My Geo-Naturepark Bergstrasse-Odenwald MY GEO-NATUREPARK BERGSTRASSE-ODENWALD “When you’re floating up there in the space station, looking down on this small blue planet, and when you then see how much blackness there is all around, then it seems down- right grotesque that human beings wage war against each other or burn down the forests we need for our survival. What is close to our heart deserves our protection. Our enthusiasm and our commitment. Our appreciation and our far-sightedness. As an invitation and a reward for all of us – today just like for future generations to come. Come along on a journey of discovery! My Geo-Naturepark Bergstrasse-Odenwald: Experience and protect what’s valuable… Do you still remember what soil feels like? Do you like to experience the quiet grandeur of the forest? Do you like to discover the fascinating stories that rocks, plants, and the water can tell about our landscape? Would you like to know where the Propalaeotherium used to live? 6 Exciting questions and answers – stories you can discover, learn, and experience in the Geo-Naturepark Bergstrasse-Odenwald. Unforgettable guided tours through the different landscapes and “Geology and Delights” hiking tours led by one of the Geo-Naturepark Rangers are part of our offers as are the many varied family-friendly topics on nature and the environment – ideal conditions for relaxation and inspiration. Moreover, the many Entrances, Infocentres and Environmental Learning Stations throughout the Geo-Naturepark provide many useful tips and suggestions. And whether you’d like to discover the landscape on your own, or together with the Geo-Naturepark Rangers and the “Geo-Naturepark on site” experts and local guides, you can choose from a great number of well-marked hiking routes, more than 30 adventure trails as well as numerous Geo-Points and specially des- ignated geotopes. Within the region covered by the Geo-Naturepark, you can also explore no less than three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Messel Pit in the north, Lorsch Abbey in the west, as well as the Roman Limes in the east. For the first time in some 40 years, a new world-class regional category was created: The “International Geoscience & Geoparks Programme” (IGGP) with the honorary distinction of “UNESCO Global Geo- park”. The Geo-Naturepark Bergstrasse-Odenwald as one of more than 140 UNESCO Global Geoparks worldwide has thus been ranked on the same level as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. What do the “UNESCO Global Geoparks” stand for? • Particular geological heritage of international importance, linked with nature and culture 8 • Environmental education by experts and committed individuals on-site • Cooperation with regional partners, integration of traditions and products • Promoting sustainable development and nature-friendly tourism • Developing a regional identity • Adherence to high quality standards by cooperating with science • Holistic view of planet Earth – model regions for the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 By their international cooperation, the “UNESCO Global Geoparks” open up our awareness of global inter- connections, they foster the appreciation of our planet as home to all human beings, thus providing an important contribution for international understanding. • Protection Issues in Selected European Historic Towns and Their Contemporary Development
E3S Web of Conferences 45, 00043 (2018) https://doi.org/10.1051/e3sconf/20184500043 INFRAEKO 2018 Protection issues in selected European historic towns and their contemporary development Dominika Kuśnierz-Krupa1,* 1Cracow University of Technology, Faculty of Architecture, Podchorążych Street 1, Cracow, Poland Abstract. The presented article is aimed at presenting a few selected examples of small European historic towns whose properly protected cultural heritage considerably contributes to their development in the 21st century. The issue of protection and revalorisation of Polish towns, particularly the smaller ones, is relevant nowadays. Historic heritage seems to be a burden for local authorities and residents because very often they are not aware of how it could contribute to the multidirectional development of their towns. The local inhabitants and authorities of small historic towns in Western European countries respect their heritage much more than Poles, as they associate it with the idea of sustainable development, “place specificity”, and finally, with an opportunity for development, treating cultural heritage as a basis for economic progress and building new and modern infrastructure. It is worth drawing attention here, that sustainable development denotes changing the reality in such a way that the development would optimally satisfy the needs of modern man, without violating the needs of future generations. The testimony to the potential of the cultural heritage of historic towns in the context of their modern development is borne by the towns whose authorities and inhabitants were able to utilise their past for building their future. As examples one could name here French (e.g. Auxerre, Provins,) or German towns (e.g.

Large parts of Central Europe have experienced exhumation in Late Cretaceous to Paleogene time. Previous 10 studies mainly focused on thrusted basement uplifts to unravel magnitude, processes and timing of exhumation. This study provides, for the first time, a comprehensive thermochronological dataset from mostly Permo-Triassic strata exposed adjacent to and between the basement uplifts in central Germany, comprising an area of at least some 250-300 km across. Results of apatite fission track and (U-Th)/He analyses on >100 new samples reveal that (i) km-scale exhumation affected the entire region, (ii) thrusting of basement blocks like the Harz Mountains and the Thuringian Forest focused in the Late 15 Cretaceous (about 90-70 Ma) while superimposed domal uplift of central Germany is slightly younger (about 75-55 Ma), and (iii) large parts of the domal uplift experienced removal of 3 to 4 km of Mesozoic strata. Using spatial extent, magnitude and timing as constraints suggests that thrusting and crustal thickening alone can account for no more than half of the domal uplift.
