ABSTRACT In this contextual study I investigate why and how the traditional approach to mission, engaged by Anglican missionaries, gave rise to a dual observance of ritual among Shona Anglican Christians. I begin by establishing the significance and essence of Shona views of death and the dead, then investigate the missionaries' historical background. I highlight that Christian arrogance, in the guise of racial superiority, underlies the confrontational and condemnatory approach. Traditional views were considered evil, in their place, Shona converts were forced to adopt western Christian views as the only acceptable and valid way of coping with this eschatological reality. These views did not usually fit the Shona worldviews and religious outlook, hence the adoption of dual observance. -

The service was presided over by the President of Synod and Diocesan Bishop of Lagos and Chief Missioner; His Lordship, The Rt. Rev. Dr. Humphrey Bamisebi Olumakaiye. The theme for the Synod was THE UNFAILING FAITH OF OUR FATHERS: EVER SUFFICIENT (2 Timothy 1:5). 1.02. The Diocesan Mass Choir that comprised of choristers from The Cathedral Church of Christ, Our Saviour's Church TBS, Anglican Church on the Peninsula Ajah, St. Peter's Church Ikota and Church of Pentecost Ajah led the First Procession. They were closely followed by the Readers and Agents with the Hymn WIS 4 – ‘A Mighty Fortress is Our God’. 1.03 The Second Procession was made up of the Clergy filing in juniores priores was next with the Hymn A&MNS 156 ‘Come Down, O Love, Divine’ and they were led in by the Priests' Verger. -

This article investigates the early history of the Native Authority Police Force in the town of Abeokuta in order to trace a larger move towards coercive forms of administration in the early twentieth century. In this period the police in Abeokuta developed from a primarily civil force tasked with managing crime in the rapidly growing town, into a political implement of the colonial government. -

The views presented in this paper represent those of the authors and are in no way attributable to the Ministry. 1 Abstract Christians constitute a significant minority in northern Nigeria. This report introduces some of the main dynamics that characterize the contemporary Christian population of Nigeria, with a focus on Christianity in northern Nigeria. It sketches the origins of the divide between ‘old’ and ‘new’ Christian movements and presents data on the demographics and diversity of Nigerian Christianity, suggesting that there are five main Christian movements in Nigeria: the Roman Catholics, the ‘orthodox’ Protestants, the African Protestants, the Aladura churches, and finally the Pentecostals. Furthermore, the paper discusses some of the ways in which Nigerian Christians are positioning themselves and their religion in Nigeria’s public sphere. -

In the face of ongoing ministry challenges in Niger a new perspective is appropriate. Recent trends in missions recommend Church Planting Movements as a model for church-planting ministry in cross-cultural contexts. The church planting movements model may offer some solutions for church planting in Niger but the model tends to suffer from faulty prooftexting and inadequate theology related to the church and mission. Using theological reflection as a guiding model, church-planting-movement theology and practices are compared to John's Wesley's theology and practice. -

The methodology adopted is historical approach. The history of church growth and development in Nigeria is divided into five periods namely: the period of introducing Latin Christianity in the 15th and 16th Centuries; the period of Denominationalism and missionary activities in the 19th Century from 1842 onward; the period of evolution of independent Churches; the period of indigenous African Churches; and the period of the birth of Charismatic and Pentecostal Churches. It is established in the paper that church growth led to numerical strength of churches as seen in the proliferation of churches in Nigeria. It is observed that the dramatic rise of charismatic and Pentecostal movement led to the emergence of new churches and evangelical groups. The work suggested the establishment of more churches and the practice of ethical and moral teachings of the Bible. It concludes by recommending that church growth and development should not be based on orthodoxy but orthopraxis in order to change African society for better.
