There is also a collection of published books, both Barry Hines’ own works and material collected for research purposes. Barry Hines was born in the mining village of Hoyland Common near Barnsley on 30th June 1939, and attended Ecclesfield Grammar School. One of his proudest moments was playing for the England Secondary Schools football team in 1957. He worked for the National Coal Board as an apprentice mining engineer, but returned to education, eventually gaining a teaching qualification at Loughborough University. He worked as a Physical Education teacher for several years, first in London and then in Hoyland Common, eventually leaving to become a full-time writer. His best known work is the novel A Kestrel for a Knave, which was made into the film Kes, directed by Ken Loach. It is the story of Billy Casper, a young boy from a mining village who cared for a kestrel. Other notable works include the film Looks and Smiles, also directed by Ken Loach, which won the Best Contemporary Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1981, and the television film Threads, about Sheffield during and after a nuclear war, which won a special award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in 1985 as well as the Broadcasting Press Guild Award and seven BAFTA nominations. The collection includes drafts for many other works, both published/produced such as The Gamekeeper, The Heart of It and The Price of Coal, and unpublished such as After the Strike, Slate and Tom Kite. Barry Hines was Yorkshire Arts Fellow in Creative Writing at the University of Sheffield from 1972 to 1974, and became an Honorary Doctor of Letters in 2010. Barry Hines died in March 2016. • Barry Hines Has Observed: ‘My Political Viewpoint Is the Mainspring of My Work
Barry Hines has observed: ‘My political viewpoint is the mainspring of my work. It fuels my energy’ (2009: v). Such a comment will not surprise readers of Hines’ novel A Kestrel for a Knave and viewers of its film version Kes (1969). This was the first of many films written by Hines and directed by Ken Loach which include The Price of Coal (BBC, 1977), The Gamekeeper (ATV, 1980) and the feature film Looks and Smiles (1981). Among Hines' other works areThreads (BBC, 1984), his television film about a nuclear strike against Britain, as well as the BBC Plays for TodayBilly's Last Stand (1971), about the coal industry, and Speech Day (1973), about school-leavers. Given this preoccupation with politics as they affect everyday life, and the fact that all of Hines' work is set in his native South Yorkshire among its working-class communities, it seems surprising that none of these plays is about the miners' strike of 1984–5. The Price of Coal, a pair of Plays for Today, is set in 1977; with hindsight it is fittingly prophetic that in the first play, Meet the People, the daubing of Arthur Scargill's name on a wall threatens to disrupt preparations for an impending royal visit to Milton Colliery. The lock-outs and state-sponsored violence against people clamouring for food after the nuclear attack in Threads also appear prescient since the script was completed before the miners' strike began. However, exploration of the unproduced plays collected in Hines' archive reveals that the 1984–5 strike remained a political and dramatic preoccupation of the playwright for over twenty years.

  • Beyond the Dark, Satanic Mills an Ecocritical Reading of a Kestrel for a Knave
Through the Working Class Ecology and Society Investigated Through the Lens of Labour edited by Silvio Cristiano Beyond the Dark, Satanic Mills An Ecocritical Reading of A Kestrel for a Knave Joanna Dobson (Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield, UK) Abstract Barry Hines’ 1968 novel A Kestrel for a Knave is justly celebrated for its depiction of work- ing-class life in an English mining village. However, false assumptions about the role of ‘nature’ in the working-class experience have led critics to overlook the significance of the bird at the centre of the novel and the descriptions of the surrounding environment. A reading that foregrounds these aspects offers new insights, revealing a prescient anxiety about the way capitalism weakens relationships between human and nonhuman. The book is shown to be ahead of its time in its understanding that human flourishing depends on meaningful connection with the more-than-human world. Keywords Animal studies. Barry Hines. Birds. Ecocriticism. Northern England. Working-class writing. Barry Hines’ much-loved 1968 novel A Kestrel for a Knave tells the story of Billy Casper, a young teenager growing up in a coal mining village in South Yorkshire, and his relationship with a kestrel called Kes. In an af- terword to the Penguin Modern Classics edition of the book, Hines writes that one of the questions he is most frequently asked is how he knows so much about the countryside, since he too grew up in a mining community in the north of England. He goes on: It’s an ignorant question but understandable, because many people still have a vision of the north filled with ‘dark satanic mills’, mines and fac- tories, and not a blade of grass in sight.

  • Dennis Potter: an Unconventional Dramatist
Dennis Potter: An Unconventional Dramatist Dennis Potter (1935–1994), graduate of New College, was one of the most innovative and influential television dramatists of the twentieth century, known for works such as single plays Son of Man (1969), Brimstone and Treacle (1976) and Blue Remembered Hills (1979), and serials Pennies from Heaven (1978), The Singing Detective (1986) and Blackeyes (1989). Often controversial, he pioneered non-naturalistic techniques of drama presentation and explored themes which were to recur throughout his work. I. Early Life and Background He was born Dennis Christopher George Potter in Berry Hill in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire on 17 May 1935, the son of a coal miner. He would later describe the area as quite isolated from everywhere else (‘even Wales’).1 As a child he was an unusually bright pupil at the village primary school (which actually features as a location in ‘Pennies From Heaven’) as well as a strict attender of the local chapel (‘Up the hill . usually on a Sunday, sometimes three times to Salem Chapel . .’).2 Even at a young age he was writing: I knew that the words were chariots in some way. I didn’t know where it was going … but it was so inevitable … I cannot think of the time really when I wasn’t [a writer].3 The language of the Bible, the images it created, resonated with him; he described how the local area ‘became’ places from the Bible: Cannop Ponds by the pit where Dad worked, I knew that was where Jesus walked on the water … the Valley of the Shadow of Death was that lane where the overhanging trees were.4 I always fall back into biblical language, but that’s … part of my heritage, which I in a sense am grateful for.5 He was also a ‘physically cowardly’6 and ‘cripplingly shy’7 child who felt different from the other children at school, a feeling heightened by his being academically more advanced.
