It was lovely to see everyone engaging in books and reading activities. Every time we have this event we are blown away by the creative costumes and thought that goes into props. We even had Mr Twit visit the school although a number of people thought they had seen Hagrid instead! Thank you everyone for your efforts in making this event a success. Saying Goodbye to Mrs Morgan Mrs Morgan has decided to leave Broadwindsor School at the end of the summer term to pursue new ventures including spending more time with her family and planning travel adventures. I am sure you will all be saddened by the news but be happy for Mrs Morgan. Mrs Morgan in her time at the school has worked tirelessly for our youngest pupils in school, preparing them to be life-long learners. We have appreciated her experience and expertise in early years and this has shown in the outcomes the school has achieved in the past three years. She has also shared her wealth of experience in special needs in her time at the school being our SENCO. Mrs Morgan will be working with Mrs Killick closely for the remaining part of the school year who will become our SENCO from September. We wish her all the best for the future and we very much hope she will keep in contact with the school. Governors will now start the process of appointing a class teacher for our school and will focus on ensuring we appoint an excellent teacher who has the skills to teach our youngest children, but who also shares our commitment to nurturing and supporting pupils. We will keep you updated about the recruitment process. Information around School re-opening Tomorrow we will have the final push to be ready for Monday when we will be welcoming everybody back, which we are all excited about. Just a few quick reminders to make Monday and beyond go smoothly: Firstly please can you gather all the children’s remote learning books and trays and get them ready to bring back on Monday. If you have borrowed any ICT equipment we ask you also to bring that back on Monday so it can be quickly reconfigured to be used back in school. If you travel by school transport, this will run as normal with the same safety measures in place. Start and end of day arrangements stay the same as the Autumn term. Arrive between 8.30am and 8.45am at school but no earlier than 8.30am please and enter through the designated entrance. Mary Anning and Thomas Hardy pupils enter through the main gate; William Barnes and Jane Austen pupils through the MUGA entrance by the shop. Obviously if you have younger pupils to drop off too, use the entrance easier for you to navigate the site safely. Parents can accompany pupils into the playground but are not to enter the school buildings. Adults will need to wear a face covering when on the school site. BEAMINSTER PYRAMID Extra staff will be around to help on Monday morning so please do ask if you have any problems. At the end of the day, parents are asked to enter the site at the appropriate pick up time: Mary Anning (3.10pm) - stand on the bottom playground near to the Fort Thomas Hardy (3.10pm) – stand on the top playground William Barnes (3.15pm) – stand on MUGA Jane Austen (3.15pm) – stand on bottom playground (hedge side). On the School website you will find our slightly revised Classroom Guide for returning to school and the risk assessment detailing all the measures we are doing to keep our school community safe. Please check the guide for School uniform requirements including what to wear on PE days. Class teachers will communicate via email over the next couple of days including letting you know PE days for your classes when they start next week. As previously, if your child displays any of the following symptoms associated with Coronavirus please do not send your child to school: a high temperature a new, continuous cough or the loss or change of their sense of taste or smell We ask that you get tested if you have any of these symptoms. As pupils return to school it is inevitable that some children may feel unwell for example with a sore throat, stomach upset or a headache. These pupils and students don’t need to book a test but may need to stay off school and seek medical advice through their GP or pharmacist as usual. We are unable to administer non-prescription medication such as Calpol. Music update Music lessons by peripatetic teachers will not start to at least the week beginning 15th March with most not beginning face to face until after Easter. However drumming lessons with Mr Halsey will begin on the Friday 19th March. Once again thank you all of you for supporting remote learning and school at this time. School staff are very much looking forward to teaching everyone face to face. We will concentrate first of all on providing the children with experiences that will help them feel happy, confident and safe about learning back in school.     ABSTRACT Hopkins’s Homer: A Scholarly Edition of Gerard Manley Hopkins’s Dublin Notes on the Iliad Melinda Creech, Ph.D. Mentor: Joshua King, Ph.D. In a letter to his mother (13 January 1886), Gerard Manley Hopkins mentioned that he was “taking notes for one [a book] on Homer’s art.”(CW II 757). These notes on the Iliad, made while Hopkins was living in Dublin, on sixty-five pages of folded sheets of paper, are housed at Campion Hall, Oxford. In the Campion Hall manuscript, Hopkins makes this final statement: “After this I am going to make my notes mainly on my interleaved book. Feb. 12 ’86.” Those additional fifteen pages, interleaved into his copy of Homeri Ilias (1883), are housed at the Foley Library, Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington. Taken together, the two sets of notes, consisting of 514 items and pertaining to fifty- seven pages in his edition of the Iliad, were written between November 1884 and ca. February 1886. A transcription of Hopkins’s notes, those housed at Campion Hall, and those housed at Gonzaga University, and a commentary on those notes comprises the bulk of the dissertation. These Dublin Notes on the Iliad, written by Hopkins during one of the darkest times of his life, when he was estranged from his country, his family, and his beloved Wales, provide a unique insight into the way he regarded the art of Homer’s poetry—the way Homer ordered the words, phrases, and lines that contributed to that poetry; the way that “stock” epithets were not stock at all, but expressed nuanced characteristics of the things and people they modified; the value Homer placed on the inscape of words, fitting each word into its place in the lines of dactylic hexameter—and the way Hopkins reflected his study of Homer in his own poetry, particularly the poetry he wrote and revised while living in Ireland.

Alwes ABSTRACT This dissertation explores how the art songs of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) composed before the Great War expressed the composer’s vision of “Englishness” or “English national identity”. These terms can be defined as the popular national consciousness of the English people. It is something that demands continual reassessment because it is constantly changing. Thus, this study takes into account two key areas of investigation. The first comprises the poets and texts set by the composer during the time in question. The second consists of an exploration of the cultural history of British and specifically English ideas surrounding pastoralism, ruralism, the trope of wandering in the countryside, and the rural landscape as an escape from the city. This dissertation unfolds as follows. The Introduction surveys the literature on Vaughan Williams and his songs in particular on the one hand, and on the other it surveys a necessarily selective portion of the vast literature of English national identity. The introduction also explains the methodology applied in the following chapters in analyzing the music as readings of texts. The remaining chapters progress in the chronological order of Vaughan Williams’s career as a composer.

    INTRODUCTION Family background Many years ago my grandmother Annie Lucy Shirley (née Hammond) sent me her family tree. I was born and brought up in England whereas my grandmother was born in Brisbane in 1883 and spent her married life in Sydney. I met her only during the course of a working holiday in Australia when I was a student in mid-1964. She died in Sydney in 1980. The family tree showed that my grandmother’s grandmother was another Lucy Hammond, born in 1804. It went on to show that the earlier Lucy’s parents were Henry Kaines and Ann Clarke; that Henry and Ann lived at Manston; that Henry had two sisters called Elizabeth and Lucy; and that, apart from Lucy, Henry and Ann had eight children. The family tree has turned out to be substantially accurate and complete - although Henry Kaines (HK) spelt his wife’s family name Clark and her name is spelt Anne in Manston church. For many years I have known that my grandmother’s parents, Edward and Dora Hammond, initially called their house in Queensland ‘Gaer Hill’ and that later they changed its name to ‘Manston.’ My grandmother’s grandmother Lucy Hammond (née Kaines) died at the parsonage in the tiny Somerset hamlet of Gaer Hill in 1871 and she is buried in the beautiful churchyard there. Edward Hammond’s youngest brother Rev. Baldwin Hammond was the curate at Gaer Hill at the time. Following a visit to Queensland by Baldwin, Edward changed the name to ‘Manston’ in honour of their mother’s birthplace.
