The revised guidelines covering the Judge Selection Process are published in this issue. Please read and retain this information for future reference. Thank you Gigi Lorentz-Reiling, chair, Carl Ashby and Dick Schaefer for your hard work and dedication to this project. USKBTC Members WILL SELECT the Judges, not the committee. The new committee, consisting of Dick Schaefer, Gigi Reiling, Nick Fletcher and Margo Steinman will manage the process.

The proposed amendments to the clubs constitution and by-laws are acceptable to the AKC. These will be submitted to the members for a vote. These are NOT sweeping revisions, but rather clarifications and modernization made to conform with AKC guidelines. One of the changes splits the responsibilities of secretary into both a recording and corresponding secretary. Thank you Bill Lynch for chairing this committee and Carl Ashby, Martha Nazak and Gretchen Quinn for serving.

I want to thank the outgoing governors, Nick Fletcher, Carol Kearney, Bryan Kincaid and Martha Nazak for their dedi- cation to the Kerry Blue Terrier and the USKBTC. We have 31 active committees plus 11 committees dealing with events and competition, all of which involve some level of board participation. In addition to Martha as chair, the nominating committee consisted of Bonnie Whelehan and Dick Schaefer with Linda Olsen and Terry Worful as alternates. Martha and Carol are term limited. Professional demands on Bryan and Nick are such that they are, at this time, unable to serve another term. The slate recommended by the nominating com- mittee consists of Lisa Frankland, Bill Kearney, Dr. Jann Lane, Tom Rogers and Carol Wert. Bios have been mailed to all members. This slate was developed to reflect the geographic location and interest level of members. In addi- tion, Dr. Scott Kellogg submitted a petition and acceptance letter declaring his candidacy. We now have six experi- enced and qualified members of the USKBTC running for the board."

The USKBTC has pulled its application for the KBT to participate in earth- events after being informed by the AKC that in the Master Test must negotiate obstacles, turns and obstructions in a tunnel that constricts to approxi- mately 6 inches. After a discussion with USKBTC members and other larger terrier club members interested in earth dog/strong dog events, a determination will be made on how to proceed. James R. Tebbetts has been working to develop an event for the larger . Information on such a proposed event written by Jim is printed in this edition of Blueprints on page 12. In the meantime, we are proceeding with AKC approval for Herding!

Lynn Duckett has resigned as rescue chair. Lynn, assisted by dedicated members, devoted considerable time and effort to rescue for many years. Thanks to Lynn and all who are participating in rescue. A committee is in the pro- cess of reviewing how the USKBTC rescue program functions with a view towards broader chapter club participation. The objective being the best possible program for the KBT. Few KBT’s bred by USKBTC members require rescue; most of those ending up in rescue originate in puppy mills.

Dr. Scott Kellogg, Health & Genetics chair, has secured a commitment from Dr. Giger to address the Factor XI Muta- tion at 5:30p.m. before our annual meeting and dinner on Friday, October 6.

Fred Fishell’s Kerrytoons book “The World According to Mike” is hot off the presses and will be available on the web site, from chapter clubs and at Montgomery. Thank you Fred Fishell and Carol Kearney for making this happen. The proceeds will go exclusively to support USKBTC Charitable Funds efforts.

Many of us attend Montgomery in RV’s. With the Futurity being held at the Hatboro grounds in 2006, eliminating the need to move R.V.’s, concerns were expressed about transportation to Fishers. We are arranging for both security and transportation from Hatboro to the annual meeting and dinner.

I had the opportunity to attend the KBTC of S.C. Specialty held in conjunction with the Great Western Terrier Associa- tion show at the new El Dorado Regional Park show site in Long Beach, California. This large park is convenient to regional airports and has ample parking for cars and R.V.’s. The members of the KBTC of S.C. worked hard and had a most successful show! They are ready for next years USKBTC Traveling Specialty. Plan to attend, you will have a great time.

