This MBI program gives you, as a member of the Habonim Dror youth movement, the information and experiences you will draw on to become a young leader in your camp, your communities and your adult lives. North American and International Habonim Dror youth come together to share their diverse insights into topics such as social justice, community building, , and Arab–Israeli relations. You will be given the opportunity to learn independently and communally about your connection to Israel and your place in Jewish society. Experiencing Israeli life over five weeks gives you the tools to connect to your Jewish identity and Israel.

Arrival: MBIers meet your Israeli guides at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv and begin your 5 week adventure in Israel!

Introductions: Travel south to Jerusalem and participate in the opening Tekes (ceremony) of MBI where you are introduced to each other and to the Habonim Dror MBI program.

Orientation: Learn the goals, highlights, safety rules and regulations of MBI. Examine maps of the Middle East and learn the basic geography and topography of Israel. Get to know your kvutza and your madrichim.

Shabbat in Jerusalem: As we get ready for our first Shabbat, we head to a beautiful look-out point to take pictures and do Kabbalat Shabbat with our ancient capital as a spectacular backdrop.

Orientation + Shabbat: We start the day by sleeping in to put the jet lag behind us. We hold Shabbat chuggim (informal discussion groups) and continue with our orientation activities. As a highlight to the day, we take a short walk from our hostel to the Armon Hanatziv area to see the entire city of Jerusalem spread before our eyes and begin to get a taste of all that we will visit in the next few days.

Explore Secular and Religious Issues: Participate in a workshops present- ing diverse religious perspectives led by either Anat Hoffman, President of Women of the Wall, or Haim Watzman, a member of the Kehilat Yedidya community for liberal Orthodox Judaism.

Desert Camel Trek: Enjoy the far reaches of the desert from the back of a camel! Kfar Hanokdim: Visit a Bedouin community and learn about Bedouin history and culture while sipping coffee in a pouring ceremony like none you’ve ever seen. Tnua Achot Peulot: All the participants from MBI and HaNoar HaOved reconnect at Kibbutz Eshbal, an educators’ kibbutz in the Galilee established by HaNoar HaOved in 1998. We kick things off by going on a hike in the Eshbal area.

Kabbalot Shabbat: MBI learned about HaNoar HaOved at the Ken but Shabbat is the time for our Israeli friends to learn all of our HDNA Shabbat camp traditions. Lochamei HaGetaot Museum: Learn about The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, & how youth movements during grew out of sense of communal responsibility and how members of our parent movement, Dror, led this Uprising.

Akko: Meander through the city’s markets and streets finding treasures for friends and family while learning about the history of this ancient city that dates back to the Bronze Age. DAY 34 SECURITY & IDEOLOGY 8/4/14

Hatzbani Water Hike: On this beautiful water trek in the Golan, we learn how efforts to divert the water in 1967 helped lead to the 6-Day War.

Har Ben Tal: This mount with great panoramic views of the Golan and . is the site a courageous battle fought during theYom Kippur War where a small band of outnumbered Israeli troops kept Syria from pushing into the heart of the Galilee and on towards Haifa.

Tisha B’av: We will open the historic day of destruction with an evening activity looking back at travails that the Jewish people have faced through- out the last two millennia.

MEMORIAL VISIT 8/5/14

Helicopter Memorial: Two Israeli helicopters collided here near the Lebanon border in 1997, killing 73 soldiers and sending shockwaves throughout the country. Many of the bereaved mothers successfully lobbied the Israeli government to stop sending troops to south Lebanon.

Letter writing: To close out Tisha B’Av and start our sikkum (closing) seminar of MBI, you will split into kvutzot and write reflective letters to the people whom you’ve shared your summer with.

Sikkum: Reflect on your personal MBI experience with other MBIers and share your suggestions for next year’s MBI trip. Recap and remember all the places you’ve been this summer, and discuss how you want to be involved in the movement when you return home.

Closing Ceremony: Laugh and remember our wonderful trip with a slide- show and final musicale.
