As a community we are having to come to terms with living life in a way that none of us could have imagined only a few weeks ago but thankfully our government and we as a National Governing Body acted swiftly and we believe that this swift action will stand us in good stead as we live through these challenging times. There is not a house in the country that has not been affected by this pandemic and as no one knows when we will see some return to normality, we all must cut our cloth accordingly. Most of us have elderly parents, grandparents or relatives and it is incumbent on each of us to look after every one of them through this time. We have seen the Motorsport family reacting so positively many times before when one of our own needed help and we have every confidence that it is doing so right now. Social media has a role to play and now is the time for it to be hugely beneficial as a communication tool with so many restricted to staying at home. We appeal to everyone to respect the movement restrictions and the social distancing as it is proving to be the best way of fighting this terrible virus. Most of us were around in 2001 when foot and mouth stopped our sport before but even then, it was not a total international shutdown and many competitors travelled to France and Belgium to compete. The postponement of so many events is a huge blow to the motorsport community, but it was the right thing to do and the decision makers are to be commended for looking at the bigger picture as they considered such monumental decisions. The postponement of the West Cork Rally was especially difficult for the Cork Motor Club only hours before the event was to commence with many competitors already in Clonakilty. Motorsport Ireland have respected government guidelines regarding restrictions from the outset and will continue to do so for the greater good of the country and the current restriction on events up to June 29th will be continually reviewed. However, this will come to an end and motorsport will be back and when that time comes, we are 100% confident that our clubs and competitors will be ready, willing and able to step up to the challenge. The motorsport family is a strong one and we will survive. To everyone, be safe, respect our government’s instructions and look out for your family and friends. With our best wishes to you all, John Naylor Leo Hassett President Motorsport Ireland Chief Executive Officer 3 Mission Statement Motorsport Ireland is a club-based community supporting a fair and accessible sport for all ages. We will deliver this vision and mission by focusing on: Leadership – we commit to taking a fresh look at what our sport is. Community – we will value and recognise the broad motorsport community, build relationships and give a positive experience of the sport. Sustainability – we will secure our finances to support the vision for the sport and make the sport more affordable at entry level. Inspiration – we will showcase the sport and talent to provide inspiration to younger generations and to encourage people to become members of motorsport. Training – we will ensure our officials execute their functions in a strong and fair manner. Communications - we will be transparent in our rule making and decisions. Development – we will provide clear pathways through our sport, providing a positive experience and serving the needs of competitors, volunteers and clubs. Safety – we will always invest in safety. Fairness – we will seek a level playing field. 4 Introduction On March 27, Ireland was placed on full lockdown with all non-essential journeys banned. This had the added effect of cancelling all outdoor gatherings and all sporting events. Motorsport Ireland was one of the first sporting organisations to suspend all its events for the protection of its members and the public who attend them. Since then we have all looked on in shock as so many people in our society and around the world became ill and sadly passed away because of this deadly virus. Thankfully with the incredible work done by the frontline staff and the leadership shown by the Government, the HSE and the Chief Medical Officer we seem to have flattened the curve and are coming out the other side of the virus. There is still work to be done and we all must play our part in making sure that we do not let our guard down and go back to where we were several weeks ago. The Government, HSE and the Chief Medical Officer have laid down their plans to reopen the country and allow people to move around and to get back to some sort of normality. Sport will play a big part in this as it is a great way to socialise and very important for our mental wellbeing. With that in mind, it is important to note the following: Motorsport events are conducted outdoors and, in most cases, in locations with a large site area. There are generally two types of motorsports events, gated events and non-gated events. Gated events take place on tracks and purpose-built sites which

As I write this first update for the year I can tell you the resurfacing work on the Silverstone circuit is making good progress and should be ready in good time for the start of testing. Whilst we do not have a Championship or Series celebrating a major anniversary this year there are still some notable landmarks in which we are involved. We start with the tragic anniversary of Jim Clark’s untimely death 50 Years ago. Our Historic Formula 2 FIA International Series will be taking part in the race meeting that celebrates Jim’s life, the Jim Clark Revival on 21st – 22nd April at Hockenheim. On a happier note other 50th Anniversary events in which the club will be involved are the Thruxton 50th Anniversary Celebration and Mondello Park Historic Racing Festival. At Thruxton we have races for our Guards Trophy, Historic Formula Ford, Super Tourers, and an up to 2 litre Single seater race invited groups being HF2, Formula Atlantic, FF2000, Classic Formula 3 and Classic Racing Cars F2 and Formula B Libre Classes. Our Derek Bell Trophy Series is going to Mondello Park with the possibility of another group joining them for what will be a great party.

RACING, REGION, AND THE ENVIRONMENT: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN MOTORSPORTS By DANIEL J. SIMONE A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2009 1 © 2009 Daniel J. Simone 2 To Michael and Tessa 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A driver fails without the support of a solid team, and I thank my friends, who supported me lap-after-lap. I learned a great deal from my advisor Jack Davis, who when he was not providing helpful feedback on my work, was always willing to toss the baseball around in the park. I must also thank committee members Sean Adams, Betty Smocovitis, Stephen Perz, Paul Ortiz, and Richard Crepeau as well as University of Florida faculty members Michael Bowen, Juliana Barr, Stephen Noll, Joseph Spillane, and Bill Link. I respect them very much and enjoyed working with them during my time in Gainesville. I also owe many thanks to Dr. Julian Pleasants, Director Emeritus of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, and I could not have finished my project without the encouragement provided by Roberta Peacock. I also thank the staff of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. Finally, I will always be grateful for the support of David Danbom, Claire Strom, Jim Norris, Mark Harvey, and Larry Peterson, my former mentors at North Dakota State University. A call must go out to Tom Schmeh at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Suzanne Wise at the Appalachian State University Stock Car Collection, Mark Steigerwald and Bill Green at the International Motor Racing Resource Center in Watkins Glen, New York, and Joanna Schroeder at the (former) Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC).

However, although I have tried to make sure the information presented here is as correct and accurate as possible, some reservation is always necessary. Research is continuously progressing and may lead to new findings. Website In addition to the Racing Circuits Factbook file you are viewing, my website www.wegcircuits.nl offers several further downloadable pdf-files: theRennen! Races! Vitesse! pdf details over 700 racing circuits in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Austria, and also contains notes on Luxembourg and Switzerland. The American Road Courses pdf-documents lists nearly 160 road courses of past and present in the United States and Canada.
