The Visualization of the Twisted Tongue: Portrayals of Stuttering in Film, Television, and Comic Books JEFFREY K. JOHNSON HERE IS A WELL-ESTABLISHED TRADITION WITHIN THE ENTERTAINMENT and publishing industries of depicting mentally and physically challenged characters. While many of the early renderings were sideshowesque amusements or one-dimensional melodramas, numerous contemporary works have utilized characters with disabilities in well- rounded and nonstereotypical ways. Although it would appear that many in society have begun to demand more realistic portrayals of characters with physical and mental challenges, one impediment that is still often typified by coarse caricatures is that of stuttering. The speech impediment labeled stuttering is often used as a crude formulaic storytelling device that adheres to basic misconceptions about the condition. Stuttering is frequently used as visual shorthand to communicate humor, nervousness, weakness, or unheroic/villainous characters. Because almost all the monographs written about the por- trayals of disabilities in film and television fail to mention stuttering, the purpose of this article is to examine the basic categorical formulas used in depicting stuttering in the mainstream popular culture areas of film, television, and comic books.' Though the subject may seem minor or unimportant, it does in fact provide an outlet to observe the relationship between a physical condition and the popular conception of the mental and personality traits that accompany it. One widely accepted definition of stuttering is, "the interruption of the flow of speech by hesitations, prolongation of sounds and blockages sufficient to cause anxiety and impair verbal communication" (Carlisle 4). Alien: Covenant
ALIEN: COVENANT In space, no one can hear you scream. After nearly four decades, those words remain synonymous with the sheer, relentless intensity of Ridley Scott’s masterpiece of futuristic horror, Alien. Now, the father of the iconic franchise returns once more to the world he created to explore its darkest corners with ALIEN: COVENANT, a pulse-pounding new adventure that pushes the boundaries of R-rated terror. All is quiet aboard the spaceship Covenant. The crew and the rest of the 2,000 souls aboard the pioneering vessel are deep in hyper-sleep, leaving the synthetic Walter to walk the corridors alone. The movie may feel a bit old-fashioned and measured in some respects, but it is a well-acted and beautifully shot feature that displays some scenic natural locations. The Martian – Intrattenimento Allo Stato Puro
The Martian – Intrattenimento allo stato puro (Fonte foto: cdn.laopinion.com) “The Martian – Sopravvissuto” è il nuovo film diRidley Scott, oramai un cultore del genere fantascientifico da tantissimi anni, avendo regalato al mondo capolavori quali “Alien” e “Blade Runner“. Il cast annovera tra le sue fila Matt Damon e Jessica Chastain, richiamando alla memoria “Interstellar“, uscito ormai un anno fa, dove per l’appunto recitavano i due protagonisti di “The Martian”. E’ impossibile analizzare il film senza compiere un paragone tra lo stesso “Interstellar” e “The Martian”, due film così simili eppure distanti anni luce. Ho sentito molte persone criticare la ripetitività delle due pellicole, a mio avviso, senza motivo. Questo perché considero “Interstellar” un film molto più impegnato e con un significato ben più profondo di “The Martian”, che è semplicemente una storia molto interessante, con effetti scenici incredibili ed estremamente realistici, senza entrare però in significati celati e/o filosofici (l’intero “Interstellar” è più un trattato filosofico che un film a tutti gli effetti). Questo non significa che “The Martian” sia inferiore ad “Interstellar”, è semplicemente estremamente diverso. E’ la storia di un uomo che fa di tutto per sopravvivere, è un inno alla vita, alla volontà primaria dell’uomo di vivere a tutti i costi, aggrappandosi con le unghie alla cosa più importante che abbiamo, la vita stessa. Il tutto condito da una vena d’ironia che si inserisce perfettamente nel contesto principale del film. E’ inoltre un film estremamenterealistico, per il quale sarebbe più corretto parlare di scienza che di fantascienza. L’intero script è stato revisionato più volte dalla NASA (la quale è ben presente nel film, come si può facilmente denotare) per donargli una verosimiglianza elevata. -
