Aviation Instructor's Handbook (FAA-H-8083-9) Chapter 2: Human Behavior Introduction Derek’s learner, Jason, is very smart and able to retain a lot of information, but has a tendency to rush through the less exciting material and shows interest and attentiveness only when performing tasks that he finds to be interesting. This concerns Derek because he is worried that Jason will overlook many important details and rush through procedures. For a homework assignment Jason was told to take a very thorough look at Preflight Procedures and that for his next flight lesson they would discuss each step in detail. As Derek predicted, Jason found this assignment to be boring and was not prepared. Derek knows that Jason is a “thrill seeker” as he talks about his business, which is a wilderness adventure company. Derek wants to find a way to keep Jason focused and help him find excitement in all areas of learning so that he will understand the complex art of flying and aircraft safety. Learning is the acquisition of knowledge or understanding of a subject or skill through education, experience, practice, or study. This chapter discusses behavior and how it affects the learning process. An instructor seeks to understand why people act the way they do and how people learn. An effective instructor uses knowledge of human behavior, basic human needs, the defense mechanisms humans use that prevent learning, and how adults learn in order to organize and conduct productive learning activities. Definitions of Human Behavior The study of human behavior is an attempt to explain how and why humans function the way they do. -

Meyers3 1University of Essex 2Wake Forest University 3California State University, Sacramento IN PRESS: Death Studies Death Fear and Death Denial 2 Abstract This study explores self-related outcomes (e.g., esteem, self-concept clarity, existential well- being) as a function of the interaction between self-reported levels of death fear and death denial. Consistent with the idea that positive existential growth can come from individuals facing, rather than denying, their mortality, (Cozzolino, 2006), we observed that not fearing and denying death can bolster important positive components of the self. That is, individuals low in death denial and death fear evidenced an enhanced self that is valued, clearly conceived, efficacious, and that has meaning and purpose. Vol. 2, No. 1, 2013, pp. 7-15. doi: 10.11648/j.ajap.20130201.12 Abstract: This study investigates how one’s ability to accept the past contributes to death attitudes within the el- derly population. 115 individuals (47 men and 68 women) participated by filling out self-report questionnaire pack- ets collected from a variety of residential settings. The Death Attitudes Profile – Revised (DAP-R) was used to assess the individuals attitude towards death and the Ability to Accept the Past scale (ACPAST) was used as a measure of ego integrity. A linear regression analysis was used to determine the predictive relationship between the two variables. The results indicate that scores on the ACPAST are significant predictors of DAP-R subscales Neutral Acceptance Fear of Death and Death Avoidance. The results did not show a significant relationship between the scores on the ACPAST and the DAP-R subscales Approach Acceptance or Escape Acceptance. Thus, the ability to accept the past was a significant predictor of Fear of Death, Death Avoidance, and Neutral Acceptance. Yet, accepting the past was not a significant predictor of Approach Acceptance or Escape Acceptance. -

Journal of Philosophy of Life Vol.4, No.2 (May 2014):68-89 The Incoherence of Denying My Death * Lajos L. Brons Abstract The most common way of dealing with the fear of death is denying death. Such denial can take two and only two forms: strategy 1 denies the finality of death; strategy 2 denies the reality of the dying subject. Most religions opt for strategy 1, but Buddhism seems to be an example of the 2nd. All variants of strategy 1 fail, however, and a closer look at the main Buddhist argument reveals that Buddhism in fact does not follow strategy 2. Moreover, there is no other theory that does, and neither can there be. This means that there is no tenable theory that denies death. There may be no universally psychologically acceptable alternative, however, which would mean that if denying death is incoherent, this is an unavoidable incoherence. 1. Introduction The influence of death and how we deal with it on our lives can hardly be overstated. To a large extent, we live our lives in the shadow of death, in a shadow created by fear and denial. There is no fear as deep and pervasive as the fear of death. Everyone fears death, but most of us are able to force this fear into the background, into a slumber from which it awakes only occasionally. Religion is the most important (but not the only) means of establishing this 1 slumber; it is, as Marx wrote, “the opium of the people”: an anxiolytic, or a painkiller. According to Ernest Becker (1973), controlling the fear of death is the primary purpose of religion (and heroism), and religion achieves this by denying death: religion is a symbolic system of death denial. -

Seeing the Difference: Conversations on Death and Dying THE DOREEN B. TOWNSEND CENTER FOR THE HUMANITIES was established at the University of California at Berkeley in 1987 in order to promote interdisciplinary studies in the humanities. Endowed by Doreen B. Townsend, the Center awards fellowships to advanced graduate students and untenured faculty on the Berkeley campus, and supports interdisciplinary working groups, lectures, and team-taught graduate seminars. It also sponsors symposia and conferences which strengthen research and teaching in the humanities, arts, and related social science fields. The Center is directed by Candace Slater, Professor of Spanish and Portuguese. Christina M. Gillis is the Associate Director. SEEING THE DIFFERENCE brings together the texts of a two-day institute on Death and Dying, aimed at facilitating active involvement on the part of diverse attendees from the Arts, Humanities and Medical Practice. Differing conceptual frameworks offer different ways of understanding the dying body: the medical view of the body as a literal text for physical change, the humanist’s view of the boday as the site of complex layers of meaning, and the artist’s creation of the body in terms of alternative explanatory systems. A video of highlights from the Seeing the Difference institute (Seeing the Difference: Conversations on Death and Dying) is also available through the Townsend Center. Begun in 1994-95, the Occasional Papers make available in print and on-line some of the many lectures delivered in Townsend Center programs. The Complex Phenomenon of Denial
ONE The Complex Phenomenon of Denial abstract: Freud drew attention to the puzzling phenomenon of denial in many passages of his work. He focused on some of the contradictory aspects of the phenomenon in an article published in 1925. In that same article Freud theo- rized about a number of characteristics in human beings that one must postu- late in order to do justice to these many puzzling and contradictory aspects of denial. One of the strongest conclusions that Freud made was the claim that negation is a precondition for human freedom. I will present Freud’s ideas, but I will also demonstrate that his analysis is incomplete. In particular, Freud, in his crucial article on denial (“Negation” 1925), did not analyze the arduous work required to undo fully a denial and its consequences. In particular Freud did not draw attention to the need for acts of separation from primary care givers and for the creation of metaphoric moves in order to free oneself from the contradictions inherent in denials. INTRODUCTION In this chapter I will present Freud’s analysis of the puzzling phenomenon of denial, which consists of simultaneously denying and revealing the truth. Thus, when a patient answers that the female figure in his dream is not his mother, Freud interprets the answer as revealing that it really is his mother (Freud, S.E., XIX, 235).1 Or when a patient boasts that it is pleasant not to have had her headaches for so long, Freud interprets this as signaling that the attack is not far off (Ibid. -

Rank, whose early work applied psychoanalytic understanding to an analysis of myth, returned to the core of religious activity as the basis for human activity-its preoccupation with death and meaning-and concluded that the capacity to create myth, religion and art represents a kind of solution to the matter of death by affirming life and what is valuable about life existentially.
