The Bilbao Estuary, 1914-1935
Working Papers in Economic History May 2011 WP 11-04 Hunger in Hell’s Kitchen. Family Living Conditions during Spanish Industrialization. The Bilbao Estuary, 1914-1935. Juan Carlos Rojo Cagigal and Stefan Houpt Abstract Did the late industrialization in Europe’s periphery improve life for its urban class? This paper examines family living conditions in northern Spain during late industrialization in the interwar period. We concentrate on the Basque region, one of the emerging industrial areas from the 1870s on. Historiography holds that in the medium-term urban development and industrialization increased real wages and overall standards of living. We contrast this empirically by examining the effects of income shocks on families using high frequency data from 1914 until 1936. These contrasts introduce nutritional adequacy of family diets as an additional way of measuring living conditions. Our results indicate that real income did not improve and that demographic and social deprivation variables were highly responsive to short term economic shocks. This response points to the fragility of urban breadwinner families even during later phases of industrialization; the urban penalty was by far not being compensated by the higher nominal wages received. Keywords: standards of living, Spain, urbanization, industrialization, family, deprivation, mortality, real wages, interwar period JEL Classification: N34, N93 Juan Carlos Rojo Cagigal: Department of Economic History and Institutions and Figuerola Institute, University Carlos III of Madrid, C/Madrid 126, 28903 Getafe, Spain. Introduction The statistical operation on Marriages provides information on marriages that affects residents in the Basque Country. The files for the Estatistic on Marriages constitute a product for circulation that targets users with experience in analyzing and processing microdata. This format provides an added value to the user, permitting him or her to carry out data exploitation and analysis that, for obvious limitations, cannot be covered by current circulation in the form of tables, publications and reports. The microdata file corresponding to Marriages is described in this report. The circulation of the Marriages file with data from the first spouse combined with information on the second spouse is carried out on the basis of the usefulness and quality of the information that is going to be included as well as the interest for the user, because it is more beneficial for the person receiving the data to be able to work with them in a combined form. -
Basque Soccer Madness a Dissertation Submitted in Partial
University of Nevada, Reno Sport, Nation, Gender: Basque Soccer Madness A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Basque Studies (Anthropology) by Mariann Vaczi Dr. Joseba Zulaika/Dissertation Advisor May, 2013 Copyright by Mariann Vaczi All Rights Reserved THE GRADUATE SCHOOL We recommend that the dissertation prepared under our supervision by Mariann Vaczi entitled Sport, Nation, Gender: Basque Soccer Madness be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Joseba Zulaika, Advisor Sandra Ott, Committee Member Pello Salaburu, Committee Member Robert Winzeler, Committee Member Eleanor Nevins, Graduate School Representative Marsha H. Read, Ph. D., Dean, Graduate School May, 2013 i Abstract A centenarian Basque soccer club, Athletic Club (Bilbao) is the ethnographic locus of this dissertation. From a center of the Industrial Revolution, a major European port of capitalism and the birthplace of Basque nationalism and political violence, Bilbao turned into a post-Fordist paradigm of globalization and gentrification. Beyond traditional axes of identification that create social divisions, what unites Basques in Bizkaia province is a soccer team with a philosophy unique in the world of professional sports: Athletic only recruits local Basque players. Playing local becomes an important source of subjectivization and collective identity in one of the best soccer leagues (Spanish) of the most globalized game of the world. This dissertation takes soccer for a cultural performance that reveals relevant anthropological and sociological information about Bilbao, the province of Bizkaia, and the Basques. Early in the twentieth century, soccer was established as the hegemonic sports culture in Spain and in the Basque Country; it has become a multi- billion business, and it serves as a powerful political apparatus and symbolic capital. -

Biological Welfare During the Economic Development of the Basque Country: Biscay, 1850-2000*
Biological Welfare During the Economic Development of the Basque Country: Biscay, 1850-2000* • PEDRO M. PÉREZ-CASTROVIEJO University of the Basque Country Introduction From the 1880s, the industrialisation of the Cantabrian Coast (Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias) and particularly the province of Biscay form a remarkable part of the Spanish industrialisation process.1 From the mid-nineteenth century, northern Spain had been immersed in an industrial- isation process which had begun in the eighteenth century with the iron and steel sector, arms manufacturing, naval construction and other traditional in- dustries. At the same time, a trading bourgeoisie emerged among the interna- tional markets which, with new capital and technical knowledge, initiated a tentative industrial stage after the First Carlist War (1833-1840). This process was principally led by the Lordship of Biscay, and gained momentum after the Third Carlist War (1872-1876). The most notable sectors were mining, iron and steel, and ship building. From the end of the 1870s, the Basque Country constituted one of the Spanish regions with the greatest economic growth. Between 1900 and 1930, in relative terms, the region stood out for its standard of living, its wealth and economic prosperity, measured by income per capita and the principle welfare standards, of which its human capital ac- cumulation (education and health) was particularly outstanding. The highest * This paper forms part of the framework of the research projects HAR2013-47182-C2- 2-P, HAR2010-20684-C02-02 (MINECO) and IT807-13 (Research Groups of the Basque Uni- versity System). 1. Over the last 30 years the bibliography corresponding to the industrialisation of Bis- cay has been extensive.
