FACULTY BOWL AWARD

The Faculty Bowl is that award which is presented to the senior who, in the opinion of the faculty, has contributed the most to Colonia High School. The person who receives this honor must be an individual who has demonstrated unselfish service to the school and who has maintained a good academic record. This individual must have demonstrated those personal qualities which make one an exemplary school citizen. The recipient of this award of this award will be announced at graduation.

4. THE MICHAEL J. PRONGAY MEMORIAL ATHLETIC AWARD Michael J Prongay was a founder and integrally involved with the Colonia Pop Warner program. Through the Michael J Prongay Memorial Scholarship it is our intent to provide scholarships to graduating male and female athletes who will be furthering their education. 5. THE PATRICIA PRONGAY CHAMBERLAIN CHEERLEADING AWARD Patti was co-captain of the Cheerleading team while attending CHS. This award will be presented to a graduating cheerleader recognized for high energy, positive school and team spirit, academically strong and socially minded. These qualities exemplify our sister. 9. *THE BENJAMIN S. CHMIEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Benjamin S. Chmiel was an avid fan in our township for over forty years. He took great pride in watching his family members coach and play. This award is presented annually to a Colonia athlete who, in addition to a dedication to Colonia High School’s activities, has a strong commitment to family and a good academic record. 12. THE WOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP ATHLETIC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION/HALL OF FAME AWARDS are presented to athletes who represent their in both performance and leadership. The recipients demonstrate a competitive spirit, great enthusiasm, a sense of fair play, they exhibit good sportsmanship and take pride in their activities. 17. THE CYNTHIA AYALA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented in memory of 2011 Colonia High School graduate, Cynthia Ayala. Cynthia was a member of the cross country, winter track and teams, and will always be remembered for her infectious smile and laugh. Cynthia’s positive attitude was contagious, and her presence could brighten anyone’s day. This award will be presented to a senior female athlete who best exemplifies Cynthia’s cheerfulness and enthusiasm that inspired those around her. CHAGARIS AWARD is presented to a student who has displayed a sincere interest in the social studies courses, plans on attending a four year college and who, in the opinion of the Scholarship Committee, is a worthy recipient. 19. *THE CAPTAIN JOSEPH M. FURDA MEMORIAL AWARD is presented in commemoration of Captain Joseph M. Furda, Colonia High School Class of 1968, U. S. Air Force Academy Class of 1972. Captain Furda was a pilot who gave his life in service to his country. This award is given to a student who not only shows a sincere interest in history but also an insight into historical aspects that have molded our country. 20. *THE GEORGE BRAND "G" SCHOLARSHIP AWARD is presented to a male senior, who exemplifies some of George’s exceptional qualities of scholastic achievement, high intellect, kindness, loyalty, generosity, hilarious sense of humor, and commitment to mankind. The recipient is a courageous soul who carries The Light forward in a way that cannot be ignored. Most of all, the winner of the award will be remembered as having made their years at Colonia High School the best years of their lives. 21. THE CHS COUNSELING DEPARTMENT AWARD is presented to a senior who has shown that a person's character is not measured by their success but by their ability to overcome obstacles. He or she has proven that no matter what life throws at them, they will persevere. This person has shown substantial academic and personal growth during their time at Colonia High School. 22. *THE JOSEPH S. KOURY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2006 by Carl and Maryann Palmisano to honor the memory of former Colonia High School Principal, Joseph S. Koury, who passed away in December, 2005. The recipient of this scholarship will have demonstrated the qualities of discipline, perseverance and commitment to overcome a potentially self-defeating life experience. This scholarship, in his memory, honors those values he held in highest esteem, and seeks to publicly recognize and reward this individual for this achievement. 23. *THE KERRI ANNE PICCINICH MEMORIAL AWARD is presented by the Piccinich family in memory of their daughter Kerri Anne. This award is given to a student who best exemplifies the determination and qualities of Kerri Anne. These personal qualities include integrity, a love and appreciation of life, an enthusiastic yearning for knowledge, a commitment and dedication to family, and a genuine concern for people and for our environment. The recipient of this award must be an excellent student/athlete who will continue his/her education in college by majoring in mathematics, engineering or the sciences. 24. THE AMERICAN IRISH ASSOCIATION, INC. – JUSTIN MCCARTHY AWARD will be presented to a graduating seniors of Irish descent who have performed outstanding community service. Presenter: Mrs. Ann DiNicola Recipient:

