1 Descendants of Nichol Gass
Descendants of Nichol Gass (1801 – Apr 1878) And Jean Copeland (1803 – 1872) First Generation ************************************************** 1. Nichol Gass. Born 1801 in Scotland. Died Apr 1878 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer. Religion Presbyterian. The surname is spelled "Goss" in some areas of the province, but in the Harvey area it is "Gass". Unknown exact date when Nichol Gass and his wife Jean Copeland came to Harvey, they are not in the 1851 Census but are in the 1861 Census. In the 1861 Census Nichol was 60 years old, farmer, Presbyterian, and born in Scotland; and Jean was 58 years old, born in Scotland. No documented proof of number of children, but they are listed as believed to be. (More research needs to be done to confirm.) From the Chignecto Post, Sackville, NB, 25 Apr 1878: "While Nicholas Gass of Manners Sutton was driving a boar pig into his pen, the other day he was turned upon by the ferocious animal which bit him, inflicting a wound from which he bled to death in a few minutes." (Note: The gravestone in Harvey Settlement Cemetery gives Nichol's death year as 1871, and possibly the gravestone was placed in the cemetery at a later date and the correct death date was perhaps 1878.) He married Jean Copeland. Born 1803 in Scotland. Died 1872 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Religion Presbyterian. They had the following children: 2 i. Thomas Gass 3 ii. Joseph Gass 4 iii. Jane Gass 5 iv. Janet Gass 6 v. Isabella Editha Gass Second Generation ************************************************** 2. -

Crown copyright Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS). Jewish heritage in Scotland sharman kadish The Referendum on Scottish independence in September 2014 and the sweeping gains made by the Scottish National Party in the General Election in May 2015 provided pause for thought about the relationship between the Jewish communities that live in the five territories that make up the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. On the level of semantics, we must now studiously avoid using the term “Anglo”- Jewry with reference to British Jewry because the pundits consider it outdated.1 Popular usage of the term Anglo-Jewry persists, as a glance at the Wikipedia entry on “British Jews” shows. (I leave aside the whole 1 See Nathan Abrams, Caledonian Jews: A Study of Seven Small Communities in Scotland (Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 2009), Introduction. Jewish Historical Studies, volume 47, 2015 179 180 sharman kadish debate about the reality of the “Jewish community” as opposed to a series of “communities” as beyond the scope of this investigation.) American Jews also use the term “Anglo-Jewish” to refer to themselves in the sense of “English-speaking”, while Jews from English-speaking countries who have settled in Israel call themselves “Anglos” or even “Anglo-Saxim”. Perhaps “British” Jewry should also be avoided, not least because it no longer includes “Irish” Jewry, that is the Jewish community living south of the Republican border. -

The Glasgow TCommonwealth Games was the starting gun that sounded Scotland’s stage-left appearance onto the world stage, with people from lands far and wide flocking to our nation to see what we had to offer, and they weren’t disappointed. For two weeks our country became an international hotspot – the perfect storm of contrasting cultures and integrating nationalities. Our city’s experience during this time can only truly be illustrated through one encounter I had during the Games: I was enjoying a nice walk through a particularly rainy Glasgow Green, before finding myself face-to-face with an athlete from the Malawian team: half- draped in his own country’s flag and clearly plied plenty with some of our country’s good whiskey, he was belting out “Scotland the Brave” at the top of his lungs, whilst also managing to take some selfies with the locals. -

Education in Scotland
EDUCATION IN SCOTLAND Education in Scotland is markedly different from that in the rest of the United Kingdom - with a different curriculum, school boards to oversee school management and a General Teaching Council which has been in existence since 1965. Whilst there are many examples of successful and innovative practice in Scotland, the system is quite often not recognised as different by writers who talk about the United Kingdom education system as if it were one smooth whole. This book describes recent developments in both legislation and practice in Scotland, drawing comparisons with the English system. Chapters cover adminis tration and management, early years education provision, the curriculum in Scotland, secondary education and special educa - tional needs. Margaret Clark is Emeritus Professor of Education at the Uni versity of Birmingham. Pamela Munn is Professor of Curriculum Research at Moray House Institute of Education, Edinburgh. Not that it is a full record as the time is far past. The pioneers have all gone to their reward and there are only a few now in life who were the boys and girls of the pioneer days. The writer stands, as it were, between two generations, having known all the pioneers, also the young genera- tion. In order that the trials and hardships of the pioneer days may not be entirely lost and forgotten, it is my desire to hand down to the young people the story of their ancestors that they may better understand how they came into possession of the privileges and bless- ings they now enjoy. -