Summer is here, and the busiest time of the show season for most of us. The re- sults of many of our chapter club specialties may be found in this issue, along with the gallery of winners showcasing our fellow breeders and their best friends. Some of our shows have write-ups that recap the day for those of us who could not attend. Please consider doing this for your club show the next time it occurs. It just may inspire someone who has long considered attending to actually do so! This issue also contains articles highlighting herding and strongdog activities, up- dates from our Health and Genetics committee and our new judge selection process guidelines. Upcoming specialty show information is also here, and that includes Montgomery weekend. It will be here before you know it. Attending Montgomery is a wonderful experience. You meet so many people, see lots of incredible Kerries, and catch up with long-time friends. Sitting ringside is a great place to spot that po- tential sire for your next litter, or perhaps start planning that next litter. I hope to see you there! We want to thank everyone who took out ads in this issue. This is a terrific place to share photos of that special Kerry in your life, and our rates are excellent. But please consider sharing more than just show photos. Candid shots of our Kerries just having fun, participating in performance events, or even getting into mischief (is that possible?) will be welcomed. There’s always a spot to be filled in our maga- zine, and what better way to fill it? Finally, please remember that this is your magazine. If you have something you would like to contribute, please contact us. We will certainly consider suggestions for articles of interest. Contact information for me and Edie may be found on page 5 of every issue. Until next time, enjoy every day with your Kerries! Janie MacBryde, Editor [email protected]

MANY YEARS DEDICATION IN KERRY BLUE TERRIER RESCUE

I want to thank our USKBTC club members for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your national rescue chair for the last eight years. I have memories I can cherish forever of the dogs I've worked with and learned to love. It was amazing; eve- ry time I set out to teach a dog new tricks, they always found a way to teach me something new. I learned a lot of idiosyncrasies about this breed we all love. Mostly, though, I learned to appreciate the spirit, the tenacity and the intelligence of Kerry Blue Terriers!

I can't imagine any other club position that would've allowed me to learn so much about this breed. I had the unique privilege of working with dogs from many different blood lines, both American and foreign bred. I've personally watched specimens of this breed overcome what would have seemed to be insurmountable obstacles during their rehabilitation. Yet, with very few exceptions, the Kerry spirit has been strong enough to help them learn the new skills necessary to live a happy life in their new homes. I did not do this alone; I had the help of a handful of dedicated volunteers. People who truly cared about the future of this breed volunteered their time to help these dogs along their way. Thank you to all of you who helped!

For the first time ever, there are more Kerries out in the community bred by com- mercial breeders, backyard breeders and foreign breeders than by our dedicated club members. I fear that this, in itself, will probably prove to be the biggest challenge our breed will ever face. Those of us who've lived with this breed for years know that Ker- ries can be an absolute delight to live with when properly trained and socialized. Yet, an under-socialized and poorly trained Kerry can be a threat to our breed's future. I hope all of you will be generous with your time and expertise. If you see a Kerry in the hands of a novice owner who has no reputable breeder as their mentor, please step up and offer your help. You could make a real difference in the future of not only that dog and its family, but the future reputation of our breed!

Finally, I want to assure the club that I will always be available to help any novice Kerry owner or any Kerry in need. Please make it a priority to find the time to help a Kerry in need. Thanks again to all the people who said "yes" when I called for help with a Kerry in need!

23 Blueprints Summer 2006

A Word from Charitable Funds…

As many of you know the US Kerry Blue Charitable Fund was established in 2002. Its purpose was to serve the Kerry Blue Terrier in four important areas:

1) Rescue Fund – this fund supports grants used to provide Kerry Blue Terrier rescue services.

2) Health and Genetics Fund - this fund makes grants in support of research in areas of health and ge- netics of particular importance to the Kerry Blue Terrier.

3) Education Fund – the education fund supports education of all those interested in the Kerry Blue Terri- er including publications, websites, and seminars.

4) General Fund – donations to this fund are used to support the work of the other funds through internal grants to those funds. Undesignated gifts will initially be held in this fund.

Since the Fund was established we have worked diligently to build the assets of the Funds while undertak- ing major support of the PNA Research being done at the University of Missouri. To date we have award- ed over $20,000 in grants to support Health and Genetics, Education, and Rescue. This is quite impres- sive, since our Fund is relatively new compared to other Parent Clubs whose equivalent organizations are often decades older than ours.

Our current objective is to continue to grow fund assets while undertaking occasional substantial support such as the PNA Grant. We believe the real key to long term growth will be planned giving that includes the Funds in the wills of our members. Other comparable organizations have used this method as the key to growing their assets. The reality is that we must grow our financial resources substantially in order to having a meaningful impact and that means it will take many years to be in a position to have a significant impact on our core areas.

You can help by considering making the Funds one of the recipients of your estate. In addition, support an area of interest today. We have grown our asset base through small gifts and that will be crucial to our future.

