Film Noir RESEARCH PAPER TOPICS FILM 160 Spring 2009 Film Genres | Film Noir RESEARCH PAPER TOPICS Your assignment is to write a 10-page (3,000 word) research paper on one of the topics listed below. Your paper should combine close cinematic analysis, original arguments and outside research relevant to your topic. Your research must draw from at least 4 sources not contained in the course readings; please use proper citation format when quoting or paraphrasing information from these sources. You must write on at least one film or media text not screened in class; please do not write again on the film you chose for your sequence analysis assignment. 1. Re-Makes: Compare and contrast a classic noir with its more recent re-make. How is similar material adapted differently in different contexts? What historical and cultural factors might account for these changes? Some possible pairings: The Big Clock and No Way Out; Criss Cross and The Underneath; both versions of D.O.A. or The Postman Always Rings Twice; Reckless Moment and The Deep End. 2. Femme fatales: Compare and contrast a classic femme fatale (Criss Cross or The Lady From Shanghai) with one of her more recent cousins in Bound, The Last Seduction or Devil in a Blue Dress. How do contemporary femmes fatales differ from the classic versions? What factors might account for these changes? 3. Marlowe: Compare and contrast Raymond Chandler’s character Philip Marlowe in two or three of his different cinematic incarnations: The Big Sleep, Lady in the Lake, Marlowe, Murder, My Sweet, and/or The Long Goodbye. How and why does Chandler’s character change in different periods and contexts? 4. Hard-Boiled source material: Compare and contrast a “hard-boiled” novel with its filmic counterpart. How was the adaptation produced? What difficulties, if any, were encountered during the adaptation? How do the two versions differ? Some possible pairings: The Grifters (Thompson/Frears); The Maltese Falcon (Hammet/Houston); The Lady in the Lake (Chandler/Montgomery); The Postman Always Rings Twice (Cain/Garnett). 5. International post-war noir: Investigate the re-working of film noir conventions other cultural and historical contexts, such as post-WW II Italy (Ossessione) or post-WW II Japan (Stray Dog) or the French New Wave (Le doulos, Le samourai, Bob le flambeur, Breathless, Shoot the Piano Player, Bande apart? 6. 1970s Noir Revival: Investigate the 1970s revival of film noir in the US. What aspects of film noir did 70s critics and filmmakers admire? How were its themes relevant again in post- Watergate America? How do films like Chinatown and Night Moves compare to classic noir? 7. Noir TV: How are elements from film noir incorporated into (and transformed by) television? Programs to consider include classics like Peter Gunn and more recent series like Veronica Mars. 8. Noir Parody: What happens to noir conventions when they are parodied in more recent films like Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, Who Frame Roger Rabbit? and/or Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang? You may also pursue a topic of your own choice, but you must get advance approval from Prof. Stamp. The 1980s saw cinematic justice exacted by muscle and firepower; today it is pursued with science and brainpower—or what Agatha Christie’s sleuth Hercule Poirot called using “the little grey cells.” In the mid-1980s, William Petersen starred as detective Will Graham in Manhunter (Mann 1986), the first film adaptation of Thomas Harris’s novel Red Dragon (1981), which introduced the world to Dr. Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lector. The film was ahead of its time, bring- ing the criminalist and that which he hunts—the serial killer—to the big screen several years before the genre became pervasive in the mid-1990s. " Philip Marlowe knows that the odds are against him. "See me and you meet the best cops in town, " he muses. "Why despair? Why be lonely? Call Marlowe and watch the wagon come. " The frustration implicit in such name-calling of one's self is, how­ ever, a passing mood. Marlowe knows that he is not so hopeless as all that. Then he started to write crime stories for magazines. His first book, The Big Sleep (1939), was about a private detective, Philip Marlowe. It was a great success, and he wrote about Marlowe in many other books, including Farewell, My Lovely (1940), The High Window (1942), The Lady in the Lake (1944) and The Long Goodbye (1953).

The war in Palestine can be terminated today by granting full equality of its Jewish and non-Jewish residents. Somehow this solution is not even discussed. The author would love to make a celebratory presentation of wonderful achievements of Jews, if it would cause them to embrace their Palestinian neighbours. However, this way was tried and failed spectacularly. In the author’s eyes, the Jewish hubris is the main obstacle to the solution, and that is why these essays are deconstructing Jewishness, trying to undermine all possible reasons for the hubris. This could be painful reading for his Jewish brothers and sisters intoxicated with success and trapped by mantra of Jewish martyrdom. But the Jewish exclusiveness has to be exorcised, in order to integrate Jews into the family of nations.

Heise, Chair Through the analysis of a selection of thrillers written and produced in the years immediately following World War II, this dissertation defines the threshold conditions of narrative suspense in the twentieth century—the pending disappearance of continuity, not just in techniques of storytelling but in longstanding assumptions about time, about how it is and how it ought to be organized. These works, for instance, seem in various ways to prefigure a more general attenuation of narrative retrospection—narrative retrospection as a grammatical convention of realist fiction but also as a form of belief, as fidelity to the qualitative density of human experience as it is transmitted through time. This period of aesthetic transition, marked by the iconoclasm of the avant-garde, is often seen as a terminal point in the history of storytelling after modernism, a time (though certainly not the only time) when the novel dies along with the systems of value that upheld it. Alternately, as more recent scholarship has shown, it can be seen as the moment when the present tense starts to gain traction as the dominant mode of fictionalizing time.

MacDonald Carl Malmgren University of New Orleans, United States Abstract Confronted with the gradual erosion of the once-stable signs of the Story—plot, character, motivation, and truth—Raymond Chandler turns to the other main component of narrative, Discourse, to discover a reliable ground, and finds it in the act of narration itself, the enunciation of the speaking subject. In Chandler’s fiction the detective’s defiant Discourse finally masters the world’s sad Story. As a rule, Marlowe’s enunciation sticks to and rehearses the basic facts of the story. Marlowe does from time to time engage in personal commentary, statements that make reference to his opinions concerning the characters or events of the fictional world, but he very rarely resorts to ideological commentary, sweeping statements about the culture or society he traverses. He shows readers his world; he does not tell them about it. In The Long Goodbye, however, he begins to badger the reader, indulging in ideological commentaries that convert his comments into lectures. In the Travis McGee novels, John D. MacDonald continues this practice, allowing McGee to assume the magisterial privilege of telling readers any number of things, in effect talking them to death. This essay focuses on Chandler’s The Long Goodbye and MacDonald’s A Deadly Shade of Gold to discuss the line of filiation between the two authors. * 1. Story and Discourse in Raymond Chandler “Yes, .
