Long Live the Seas, the Sailors, and Authentic Friendships Gstaad, 10th January 2021 Long live the Seas, the Sailors, and authentic Friendships Friendship is written in capital letters in the sailing world as much as in the Saanenland. Same has been felt when a few days back, GYC member, Anthony Bannwart, mentioned he was expecting the visit of a friend which also happened to be a Champion. As the New Year sailed off, the Gstaad Yacht Club was toasted with the discrete visit of Mateusz Kusznierewicz an unpretentious World Class sailor, that certainly contributed with his share to the success of the sailing sport at the international level. The GYC had just fulfilled, again, the purpose of a Yacht Club; to welcome the sailors and honour the friendship of these men of the seas! Picture GYC: Mateusz Kusnzierewicz at GYC clubhouse More than two decades ago, the GYC founding members intended to create a unique and global yacht club away from the waters instead of another local yacht club by the waters. This Vision became increasingly more real as time went by, and with that Gstaad made its way into the Swiss sailing scene through the GYC Racing Team, helping our sailors succeed by achieving their career objectives. Not only that, slowly but steadily the GYC is now an important hub for sailors from around the world, happily harbouring and welcoming them into our safe “port” in the Swiss Alps. Mateusz Kusznierewicz, holding an extensive palmares, always competed for the highest positions of the sport in the Finn and Star class, the same boat classes in which GYC current and past Racing team members have been competing; Nils Theuninck now in the Finn; Flavio Marazzi from 2000 to 2012 in the Star. Mateusz conquered his own spot of glory winning important titles as the Gold Medal in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta (USA) and Bronze in Athens in 2004 in the Finn Class, Gold in 1998 in the Finn World Championships in Athens (GRE), Gold in the 2008 and 2019 editions of the Star World Championships in Picture- ZVG: Mateusz Kusznierewicz triumphing over Bronze in the Olympics in Athens 2004 Miami (USA) and Porto Cervo (ITA) respectively, Gold in the Star European Championship in 2012 among many other. Mateusz Kusznierewicz was also distinguished with the 1999 World Sailor of the Year award by the International Sailing Federation. His major sport achievements granted him as well other significant awards and recognitions away from the waters. Nowadays Mateusz is sharing his knowledge and experience with others. He experienced great victories but also big setbacks. Lots of valuable lessons learned. He is mentoring other athletes. Sailors but also professional golfers and talented snowboarder. “Mentoring and coaching is a new very interesting experience and challenge for me. I found myself comfortable with it. I have a natural gift of seeing things others don’t see and being able to picture it when talking to someone” – said Mateusz when visiting Gstaad Yacht Club in January this year. “It also gives me a new perspective for my own sailing in the Star and 5.5 classes” he adds. The most important project Mateusz is working on now is the Mundial in Sailing. Like the football World Cup, this is the ultimate challenge between sailing nations. The first edition of the SSL Gold Cup will be held in May and June 2022 in Switzerland. National representations from 56 countries will be competing against each other on the one design, 14-meter-long yachts provided by the SSL (Star Sailors League) with headquarters in Grandson. Qualification rounds will be sailed on lake Neuchâtel. Quarterfinals, Semis and the great Final on Lake Léman in Geneva. The SSL Gold Cup will be a great spectacle for the global audience, simple to understand, free to follow online and easy to access thanks to the location of the event village. Everyone will be able to meet sailing legends and the best sailors including Olympic Champions, Americas Cup winners, Volvo Ocean Race heros and many more. The young generation and experienced athletes, men and women will be working together to win the SSL Gold Cup. Mateusz, as SSL Gold Cup General Director, is working in the international SSL management team to deliver events like never before. One can follow the SSL National Teams trainings and preparations for Sailing Mundial by following SSL media in internet. A sailor such Mateusz Kusznierewicz we know, will always be directly connected to the sailing sport and so the GYC wishes him all but good winds. Meanwhile the GYC remain committed in the pursuit of the Vision and ideals of our founding members and working daily to bring them to reality. Editors' notes: The Gstaad Yacht Club was founded in 1998 by a group of sailor enthusiasts with the vision to "create a unique global yacht club away from the waters, instead of another local club by the waters". Based in the Swiss mountains and in the beginning, very often acknowledged with surprise, the GYC developed to a club with 400 members from over 20 different countries and to a place where members and their guests love to meet. The GYC supports sailing projects on all levels from juniors to professional sailors and it has become a solid force on the Swiss sailing scene and especially among Olympic sailing and the classic yachts. • A Brief History of the Finn Class at the Olympic Games
A brief history of the Finn Class at the Olympic Games Par Robert Reaves Olympics The Finn made its first appearance at the Olympic Games back in 1952. That year Paul Elvstrøm won the second of his four Gold medals on his way to setting a record that has, so far, stood for 52 years. More than five decades later Ben Ainslie stands on the brink of breaking that record, as he has broken so many other records in his 10 years in the class. If he does it would be one of the defining moments of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Finn is the oldest dinghy class that is being used at the 2012 Olympic Games. In fact this year marks its 60th anniversary of includion at the Games and is the 16th time it will be used. Over those 60 years it has modernised and embraced new technologies but is fundamentally the same design. But to go back to the very beginning... The Olympics in 1952 were assigned to Helsinki, Finland and the Finish Yachting Association, who had been assigned the job of selecting the class for the Monotype, ran a competition for a new boat designed specifically for the Olympics which could also be used for sailing competitions in Scandinavia. The Finn was selected from a design entered by Swedish Olympian Rickard Sarby. Paul Elvstrøm swept the board to win by nearly 3,000 points from Charles Currey of Great Britain, who took Silver. Elvstrøm won four of the seven races in a fleet of 28 boats and set a standard which has never been equalled.

  • A Pictorial History of the Star Class
A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE STAR CLASS 1911 2011 FOREWORD From its very beginning the Star Class has attracted photographers’ attention. Morris Rosenfeld and Edwin Levick were among the early photographers who took pictures of the Star. The beauty and power of the modern Star boat continues to be an object interest for both amateur and professional photographer. We are thus fortunate to have a fairly good pictorial record of the Star Class starting with those early days of 1911 when the Stars first put in an appearance on Long Island Sound and at Nahant Dory Club in Massachusetts. The Star Class also has a very good historical record of itself. An annual Log which lists the boats and their owners, gives race results, carries the Class Rules, and other pertinent information has been published since 1922. An additional source of information is available from Starlights, the Star Class newsletter which has been published since 1925. Added to these sources there are two history books about the Star Class: “Forty Years Among the Star”, written by George W. Elder, and “A History of the Star Class”, written by Class Historian and long-time Log and Starlights editor C. Stanley Ogilvy. It is the purpose of this pictorial history to bring together some of the more interesting photographs and events which have appeared in the Star Class publications. PRELUDE The Gaff Rigged Era 1911 – 1920 (and before) The history of the Star began even before 1911. In 1906 a boat called the Bug was designed in the office of William Gardner in New York.
