HITLER’S GRAND PRIX IN ENGLAND HITLER’S GRAND PRIX IN ENGLAND Donington 1937 and 1938 Christopher Hilton FOREWORD BY TOM WHEATCROFT Haynes Publishing Contents Introduction and acknowledgements 6 Foreword by Tom Wheatcroft 9 1. From a distance 11 2. Friends - and enemies 30 3. The master’s last win 36 4. Life - and death 72 5. Each dangerous day 90 6. Crisis 121 7. High noon 137 8. The day before yesterday 166 Notes 175 Images 191 Introduction and acknowledgements POLITICS AND SPORT are by definition incompatible, and they're combustible when mixed. The 1930s proved that: the Winter Olympics in Germany in 1936, when the President of the International Olympic Committee threatened to cancel the Games unless the anti-semitic posters were all taken down now, whatever Adolf Hitler decrees; the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin and Hitler's look of utter disgust when Jesse Owens, a negro, won the 100 metres; the World Heavyweight title fight in 1938 between Joe Louis, a negro, and Germany's Max Schmeling which carried racial undertones and overtones. The fight lasted 2 minutes 4 seconds, and in that time Louis knocked Schmeling down four times. They say that some of Schmeling's teeth were found embedded in Louis's glove... Motor racing, a dangerous but genteel activity in the 1920s and early 1930s, was touched by this, too, and touched hard. The combustible mixture produced two Grand Prix races at Donington Park, in 1937 and 1938, which were just as dramatic, just as sinister and just as full of foreboding. This is the full story of those races.

As I write this first update for the year I can tell you the resurfacing work on the Silverstone circuit is making good progress and should be ready in good time for the start of testing. Whilst we do not have a Championship or Series celebrating a major anniversary this year there are still some notable landmarks in which we are involved. We start with the tragic anniversary of Jim Clark’s untimely death 50 Years ago. Our Historic Formula 2 FIA International Series will be taking part in the race meeting that celebrates Jim’s life, the Jim Clark Revival on 21st – 22nd April at Hockenheim. On a happier note other 50th Anniversary events in which the club will be involved are the Thruxton 50th Anniversary Celebration and Mondello Park Historic Racing Festival. At Thruxton we have races for our Guards Trophy, Historic Formula Ford, Super Tourers, and an up to 2 litre Single seater race invited groups being HF2, Formula Atlantic, FF2000, Classic Formula 3 and Classic Racing Cars F2 and Formula B Libre Classes. Our Derek Bell Trophy Series is going to Mondello Park with the possibility of another group joining them for what will be a great party.

I believe it is the most comprehensive and accurate you will find anywhere. However, although I have tried to make sure the information presented here is as correct and accurate as possible, some reservation is always necessary. Research is continuously progressing and may lead to new findings. Website In addition to the Racing Circuits Factbook file you are viewing, my website www.wegcircuits.nl offers several further downloadable pdf-files: theRennen! Races! Vitesse! pdf details over 700 racing circuits in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Austria, and also contains notes on Luxembourg and Switzerland. The American Road Courses pdf-documents lists nearly 160 road courses of past and present in the United States and Canada. These files are the most comprehensive and accurate sources for racing circuits in said countries. My website also lists nearly 5000 dates of motorcycle road races in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland, allowing you to see exactly when many of the motorcycle circuits listed in the Rennen! Races! Vitesse! document were used.

  • Baku: the Fastest Street Circuit of the Year, with the Longest Straight
BAKU: THE FASTEST STREET CIRCUIT OF THE YEAR, WITH THE LONGEST STRAIGHT Milan, April 23, 2018 – Compared to last year, the selection of tyres that Pirelli brings to Baku are two steps softer, with soft, supersoft and ultrasoft nominated. One step comes from the actual selection, the next from the fact that all the compounds are a step softer than their 2017 equivalents anyway. That’s not the only important difference. This year, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is being held two months earlier than it was previously, meaning we can expect cooler conditions. THE CIRCUIT FROM A TYRE POINT OF VIEW With the race starting just after 4pm, track temperatures cool rapidly as the sun begins to go down. None of the free practice sessions take place at exactly the same time as the race start though. Because Baku is a street circuit tightly enclosed by buildings, there are many areas of lights and shade, making track temperatures even harder to assess. The main straight is two kilometres long, which means that the tyres can cool down before the braking area at the end of it. After Spa, Baku is the second-longest lap of the season. Last year’s strategy was affected by safety cars and a red flag, which can play a prominent role on the narrow track – cars have often tangled in the tight confines of Baku previously. The winning strategy involved three tyre changes last year, with the second one taking place during the safety car period and the last one under red flag conditions. Daniel Ricciardo won the race starting from 10th position on the grid with a supersoft-soft-supersoft-supersoft strategy.

  • Press Release November 29, 2019
Press Release November 29, 2019 2020 race calendar with Zandvoort debut Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup features at eight Formula 1 rounds Stuttgart. For the 2020 season, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will again support the premier class of motorsport: the calendar of the one-make cup, in which 485 hp Por- sche 911 GT3 Cup vehicles are fielded, is made up of eight rounds run as part of the Formula One support programme for the upcoming season. The Supercup will also visit Zandvoort. The seaside resort town near Amsterdam is the venue for the Dutch Grand Prix and hosts a Formula 1 race for the first time in 2020. The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup has been part of the F1 support programme since its 1993 debut season. With the extension of the Formula 1 contract up to and including 2022, the decision was made to focus on the eight European rounds in the future. After the official tests in Barcelona (Spain), the 28th season takes off with the first F1 Euro- pean round at the Circuit Zandvoort. The 2020 Supercup calendar also includes cham- pionship rounds on the legendary street circuit in Monte Carlo (Monaco) and at Hun- gary’s Hungaroring – two events that have been a permanent fixture on the series’ race calendar since the debut season. The Supercup teams will also line up to compete at Barcelona, Spielberg (Austria), Silverstone (Great Britain) and Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium). Italy’s Autodromo Nazionale Monza hosts the final round of the season. Each of the eight events includes a 30-minute sprint race.