25. *THE ROBERT H. SANISLOW AWARD is presented to a senior student who exemplifies the qualities of Mr. Robert H. Sanislow, a former Colonia High School principal. Among these qualities are confidence, self-motivation, leadership, a genuine concern for others, and loyalty and dedication to Colonia High School. 27. *THE TONYELL F. MCDAY MEMORIAL AWARD Tonyell McDay was a Colonia High School 1994 graduate who perished on September 11, 2001. A World Trade Center heroine, Tonyell was a very cheerful, compassionate, ambitious and spiritual young lady. She honored her family and treasured education. This award will be presented to a senior young lady who exemplifies the qualities and virtues that Tonyell possessed. THE EDWARD PERRY SCHOLARSHIP Since our inception in 1988, the Plainfield Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has conducted educational and mentorship programs aimed at developing the academic, leadership, character, and social skills in our youth, which enables them to succeed in life; and being socially responsible where public entities have left them alone in the areas of social interaction for our under-served Middlesex, Union and Somerset County communities. The Plainfield Alumni Kappa League program was designed to help young men grow, receive and develop their leadership talents in every phase pf human endeavor. We provide both challenging and rewarding experiences, which richly enhanced their lives. Today our program salutes two of our participants who are graduating from Colonia high school and moving on to the next level with our Edward Perry Scholarship. 29. *LEE VETLAND MEMORIAL FUND SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2019 in memory of Lee Vetland. Lee was a life-long resident of Avenel and Colonia. He attended Woodbridge High School before owning and operating Lee's Auto Body and Pine Top Service in Avenel for over 50 years. Through hard work and dedication, he grew his business from a dream and turned it into what it is today. Lee had a huge heart and spent a lifetime giving back to the community and helping others, so it is an honor to give this scholarship in his name. The Lee Vetland Memorial Fund will award a scholarship to a Colonia High School student who has an interest in automobiles and/or is enrolling in an automotive program after graduation. This student exemplifies the qualities of Lee Vetland; among them his kind and gregarious spirit, willingness to always help others in need, and love of the community. 31. *THE MANUEL ALMEIDA SR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented in memory of Manuel Almeida Sr. who worked for the Woodbridge Board of Education for 39 years, and was a lifelong resident of Colonia. 34. THE BRONCOS AND CHEERLEADING AWARD is presented to a Colonia High School Varsity football player and cheerleader who participated in the Iselin Giants or Colonia Patriots Pop Warner program. The individuals chosen exemplify the strength in character and positive attitude both on and off the playing field that are representative of the ideals and values of their former organization. 35. *THE EDWARD C. CHMIELEWSKI MEMORIAL AWARD is presented to a senior player who exemplifies the qualities possessed by Edward C. Chmielewski. Among these qualities are: pride, dedication, and a genuine enthusiasm for the game. Mrs. Chmielewski was a faculty member who retired in 2002 after 21 years. They were both avid basketball fans. 36. THE JOSEPH GAWRONSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented by the Gawronski Family Foundation to a scholar athlete who is attending college in the fall. The recipient demonstrates high academic achievement and must be a member of the basketball, softball or team. Presenter: Mrs. Andrea Simkovich Recipient:

37. THE RICHARD SULLIVAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a graduating senior of Irish descent who is attending college in the fall. The recipient of this award has a parent or grandparent who is a veteran. Presenter: Mrs. Andrea Simkovich Recipient:

