Dreamgirls, the second in the series, will blow down the doors on Thursday, February 11, 2021. Admission is $3 per person, and the movie will begin at 7 p.m. Please note that only 100 seats are available, to allow for social distancing in the 530-seat Birdsong Theater; masks are required. To purchase tickets, please contact the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts box office at 757.923.2900, or visit www.SuffolkCenter.org. Dreamgirls is a 2006 American musical drama film based on the stage musical. In early 1960s Detroit, Curtis Taylor, Jr. signs an R&B trio of young women, the Dreamettes, and takes them from backup singers to headliners, all while establishing his own record label and indulging in wheeling and dealing. Personal struggles reign as plus-sized, big-voiced lead singer Effie is phased out to allow softer-voiced looker Deena Jones to front the trio. How long will Curtis keep Deena and the Dreams at the top, and will Effie ever get her due? With an all-star cast that includes Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, Anika Noni Rose, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, and Danny Glover, this film is 130 minutes and rated PG-13. The series will conclude with The Phantom of the Opera on March 11th. For more information, please contact the Suffolk Visitor Center at 757-514-4130, or log onto www.VisitSuffolkVa.com. ###.

Dabney, Melina Kristine (BA/MA Film Studies) Re-mixing Old Character Tropes on Screen: Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and the New Femininity Thesis directed by Professor Melinda Barlow While there is a substantial amount of scholarship on the depiction of African American women in film and television, this thesis exposes the new formations of African American femininity on screen. African American women have consistently resisted, challenged, submitted to, and remixed racial myths and sexual stereotypes existing in American cinema and television programming. Mainstream film and television practices significantly contribute to the reinforcement of old stereotypes in contemporary black women characters. However, based on the efforts of African American producers like Shonda Rhimes, who has attempted to insert more realistic renderings of African American women in her recent television shows, black women’s representation is undergoing yet another shift in contemporary media.

  • Once Upon a Time … in Santa Clarita: Tarantino Movie Opens Thursday
By: Caleb Lunetta, July 25, 2019 Once Upon a Time … In Santa Clarita: Tarantino movie opens Thursday Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino is known for his genre-defying blockbuster films that combine elements of art house, violence and comedy in his Academy Award-winning films. And the San Fernando Valley resident calls Santa Clarita “a special place,” according to local film property owners who have played host to the luminary for his latest film that debuts tonight, “Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood.” The latest installment in the Tarantino filmography follows the story of “a faded television actor and his stunt double (who) strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles,” according to IMDb.com. The film features Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. Tarantino and movie fans were given a teaser trailer where the opening shot was that of Melody Ranch’s “Main Street” set. Veluzat said that the production team had been working with the studio for a couple months, from planning to setting up to filming, and for him, it was a special experience. Tarantino has filmed two of his last three movies at Melody Ranch in Newhall, according to studio manager Daniel Veluzat, and he’s praised the SCV in interviews and conversations with local residents. He really does like it here, said Veluzat, in reference to a question about why Tarantino has filmed his movies at Melody Ranch. “He calls it a special place,” he said. And on Thursday night, “Once Upon a Time” opens in theaters across the country, including the Santa Clarita Valley, featuring scenes shot at both Melody Ranch and the Saugus Speedway.