Feel free to contact any Board member for more information on how you can make a difference!

Instructions for Sample Submission

Please follow these instructions to obtain a DNA sample and remember to provide all the necessary information when you send your animal’s sample. You need to send either a blood sample or cheek swabs but not both and we prefer, a blood sample. To receive swab kits, please email [email protected] number animals to be tested, name and address. If you have further questions contact us via this email or call (215) 898-3375 or (215) 898- 8894.

Blood Sample Collection (performed by a veterinary clinician or nurse)

1. Label one EDTA (purple top) tube with owner’s last name and animal’s name (or AKC#) 2. Take a 1-2-ml blood sample. 3. A blood sample must be kept cold but not frozen until shipping. 4. Complete required submission form and mail with sample. 5. Mail tube in mailer by 2-day delivery or regular service. Your veterinarian may have special Styrofoam contain- ers or cardboard mailers to send blood tubes in a ZiplockTM bag in bubble wrap for protection. 6. For international shipment a customs declaration and proforma invoice must be filled out (see our website).

Cheek Swab Sample Collection 1. To avoid contamination with food, do not feed the animal at least three hours before you collect the sample. 2. Wash your hands before you collect the sample. 3. Label the packages that contain the cheek swab brushes with the owner’s last name and the animal’s name and/or AKC number. 4. Open the end of the swab package that shows the word, “peel,” printed on it. Be careful not to touch the brush end as you remove the swab. 5. You may also wish to ask a second person to gently restrain the animal’s head while you collect the DNA sam- ple. 6. Insert brush end between the animal’s gums and inside of the cheek. Roll the brush on the surface of the inside of the cheek for 15-20 seconds. Make sure that the brush is in contact with the cheek and not just with the saliva. 7. Return brush to its original package, allow it to dry, and then tape the opened end shut. 8. Repeat steps 3-5 for the second brush using opposite side of mouth. Two to three swab brushes are needed for each animal tested. 9. If you plan to test another animal, remember to wash your hands before you start with the next dog. 10. Secure brushes from each animal tested in a separate ZiplockTM bag. 11. The samples can be mailed by regular or express mail to address below.

Your participation and your animal’s results will be kept strictly confidential!

THE UNITED STATES KERRY BLUE TERRIER CLUB CODE OF ETHICS

This document defines the ethical standards to which we ascribe as a condition of membership in the United Stated Kerry Blue Terrier Club (USKBTC). Membership is a privi- lege conferred by the Board of Governors, acting for the Membership, upon those individuals who meet the high standards set forth in the Club Constitution and Bylaws and this Code. As members, we are individually charged with complying with this code and demanding similar compliance of all other members. We must hold the interest of the Kerry Blue Terrier superior to our own in exercising the responsibilities that accompany the privileges of membership.

I. RESPONSIBILITIES AS A MEMBER

 Members of the USKBTC, as Stewards to the breed, have the obligation to protect and serve the best interests of the Kerry Blue Terrier at all times. A member's every action should reflect credit on themselves, the USKBTC and, above all, the Kerry Blue Terrier.

 The approved standard for the breed is the fundamental imperative guiding our actions. Members have the obligation to protect and serve these standards as a condition of membership.

 Members must be familiar with and comply with the rules of the American Kennel Club (AKC); the Constitution and By-laws of the USKBTC; and (as appropriate) the rules established by any member club of the USKBTC.

 Members will observe the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship at all times. Whether as a breeder, exhibitor, or spectator, they shall conduct themselves in a manner that reflects positively on the Kerry Blue Terrier, dogs in general, and the sport of showing dogs.

73  Members shall maintain the highest standards of health and sanitation for their own Kerry Blue Terriers, as well as for any other animals in their possession or entrusted to their care. They shall demand the same high standards of others,Blueprints members and non-members Summer alike. 2006

II. RESPONSIBILITIES AS A BREEDER A Breeder shall:

 Be guided at all times by the approved standard for the Kerry Blue Terrier and shall consider breeding only those specimens that conform to the standard.

 When contemplating breeding a litter or providing the services of a stud dog, strive toward maintaining breed type and producing dogs of exceptional quality, temperament, and condition. Breeding or supporting breeding to a lesser standard is not acceptable.