38. *THE KEVIN J. EVANKO MEMORIAL SCHOLAR ATHLETE AWARD is presented to a football lineman, football player or another athlete who possesses the exemplary qualities of Kevin Evanko, Class of 1972. The recipient is a student who demonstrates high athletic and scholastic ability, embraces a philosophy where "limitations" are non-existent, "challenges" are routinely overcome, and "dreams" are realized daily; sacrifices to attain personal goals, and acts as a leader and positive role model, sharing with others a "winning attitude" and inspiring them to always achieve their personal best. 39. *THE ERIC LeGRAND COURAGE AWARD To be a scholar-athlete requires hard work, dedication and sacrifice. This scholarship exemplifies these characteristics of Colonia football and, most importantly, the courage it takes to play a sport which requires a person to face difficulty, danger and pain without fear. Eric LeGrand faced these dangers and pain without fear. He did this with love for his teammates, coaches and the great game of football. 40. *THE CARY HAMRAH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a scholar-athlete who best exemplifies the characteristics and qualities of this outstanding individual - teacher, guidance counselor and coach. The personal qualities include enthusiasm, dedication, loyalty, a sense of humor, and a genuine concern for the welfare of others. This student has a satisfactory rank in class, has earned at least two Varsity letters, and is active in the community. 41. *THE ROBERT A. GRANRATH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a graduating senior who has achieved an A- or higher in his/her Accounting/Business classes. 42. *THE ANTOINETTE RYAN MEMORIAL AWARD is presented in memory of Mrs. Antoinette Ryan, a former nursing arts teacher at Colonia High School. 43. *THE GRACE HAWRYLKO SCHOLARSHIPS Grace Hawrylko, a resident of Woodbridge Township, provided for an endowment to the Woodbridge Township School District. This endowment establishes a college scholarship fund to be distributed annually in support of high school seniors who have excelled academically in the sciences and wish to pursue a career in the biological or medical sciences. 44. *THE LOTTA GRASTY MEMORIAL/AUXILIARY OF THE JFK MEDICAL CENTER FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP in memory of Lotta Grasty, is presented by the Auxiliary of the John F. 45. *THE JOEL AND JENNIFER RITZ SCHOLARSHIP AWARD is given annually to one graduating student of Colonia High School who previously attended Indiana Avenue School #18. O’MALLEY – CENTRAL JERSEY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP In recognition of and to honor his service and dedication to the Central Jersey Federal Credit Union, this scholarship is given by Central Jersey FCU to a college bound student in good standing who plans to major in education. 59. *THE LIGHTBRIDGE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARD is presented to a student who wishes to pursue post-secondary studies in early childhood education and adheres to the Lightbridge Academy "Circle of Care" Philosophy…..caring, happiness, integrity, leadership, consistency, recognizes the efforts of others, and is nurturing and supportive. 60. *THE HELEN RACANO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – “CELEBRATING A LEGACY OF LOVE” is presented in loving memory of Helen Racano, an Italian instructor for the Woodbridge Township Enrichment Program, fulfilling her sincere desire to become a teacher. This scholarship is awarded to a student, matriculated from Colonia Middle School, whose goal is to continue his/her education and ultimately enter the teaching profession. Through this scholarship, the recipient must demonstrate the mission of the Leo Buscaglia Foundation, which Helen admired and reflected throughout her own life – always sharing and giving and influencing others to do the same. THE LINDA SQUILLACE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD This award is presented by the Woodbridge Township Domestic Violence Response Team to a senior who possesses leadership qualities and is willing to serve above and beyond the call of duty. This individual plans to further their education at a vocational school, technical school or college. The recipient wrote an essay on the following topic: “Does the current pandemic environment have an impact on Domestic Violence? 65. *THE CHRISTOPHER JOHN O'BRIEN CHARACTER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD is presented in memory of Christopher O'Brien, a 1981 graduate of Colonia High School. Chris was fun, easy-going, generous, and a man of deep Christian faith. He played both varsity football and basketball here at Colonia High School. He was an avid outdoorsman - he loved to fish, hunt, and golf. He enjoyed the camaraderie of many friends, was an optimist, and always believed in giving people the benefit of the doubt. He made friends easily, getting along with a wide range of people at a young age. Chris was married with a wonderful supportive wife and three beautiful children. He went on to be successful State Farm agent, enjoying helping out families and providing honest and valuable insurance advice. He was the favorite uncle to 30 nieces and nephews - always the one to give a good night story at the many family get-togethers. The Christopher O’Brien scholarship is given to a student at CHS who has demonstrated some of Chris's characteristics - a well-rounded, generous, forgiving, thoughtful, and trusting friend.
