Consequences of within- and between-group conflict in dwarf mongooses Amy Morris-Drake A dissertation submitted to the University of Bristol in accordance with the requirements for award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Life Sciences January 2021 School of Biological Sciences Word count: 48,443 Summary Conflict is rife in the natural world and is widely recognised as a powerful selective pressure in social evolution. For group-living species, conflict over valuable resources arises between members of the same group (within-group conflict) and with conspecific outsiders (between-group conflict; also called outgroup or intergroup conflict). Traditionally, research on nonhuman animals has focused on the contests that arise within- and between groups; in the former case, there have also been extensive studies of the immediate consequences of aggressive interactions. By contrast, relatively little is known about the short-term consequences of between-group conflict and, for both conflict types, there has been little empirical consideration of the longer-term consequences. In this thesis, I combine detailed behavioural observations, field experiments and long-term life-history data to investigate the consequences of within- and between-group conflict over different timeframes, using wild dwarf mongooses (Helogale parvula) as a model system. First, I show that unresolved within-group conflict can have cumulative behavioural effects and present evidence for delayed post-contest management by bystanders (Chapter Two). In the remaining data chapters, I focus on between-group conflict. I find consequences of outgroup threats in the short-term (in the hour after exposure) for within-group affiliation, foraging and sentinel behaviour (Chapter Three). I then demonstrate that such threats can also influence behaviour over longer timeframes, with carryover effects on affiliation into the following day, and cumulative effects on affiliation, foraging, sentinel and territorial behaviour, as well as body mass, after repeated outgroup encounters across a week. Lastly, I examine the reproductive consequences of between-group conflict and, unexpectedly, find a positive relationship with pup survival. By demonstrating an array of effects over timeframes rarely addressed previously, I help shed light on the more-lasting consequences of social conflict which is important for a greater understanding of how it shapes the lives of group-living species. 1 2 In loving memory of Peter For a life full of adventure 3 4 Acknowledgements From the UK to South Africa, I have been lucky to work with so many incredibly generous and inspirational people. For that feat alone I will have eternal respect for her. She has been a great friend and collaborator, and although she stopped working directly with the project in 2017, she has always been there for me when I have had questions, and there have been many! This probably goes some way to explaining why our voice notes are rarely shorter than 10 minutes, sorry about that. Something I have always appreciated from Julie is feeling able to vent during challenging times, and because she understands the work better than anyone, I never have to explain myself. I’m so happy that we managed to coincide our field seasons at the beginning of the PhD. Having Julie and Garth down the road on future trips was also such a treat – thank you for the many catch-ups over G&Ts and large glasses of vino! The same can be said about Charlotte Christensen. Charlotte and I spent our very first field season on the project together back in 2013; an experience that cemented a life-long friendship and a new-found love for fieldwork in Africa. Charlotte is one of those friends who completely understands what I do and why, with a healthy mongoose obsession herself! I feel very lucky to have had her support throughout the PhD process. Charlotte was also the original dwarfie “poo-ninja”, so I also have her to thank for introducing me to that less glamourous side of fieldwork. None of this research would have been possible without Hennie, Eddie and Darnie Yeates. I would like to thank them for allowing us to work on their beautiful reserve. I would also like to extend my thanks to the friendly staff I overlapped with whilst working on Sorabi - Christoffel, Suzelle, James, Justice, Lindiwe and Petunia. From honey badgers raiding our bins and mysterious elephant break ins, to leopard kills, zebra meat collection and numerous flat tyres, we all experienced this rollercoaster together. Regular research group meetings on Zoom, virtual writing retreats and quizzes have all helped to keep morale up during this challenging time. II Western Gorilla Social Structure and Inter-Group Dynamics Robin Morrison The study of western gorilla social behaviour has primarily focused on family groups, with research on inter-group interactions usually limited to the interactions of a small number of habituated groups or those taking place in a single location. Key reasons for this are the high investment of time and money required to habituate and monitor many groups simultaneously, and the difficulties of making observations on inter-group social interaction in dense tropical rainforest.

Patterson-Kane American Veterinary Medical Association Heather Piper Manchester Metropolitan University It has been suggested that acts of violence against human and nonhuman an- imals share commonalities, and that animal abuse is a sentinel for current or future violence toward people. The popular and professional acceptance of strong connections between types of violence is beginning to be used to justify social work interventions and to influence legal decision making, and so requires greater scrutiny. Examination of the limited pool of empirical data suggests that animal abuse is relatively common among men, with violent offenders having an increased probability of reporting prior animal abuse—with the majority of violent offend- ers not reporting any animal abuse. Causal explanations for “the link,” such as empathy impairment or conduct disorder, suffer from a lack of validating research and, based on research into interhuman violence, the assumption that violence has a predominant, single underlying cause must be questioned. An (over)emphasis on the danger that animal abusers pose to humans serves to assist in achieving a consensus that animal abuse is a serious issue, but potentially at the cost of failing to focus on the most common types of abuse, and the most effective strategies for reducing its occurrence. Nothing in this review and discussion should be taken as minimizing the importance of animals as frequent victims of violence, or the co-occurrence of abuse types in “at-risk” households.

McAdam Most organisms interact with conspecifics and therefore have a social environment. While it is understood that variation in the composition of this social environment can have important consequences for gregarious species, solitary, territorial species may also live in socially complex environments where the composition of neighbouring conspecifics can directly influence time and energy spent on territory defence. The importance of the social environment for solitary species is, however, poorly understood. In this thesis, I combined behavioural observations, field experiments, and long-term data analysis from a population of North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) to explore the effects of the social environment on the territorial dynamics, behaviour and fitness of an ‘asocial’ species. In particular, I looked at two aspects of the social environment that were likely to have important effects on territorial species: familiarity and relatedness with neighbours. In my first chapter, I established that squirrels living in social neighbourhoods with high average familiarity faced reduced risk of intrusion and cache pilferage from conspecifics, providing evidence of the ‘dear- enemy’ phenomenon in red squirrels. In Chapter 2, I experimentally demonstrated that red squirrel ‘rattle’ vocalizations serve an important territorial defence function by deterring conspecifics from intruding.

Males interact aggressively to displace other males from territories. Body size is known to influence resource- holding potential in many other taxa, and studies of bees suggest that body size is important for territorial males. Familiarity and the avoidance of kin competition are also known to influence territorial behaviours in other taxa but has not been studied in male bees. Recent evidence suggests that nestmate recognition occurs in X. virginica and there is also evidence for the avoidance of kin competition. This thesis tests whether body size, familiarity, and kinship influence territorial interactions using social networking tools. Around half of all males attempted to establish or defend a territory. Males that established or defended territories are larger than males that did not. Male body size has a weak positive influence on hover rates, related to holding territories, the number of hovering neighbours each male had, and the number of males each male chased or fled in defence of territories. I found no evidence to support that familiarity influences aggressive behaviours, but there is a strong correlation with the number of neighbours a male had and the number of males it chased or fled. Brothers estimated from microsatellite genotypes are no more aggressive to each other than to non-siblings.
