill at Izombe, Imo State, Nigeria on plankton diversity and abundance 1Emmanuel M. Ikpeme, 2Chinasa Uttah and 1Emmanuel C. Uttah 1Department of Biological Sciences, Cross River University of Technology, Calabar, Nigeria. 2Department of Geography and Environmental Science, University of Calabar, Nigeria. Abstract: This work was aimed at assessing the effect of crude oil spill on the diversity and abundance of plankton communities of the Njaba River area of the spill. Sampling was carried out in 1999 in nine clusters of stations, three each from upstream, spill-point and downstream transects. Each cluster was made up of three perpendicular sampling points across the river. Standard methods were used in collecting, preserving, identifying and counting the plankton. A total of 60 species of phytoplankton in 55 genera were collected. Phytoplankton constituted 62.9% of abundance and 71.4% of plankton species collected. The MDI for the upstream was comparable to that of the downstream, and both are significantly higher than the MDI for the spill-point (×2-test; p < 0.05). In all, 122 zooplankton specimens in 24 species and 23 genera were collected. Zooplankton from the upstream clusters accounted for 81.1% of overall abundance and 95.8% of all the species collected. The more pollution- sensitive species such as the meroplankton were only found upstream and were totally absent in both downstream and spill-point clusters. Index of similarity between upstream and downstream shows 76% similarity for phytoplankton and 81% for zooplankton; but the index of similarity between the spill- point and either the upstream or downstream was quite low.