 Use for breeding only those dogs that are healthy and free from serious congenital and hereditary defects. Refrain from further use, any bitch or stud dog that has developed such a health problem or produced any serious inherited defects detrimental to the offspring and the overall well being of the breed.

 Not use a bitch for breeding prior to reaching eighteen (18) months of age (preferably 24 months) or older than eight (8) years of age. A bitch should not be bred more than two (2) out of three (3) consecutive heat cycles, nor produce more than five (5) litters in her lifetime. Recognizing the variations in heat cycles and sizes of litters, valid ex- ceptions may exist, however it is incumbent on the breeder to exercise good judgment in exercising such exceptions.

 Not sell puppies to pet shops either outright or on consignment; supply puppies for auctions, raffles, or other such activities; refrain from selling to persons whose intention (either known or suspected) is to resell or use the puppy in a breeding program not complying with this code of ethics. The breeder shall ensure that the prospective buyer is prepared to provide the same degree of care required of members of the USKBTC. The Code of Ethics should be provided and discussed with potential buyers as part of a thorough screening process. All buyers should be encouraged to become members of the USKBTC and member clubs.

 Promptly apply for AKC registration of the litter. Puppies should not be sold prior to reaching ten (10) weeks of age (preferably 12 weeks). The sale of every dog shall in- clude a signed registration or registration application (Blue Slip), and a four-generation pedigree. Any exceptions to these requirements, or valid restrictions or limitations imposed as conditions to the sale (e.g., no breeding) must be agreed to in writing by both parties at the time of sale. It is strongly recommended that a written agreement ac- company all sales. Buyers should be provided with assistance and support in the setting of ears and in learning proper grooming. If the buyer is not located in the same area, the breeder should make arrangements with another USKBTC member in that area to assist the new owner.

 Provide with each sale, a record of dated and types of immunization given, immunizations required, and veterinary health records. Instructions should be provided, preferably in writing, on diseases and hereditary factors related to the breed, proper medical care, feeding, and grooming. Providing a copy of the current USKBTC Handbook represents a means of conveying this type of information, and is a sound investment on the part of the breeder. No puppy should be sold without either temporary or permanent protec- tion against distemper-hepatitis and parvo. Puppies should have a veterinary examination, and worming if required, before sale.

 Maintain accurate and complete records of stock, matings, pedigrees, show records, and transfers. Breeders are responsible for conducting research on their pedigrees to en- sure correct ancestry, accurate spelling of names, and correct registration numbers. Breeders should be familiar with and comply with all record keeping requirements re- quired by the AKC. Litter registration applications must be correct and promptly requested. Individual puppy registration should be completed in a timely manner.

 Shall not engage in false or misleading advertising or other misrepresentations with respect to their own breeding. They shall not malign others by making false or misleading statements regarding another member's dogs, breeding practices, or person. Advertising should not be worded to attract undesirable buyers nor encourage raising dogs for profit.

 Consider the growing problems related to excess dogs ending up in animal shelters and should exercise sound judgment and prudent restraint in their breeding programs. Litters should be limited to numbers that are consistent with achieving a sound breeding program and the best interests of the Kerry Blue Terrier.

 Be prepared to assume lifetime responsibility for any litter produced.

III. RESPONSIBILITIES AS AN EXHIBITOR OR HANDLER

 Act professionally at all times in caring for and exhibiting any dog in your charge.

 Do not engage in any questionable contact with judges prior to exhibiting under them.

 Comply with AKC Rules and Regulations for Dog Shows, Obedience Trials, Field Trials, and The Guidelines for Dog Show Judges.

 Exhibit or handle only those dogs that conform as closely as possible to the approved standard.

 Do not indulge in the practice of making "kennel majors", or exhibiting filler dogs that they know themselves to be unworthy of championships, for the purpose of finishing dogs. Such practices lessen the meaning and value of a championship and do not serve the breed.

IV. ENFORCEMENT

 The USKBTC expects adherence to this Code of Ethics and blatant disregard of these standards will not be condoned. Violations of the standards are not in the best interests of the Club or the breed. Such behavior can serve as a cause of imposing discipline or terminating membership if charges are brought before the Board of Governors in ac- cordance with the procedures as defined in Article VI (Discipline) of the USKBTC Constitution and Bylaws.

 Article VI addresses the specific procedures for proffering charges; the hearing process; and the rights of the parties involved. Each member is expected to be fully familiar with this very important provision of the By-laws.
