how to implement this frame of agreement into a “real” agreement are expected to be finalised in 2014.

Later in 2013, in November, a friendly meeting between the KC and two members of the General Committee (R. de Santiago and K. Järvinen) was organised, upon invitation of the KC.

A meeting is also planned between the FCI Executive Committee and the AKC and CKC at the latter’s respective headquarters in January 2014 to discuss the mutual benefit of increased cooperation for a positive future for both organisations.

Passion for purebred dogs is at the heart of both the FCI and Eukanuba and in 2013, both organisations negotiated the continuation of their joint efforts with the renewal of their ‘’Partners in Excellence’’ agreement. This remarkably successful collaboration began in 2006, and among its achievements has been the birth and rise of the Eukanuba World Challenge. A new 3-year ‘’Partners in Excellence’’ agreement is planned to be signed in 2014.

The FCI General Committee expressed their warmest thanks to Mr Takemi Nagamura (JP) who sat in the FCI Reaching end of December 2013 and having a close look General Committee as representative of the FCI Asia and Pacific Section for 8 years. Executive Director’s report

Dear Readers,

Year 2013 is now behind us. It was a year of changes: new President, new Executive Committee, new working methods.

Hans Müller (CH), FCI President for 30 years, decided to retire: a well-deserved retirement! I would like to express to him my deepest thanks and respect for all he has done for the FCI, his loyalty to our Federation and his constant willingness to move the FCI forward.

Rafael de Santiago (PR) took over as FCI President; he has already paved a new way towards modern working procedures and greater visibility of the FCI.

2013 Annual report | 15 Executive Director’s report Chapter V

We also welcome back and congratulate Carla Molinari (PT), new General and Executive Committee member. She was appointed Treasurer. Congratulations too to the new FCI Vice-President, Gerard Jipping (NL).

Finally, the FCI Asia and the Pacific Section elected a new President, Augusto Benedicto Santos III (PH), who now sits in the FCI General Committee in replacement of Takemi Nagamura (JP), whom we thank for the excellent job he did during the last 8 years as a member of the FCI General Committee.

Like any modern organisation, the FCI has now its two feet in the Modern Communication Era and has been making an intensive use of its website (http://www.fci.be) and Facebook page.

In addition, all the FCI members and contract partners now have the possibility to consult their accountancy online at any time. The project of consulting the show results online will be implemented early 2014.

The extension works at the FCI Office started in September and should be over end of next year. This is a huge initiative that will allow FCI to host Committee and Commission meetings in its headquarters and greet visitors in a cosy and friendly atmosphere.

In August, a partnership contract was signed with the Armenian Dog Lovers Association. We welcome our Armenian friends in the FCI family!

In October, the FCI launched a huge satisfaction survey as we believe it is essential to be attentive to our members. Approximately 40% of them answered and the conclusions will be examined in the course of 2014.

In December, the FCI President, Rafael de Santiago, announced in Orlando, on the occasion of the Eukanuba World Challenge, the renewal of the cooperation contract between the FCI and Eukanuba for another 3 years. We are very happy to keep our collaboration with our Partner in Excellence.

As always, stability is a key-word for an efficient team and work; the FCI Staff, 13 people, remained unchanged. Mrs Devaux celebrated her 40 years of office in the FCI! Congratulations to her.

It is a pleasure to work in close cooperation with a new team and an efficient staff; I look forward to a more and more prosperous FCI.

Yves De Clercq FCI Executive Director

It is a known fact that a quality illustration (or photograph), when shown to five experts - three will disagree on the quality. Shown to five new experts – and they will disagree with the choice that the first five approved! Like in judging dogs – it is subjective. Hence there is no single solution, but the Commission sincerely hope that the collaboration should result in as typical illustrations as it is ever possible.

FCI COMMISSION FOR SLEDGE DOGS – Activity report

In 2013 the FCI Commission for Sledge Dogs continued The Commission reelected its Board. Mr Franco Mannato its work and met in Copenhague, Denmark on 1-2 June (France) was reelected chairman, Mr Henrik Soeborg 2013. A perfectly well organised meeting thanks to the (Denmark) vice-chairman and Mrs Eveline Koch (Sweden) organisers from Dansk Polar Hunde Klub and the Danish secretary. Kennel Club, D.K.K. During the period under review, the work of the commission focused mainly on the discussion and drafting of recommendations for international guidelines for the tests making dogs eligible to enter the “working class” in dog shows as well as the delivery of CACT to enable dogs to become working champions, on a coherent basis.

Guidelines under preparation take into account the two kinds of tests existing currently, the working test and the racing test. The working test is highly appreciated by all participants, but it only exists in Finland at the moment, while racing tests exist in many countries and need to be harmonised. Most discussions focused on the various problems faced by Member countries and how they try to solve them.

40 | Fédération Cynologique Internationale Chapter VII Our commissions

A revised version of these guidelines will be discussed and possibly approved at the next meeting of the Commission.

Another issue was also mentionned, the fact that show judges in general have little eye for functional dogs. It is the opinion of the commission that show judges should be more educated about the purpose of the breed and see in practice what is written in the standards as these are sled dogs.

The next meeting of the commission is planned to be held on 17th and 18th May 2014 in Bratislava, Slovakia. Immediately after the meeting, all decisions - and possibly the adopted document - will be forwarded to the General Committee for perusal and, whenever possible, adoption.
