I knew from experience, however, that the lower auditorium, which served during the day as the yeshiva’s dining hall, would slowly fill up. The ramp leading down to the back entrance was dimly lit. Actually the back access drive to the building, it was lined with piles of crates, wooden palettes, and discarded yeshiva gear. The foyer leading into the lower hall had been converted into a small religious emporium.     Black Matters: Young Ethiopian Jews and Race in Israel Gabriella Djerrahian Department of Anthropology McGill University, Montreal March 2014 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © Gabriella Djerrahian, March 2014 Elements of the thesis are considered original scholarship and distinct contributions to knowledge. Abstract This dissertation sheds light on the multiple articulations of race and blackness in Israel amongst two age groups of Ethiopian Jews (teenagers and young adults). My analysis of the stigma of Ethiopian Jewish blackness relies on a two-thronged approach. Racially speaking, on the one hand this group copes with lingering doubts as to the authenticity and “purity” in regards to their bloodline and genealogy. On the other hand, blackness as a racial stigma is located on the level of the epidermis and is, somatically speaking, skin deep. Both racial logics clash and contradict one another as Ethiopian Jews struggle to find their place in Jewish Israeli society. I describe in detail the historical period that formed the group that came to be known as Ethiopian Jews and recount the impact encounters with Western Jews had on their formation as black Jews living in Israel. I argue that their identity as Jews racially speaking is the platform on which Ethiopians’ blackness gains traction. As such, however marginalized, their position as “internal Others” cannot be disassociated from the larger legal and structural implications of their racial inclusion into the body of the Jewish meta-family. Race and ethnic relations amongst Jews are also explored as a way to provide the backdrop against which Ethiopian Jewish blackness and claims of racism emerged.

The project’s uniqueness is evident in the cooperation that it involves between two organizations from different sides of a bloody conflict, at the height of a violent confrontation, and their shared use of an innovative methodology that they developed to change problematic patterns of media coverage of the conflict on both sides. This joint effort aims to help the media uphold moderation and fairness and to reduce the incidence of bias, incitement, dehumanization and de- legitimization of the other side. During the time of this project, Israel waged two major military campaigns, in Lebanon and in the Gaza Strip, in which thousands of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians were killed. In the same period attacks by Palestinians killed dozens of Israelis.

I propose that such a society offers a variety of possibilities for what a woman is, what she can do, and how she can work. This dissertation is an ethnographic study of four female singer-songwriters that examines the ways they negotiate and sometimes challenge socio-cultural norms in creating their careers and constructing their artistic personae, or the version of themselves that they present as musicians. The artists I focus on straddle four major rifts in Israeli society, between Arabs and Jews, Mizrahim and Ashkenazim, Russian-speaking immigrants and native Israelis, and Orthodox and non-Orthodox communities. In using their ethnic heritage as cultural capital to corner a unique market niche, these artists become enmeshed in social politics that include tensions between ethnic and religious groups, conflicting gender roles, and struggles over belonging. I argue that as they create legible personae to meet the demands of the music industry, their liminality between mainstream society and a minority sector challenges the discourse around those identities.

During his military service, Ran was an infantry officer in the Nahal Brigade. He finished is service as a lieutenant and is now a platoon commander of the Border Guard, when called to Reserve duty. He has worked as a tour guide for several companies, mostly guiding youth groups from all over Israel during their educational excursions with school. His military, travel, tour guide experience very much enhance his role as the ASL coordinator. In his opinion, serving in the I.D.F. and living his life under Israel’s high-pressure security situation have given him a hardened knowledge of what ASL fellows should and must learn through this program. Joshua Gotay was a Visiting Student in the Israel Politics and Society programs at Hebrew University's Rothberg International School. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from West Virginia University where he received a bachelors in Political Science with a focus on Law and Legal systems. Additionally, he graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate and received his commission in May 2010 as an officer in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps. While in college, Joshua interned in the U.S. Coast Guard's Office of Budget and Programs, and served as an assistant program reviewer.

    Como Exportar Israel entre Ministério das Relações Exteriores Subsecretaria-Geral de Cooperação, Cultura e Promoção Comercial Departamento de Promoção Comercial e Investimentos Como Exportar 1 Israel Sumário Nota Assentamento em Territórios Árabes Ocupados Na Guerra dos Seis Dias, em 1967, o Estado de Israel ocupou territórios árabes, dos quais a Cisjordânia (inclusive Je- rusalém Oriental), a Faixa de Gaza e o Golã continuam ocupados. São conhecidos em conjunto como Territórios Árabes Ocupados (TAOs). Conforme o Direito Internacional e no entendimento do Brasil, os TAOs não pertencem a Israel, tampouco são territórios cuja posse encontra-se em disputa. A Resolução 242 (1967) do Conselho de Segurança das Nações Unidas determina a desocupação desses territórios. O Brasil reconhece o Estado de Israel desde 7 de fevereiro de 1949 e o Estado da Palestina desde 1º de dezembro de 2010, nas fronteiras de 1967, correspondentes às linhas dos armistícios de 1949, assinados por Israel, separadamente, com Egito, Jordânia, Líbano e Síria. A construção de assentamentos israelenses nos Territórios Árabes Ocupados é ilegal ante o Direito Internacional, contrariando a Quarta Convenção de Genebra e diversas resoluções do Conselho de Segurança e da Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas. Os assentamentos constituem um dos maiores obstáculos à paz entre Israel e seus vizinhos e à solução de dois Estados, Israel e Palestina. De acordo com o Direito Internacional, os assentamentos, as propriedades neles localizadas e entidades neles sediadas têm situação precária. O Governo brasileiro desencoraja transações financeiras e comerciais, investimentos, ou quaisquer outras atividades relacionadas aos assentamentos.
