Returns in Broadway Series ‘Hamilton’ returns in Broadway series Posted by Bob Evans National Tour of HAMILTON RETURNING TO KANSAS CITY DURING 2021-2022 SEASON Producer Jeffrey Seller, Broadway Across America and The American Theatre Guild announced today that the national tour of the Broadway musical HAMILTON will return to Kansas City as part of the 2021-2022 season. The best way to guarantee tickets to HAMILTON is to purchase a season membership for the 2020-2021 season. Season members who renew their membership for the 2021-2022 season will have first access to seats for the return Kansas City engagement of HAMILTON before tickets become available to the general public. More information about the 2020-2021 season is available at BroadwayInKC.com. Information regarding engagement dates and how to purchase groups and single tickets will be announced at a later time. With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical direction and orchestrations Alexby Lacamoire, HAMILTON is based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. HAMILTON is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway, HAMILTON is the story of America then, as told by America now.     Gordon 1 Jessica Gordon 29 March 2010 Honors Thesis Everything was Beautiful at the Ballet: The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance During the mid-1860s, a ballet troupe from Paris was brought to the Academy of Music in lower Manhattan. Before the company’s first performance, however, the theatre in which they were to dance was destroyed in a fire. Nearby, producer William Wheatley was preparing to begin performances of The Black Crook, a melodrama with music by Charles M. Barras. Seeing an opportunity, Wheatley conceived the idea to combine his play and the displaced dance company, mixing drama and spectacle on one stage. On September 12, 1866, The Black Crook opened at Niblo’s Gardens and was an immediate sensation. Wheatley had unknowingly created a new American art form that would become a tradition for years to come. Since the first performance of The Black Crook, dance has played an important role in musical theatre. From the dream ballet in Oklahoma to the “Dance at the Gym” in West Side Story to modern shows such as Movin’ Out, dance has helped tell stories and engage audiences throughout musical theatre history. Dance has not always been as integrated in musicals as it tends to be today. I plan to examine the moments in history during which the role of dance on the Broadway stage changed and how those changes affected the manner in which dance is used on stage today. Additionally, I will discuss the important choreographers who have helped develop the musical theatre dance styles and traditions. As previously mentioned, theatrical dance in America began with the integration of European classical ballet and American melodrama.

    The Club welcomed Broadway producer Jeffrey Seller on Monday, May 7 for the 90th Annual Dinner Meeting celebrated at the Hilton Chicago Hotel. The evening started with retiring board member Jack Hartman presenting the Nominating Committee’s 2018-2019 slate of officers and directors of the Club, which members unanimously accepted. The program began with remarks from Mr. Seller – producer of Hamilton, Rent and Avenue Q, among many other shows– which detailed his career and the business of making musicals. Afterwards, Chair Mellody Hobson moderated a candid discussion that touched on topics including Mr. Seller’s path to Broadway, his process of creation, and future projects. The previous day, Mr. Seller and Lin-Manuel Miranda announced the opening of Hamilton: The Exhibition, a traveling museum that will open in Chicago on Northerly Island in November. It will serve as an immersive exploration of the American Revolution through the perspective of Alexander Hamilton. In Mr. Seller’s eyes, Chicago is the ideal place to launch the museum. “Chicago embodies the intersection of civic stewardship, cultural engagement and capitalism that define American exceptionalism,” he said. “The Herculean efforts of the business and civic leaders that architects who dreamed up and built the Chicago’s World Fair in 1893 exemplified how a city can enrich the lives of citizens through entertainment, education and illumination. “ These kinds of strategic considerations are skills Mr. Seller honed over his 25-year storied career in theater. Given the role he plays in making artistic visions a reality, he emphasized two points. First, that commercial potential is impossible to predict, so he has only brought to stage art that he loves; and second, he is committed to expanding the demographics of Broadway.

    We Finally See Rockwell, Williams in FX's First 'Fosse/Verdon' Trailer 02.25.2019 FX's upcoming eight-episode limited series, Fosse/Verdon, unpacks the turbulent five-decade relationship of legendary Hollywood director and choreographer, Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell), and his wife, muse and star in her own right, Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams). Their relationship starts as a director-star cliche and then evolves into something much more complicated as Fosse fuels his manic creativity with drugs, alcohol and sex. Verdon, meanwhile, reaches the height of her career as a Broadway triple threat and multiple Tony winner but watches Fosse stay in the spotlight as she fades into age and obscurity. Still, she remains his unrecognized collaborator even as their marriage unravels. Eventually, Fosse forges a connection with Ann Reinking (Margaret Qualley), an up-and-coming Broadway dancer who has all the talent and tenacity of a young Verdon.     Welcome It is my pleasure to welcome you to AS YOU LIKE IT, the first production of our 50th anniversary season, and the first show in our Shakespearean act. Shakespeare’s plays have been a cornerstone of our work at CSC, and his writing continues to reflect and refract our triumphs and trials as individuals and collectively as a society. We inevitability turn to Shakespeare to express our despair, bewilderment, and delight. So, what better place to start our anniversary year than with the contemplative search for self and belonging in As You Like It. At the heart of this beautiful play is a speech that so perfectly encapsulates our mortality. All the world’s a stage, and we go through so many changes as we make our exits and our entrances. You will have noticed many changes for CSC. We have a new look, new membership opportunities, and are programming in a new way with more productions and a season that splits into what we have called “acts.” Each act focuses either on a playwright or on an era of work. It seemed appropriate to inaugurate this with a mini-season of Shakespeare, which continues with Fiasco Theater's TWELFTH NIGHT. Then there is Act II: Americans dedicated to work by American playwrights Terrence McNally (FIRE AND AIR) and Tennessee Williams (SUMMER AND SMOKE); very little of our repertoire has focused on classics written by Americans. This act also premieres a new play by Terrence McNally, as I feel that the word classic can also encapsulate the “bigger idea” and need not always be the work of a writer from the past.
