From the Women’s Tournament Diector Michelle Fox

Welcome to a new season of USAV Volleyball! I hope you are all excited to get out on the court and play. As always, it is my goal to keep the competition within the women's brackets as fair and even as possible. That will even be more critical with the new rally scoring system that we will be using this season, where all matches will be rally scoring games to 25 points.

There are already many tournaments listed on the schedule, with plenty of opportunities to play for teams at all levels. If you are interested in hosting a tournament, please contact me. See the Adult Tournament Packet which is posted on the OVR web site for information on what is involved in running a tournament. If you have access to a gym, you can run a tournament!

Dexter Chiropractic After four years of playing at the US Open Championships, Dexter Chiropractic finally By Denise La Monte came home with a medal. Dexter finished second in the Women’s BB Silver Division. 41 teams traveled to San Jose, CA to compete in the Women’s BB division at the end of May. In pool play Dexter defeated Sugargliders from Sugarland, TX; Tigers from Rochester, NY; and Latitude Attitude from Laguna Beach, CA. Dexter lost to Downstate VBC of Chappaqua, NY; Harborside of Boston, MA and Set to Kill of Springfield, MO. Dexter was part of a three-way tie for third place but finished 5th in pool play after the tiebreakers were calculated. The top three teams of each pool went to the Gold Division, the next three to the Silver Division and the last two from each pool to the Bronze Division. Dexter went undefeated going in to the finals of the Silver Division by beating Wicked Wahines of RVC from Richmond, VA (15-4, 15-8), Nucombers from Sykesville, MD (15-8, 15-13), Kungaloosh from North Providence, RI (15-9, 15-8) and MIT Women’s Volleyball from Cambridge, MA (17-15, 15-12). In the finals lost to UREZ of Chicago, IL (9-15, 6-15) and fell in the deciding game 14-16. Once again we had a great time and would like to thank the Ohio Valley Region for their continued support. We’d like to send special thanks to Emi Vishoot for checking in on us and cheering for us when she was “allowed.” We’d also like to thank Terry Pictured: Denise LaMonte, Terri Turner, Melinda Miller and Steve DiBacco and the rest of the Ohio Valley teams for coming over to Lasure, Chana Tepe, Katherine Tome, Kim Antill watch us play and cheer us on. Not pictured: Christie Hughes Congratulations to the rest of the Ohio Valley teams who made the trip! We’re looking forward to Nationals in 2000 in Columbus! No Touch - Men’s A

Shawn Spencer - Men's A Team, No Touch: This was our team's third trip to the national championships and every year it continues to be an exciting and challenging event. The level of play was certainly outstanding this year at San Jose and we were pleased to finish first in our opening pool with a 2-1 record. This qualified us to compete for the championship in the Gold Division. Although our matches were close and we had opportunities to advance, we finished with only one win and two losses in our playoff pool and finished ninth place in our division.

Miami Valley Masters 50’s Rick Laskey

Seeded 4th in our 6-team pool, we faced such powerhouses as Outrigger (who were seeded 5th in our pool, but eventually won the Gold Division!), Kings Mountain Fog, and Roof. We finished in 6th place in our pool and 23rd overall, putting us in the Silver Bracket. Losing to Six Pack in the first round put us in the losers' bracket where we struggled back defeating Down East and Facedig before meeting up with Six Pack again, who proceed- ing to put us out of the tournament.

Playing with the Miami Valley Masters in San Jose were: setters Rick Laskey (Xenia, OH) and Jacque Henes (Dayton, OH), Kneeling, left to right: 52-Terri Miller, 1-Rick Laskey, middle hitters Terry Miller (Dayton, OH) and Lyman Johnson Manager-Emi Vishoot, 4-Steve Crane Standing, left to (Conshohocken, PA), and outside hitters Steven DiBacco (Huber right: 17-Steve DiBacco, 5-John Newman, 8-Tom Fulton, Heights, OH), Tom Fulton (Troy, OH), John "Newmo" Newman (Kent, OH), and C.L. The Back Page - Guest Commentary

As we move into the year 2000 we are confronted by a dizzying array of changes in all aspects of life. Beginning with the 2000 season we will have all rally point games for matches at all levels of play in Juniors and adults. This will bring a great deal of grumbling about how this will affect the game on both the play and officiating side. Coaches and players will say it will make all teams less aggressive. If you teach your players to play every point the same and not pay attention to the score, there is no reason to get tentative.

Officials have to learn a new combination of signals, which is a different sequence than at either the high school or college level. The reasoning behind the changes are many including bringing us up to the level of the International game. The changes in signaling are for the spectator’s advantage, as they will know who gets the ball, and then what the fault is. Also, with rally scoring, tournament direc- tors will better be able to predict the timing of their matches. This will allow the use of facilities that perhaps are only open until 6 p.m. because of leagues or other reasons. Because of this, we should see more facilities being used for volleyball and as a result more opportunities for both juniors and adults to play.

Now more than ever, the scorekeeping at the junior level must be improved to facilitate matches. Coaches should remain at the score’s table with their kids when it is their turn to provide the referee support. Emphasis on scoring will be much higher this year during all officiating clinics. Please help make the 2000 season an enjoyable one. Let’s embrace the changes and help grow the game.
