Amstrad Pc1640 Technical Manual Cover Index Contents Preface This Technical Reference Manual is intended primarily to assist writers of software for the Amstrad PC1640, although in conjunction with the PC1640 Service Manual it will be of interest to designers of add-on hardware. It is assumed that the reader has a working knowledge of the Industry Standard architecture comprising of an 8086 (or 8088) with DMA, PIT, RTC and Interrupt Controller support chips; plus Extended Graphics Adapter (or Color Graphics Adapter) with Floppy Disk, Serial and Parallel Adapters. The information contained herein is largely unique to this document, with the exception of parts of the appendices which expand on the information contained in the PC1640 User Instructions and the Microsoft MSDOS Reference Manual. Whilst the PC1640 implements a superset of the Industry Standard, this manual makes no attempt to identify those areas of the PC1640 specification which exceed the Industry Standard. Users should, therefore, exercise caution when writing software for a range of manufacturers' PCs and only use the "Lowest Common Denominator" facilities if simple portability is required. © Copyright 1987 AMSTRAD Plc. manual provides a comprehensive description of the AMSTRAD PC1640 hardware and firmware. General information about the PC1640, GEM Desktop and the delivered operating system software is contained in the AMSTRAD PC1640 USER GUIDE. This manual is intended to satisfy the needs of advanced developers who must have access to the various resources available within the PC1640. Note that all address constants in this document are hexadecimal. In addition hexadecimal quantities are noted with small letter 'h' terminator to denote that they are in hexadecimal form.

It is becoming increasingly common for some source material to arrive on our desks after having been transferred to digital format, but little of the material on which we work was actually born digital. Anyone whose work is being done today is likely to leave behind very little that is not digital. Being digital changes everything. This article discusses the issues involved in the protection of digital objects. Keywords: digital preservation. Erasmus summarised well the outlook of many historians of computing when he remarked “When I get a little money, I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes”! Most of us love second-hand bookshops, libraries and archives, their smell, their restful atmosphere, the ever-present promise of discovery, and the deep intoxication produced by having the accumulated knowledge of the world literally at our fingertips. Our research obliges us to spend many happy hours uncovering and studying old letters, notebooks, and other paper-based records. It is becoming increasingly common for some source material to arrive on our desks after having been transferred to digital format, but little of the material on which we work was actually born digital. Future historians of computing will have a very different experience. Doubtless they, like us, will continue to privilege primary sources over secondary, and perhaps written sources will still be preferred to other forms of historical record, but for the first time since the emergence of writing systems some 4,000 years ago, scholars will be increasingly unable to access directly historical material.

Juanga's PCem Page (Old PC Emulator) PCem is a really cool emulator that is like VirtualBox or VMWare but allowing to bring back to life IBM PCs or Clone PCs (Personal Computers) at “hardware level”, like XT, 286, 386, 486, Pentium, etc. with Sound Blaster and old CGA graphics, EGA, VGA or SVGA. This is different from other programs like DosBox. You want to use PCem to really emulate hardware or if you have problems with some old software that need proper, more accurate emulation. In fact, with PCem you'll be emulating the hardware motherboard along with its BIOS: pretty cool.     Amstrad PC-series Technical Details and Trivia Connectors • (Different depending on the computer series and model) Technical Facts • The power supply for the PC1512 and PC1640 system units are built into their respective supplied monitor, rather than being inside the system unit itself. This allowed Amstrad to do away with a cooling fan. • The PC2086 and PC3086 XT computers contain Paradise PVGA1A chipsets embedded on the motherboard that support VGA graphics and come with 256K of dedicated video RAM (VRAM). • The floppy drives used in all Amstrad PCs are 100% compatible with other PCs. They do, however, have jumpers on them that specify whether they are to be treated as Drive 0 or Drive 1. The one exception to this is the PC5086 whose Citizen drive uses a non-standard 26-pin connector which carries both data and power. • Although PC1512 monitors display a CGA image (yes, even the "MD" monochrome monitor), they are not electrically compatible with other CGA monitors. For example, the PC1512 uses a composite sync signal, whereas normal CGA has seperate horizontal and vertical syncs. This means the PC1512 monitor is almost useless outside of its original purpose with the PC1512 system unit. In addition, this CGA graphics chipset could not support the more common Hercules monochrome graphics standard. • The PPC portable Amstrad computers used a hard drive called the Stratum Sprint. Other Amstrad XT hard drives before the 3-series used RLL (Run Length Limited) encoding. After the 3-series, all drives were XT-IDE compatible. These drives can be changed to 'AT-IDE' mode to make it work on a modern PC, by changing its jumpers.
