Fucking Crazy by Marcus Campbell
Fucking Crazy By Marcus Campbell Can’t I Put On Some Pants First? Sir, we can get your pants for you. What the hell… here I was… THE Marcus Campbell, a successful internet entreprenuer, in my own house and I can’t even get my own pants? Sir are there any guns in the house? Is this some kind of conspiracy… first I can’t get my own damn pants… now you think I’m gonna shoot people… what the hell kind of police are you… you are supposed to be on my side… I pay my taxes… over $168,000 in one year alone… that’s probably more than all you guys make combined! Place your hands behind your back… we are putting these on for your safety. My safety… HA if you let me do what I planned to I wouldn’t even be here. I remember the day as if it happened yesterday… Thoughts racing thru my mind as I effortlessly complied with everything asked of me by the police as I was cuffed and placed in the back of a police car in front of those peering eyes hidden between the openings of my neighbors window shades. These neighbors have all they need to make fun of me and call me whatever they want… great… what else can I do to make this day any worse. This was the day… I would be placed on an involuntary psyche hold… 5150 as they call it. Which basically means the state of California thinks I am too dangerous to myself to be allowed to have any normal human rights for 48 hours. -
Chapter One: Postwar Resentment and the Invention of Middle America 10
MIAMI UNIVERSITY The Graduate School Certificate for Approving the Dissertation We hereby approve the Dissertation of Jeffrey Christopher Bickerstaff Doctor of Philosophy ________________________________________ Timothy Melley, Director ________________________________________ C. Barry Chabot, Reader ________________________________________ Whitney Womack Smith, Reader ________________________________________ Marguerite S. Shaffer, Graduate School Representative ABSTRACT TALES FROM THE SILENT MAJORITY: CONSERVATIVE POPULISM AND THE INVENTION OF MIDDLE AMERICA by Jeffrey Christopher Bickerstaff In this dissertation I show how the conservative movement lured the white working class out of the Democratic New Deal Coalition and into the Republican Majority. I argue that this political transformation was accomplished in part by what I call the "invention" of Middle America. Using such cultural representations as mainstream print media, literature, and film, conservatives successfully exploited what came to be known as the Social Issue and constructed "Liberalism" as effeminate, impractical, and elitist. Chapter One charts the rise of conservative populism and Middle America against the backdrop of 1960s social upheaval. I stress the importance of backlash and resentment to Richard Nixon's ascendancy to the Presidency, describe strategies employed by the conservative movement to win majority status for the GOP, and explore the conflict between this goal and the will to ideological purity. In Chapter Two I read Rabbit Redux as John Updike's attempt to model the racial education of a conservative Middle American, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, in "teach-in" scenes that reflect the conflict between the social conservative and Eastern Liberal within the author's psyche. I conclude that this conflict undermines the project and, despite laudable intentions, Updike perpetuates caricatures of the Left and hastens Middle America's rejection of Liberalism. -
Album of the Week: the Flaming Lips' Oczy Mlody
Album Of The Week: The Flaming Lips’ Oczy Mlody There are bands that do unique and weird things, and then there’s The Flaming Lips. Things have changed a lot since the band started out as “the punks on acid” in the early ‘80s and then gradually became an enigmatic and psychedelic act of wonder. The core members of Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins and Steven Drozd always manage to delve into different territory and push the artistic envelope with each release. Their latest, Oczy Mlody, takes the senses to a totally different place. Soothing tones and hypnotic vibes are abundant from start to finish. It’s The Flaming Lips’ first album without longtime drummer Kliph Spurlock who left after the making of the band’s previous album, The Terror, in 2014. There are orchestral dimensions and extravagant structures that make up parts of each track. Coyne’s vocals seem like they’re traveling over the rhythms and beats as if on a voyage. It seems like the band has gone further toward the electronic realm while retaining their psychedelic roots. The album goes along with the space aesthetics that have always been a part of The Flaming Lips’ sound. A dream pop presence is noticeable while the wide-ranging arrangements keep the album from becoming redundant and boring. For a band as limitless as The Flaming Lips, there’s not a lot that can be predicted when a new release is put out. Oczy Mlody is a great example of how Coyne and company can progress their art and present new things more than 30 years later. -

BAD 58 ALCHEMY 1 STEINER: ... Was sagen die Sirenen? -

Omaha's Culture Club
March 25, 2007 THE TALK Omaha’s Culture Club By KURT ANDERSEN When I tell people I’m originally from Omaha, they often confuse it with Oklahoma or Iowa. “Omaha,” a Manhattan photographer I met the other day said. “That’s near Nebraska, isn’t it?” Omaha is one of those ultimate flyover places, an urban Podunk so vaguely situated in coastal Americans’ mental maps that the mere mention of it can actually halt conversation. Sometimes I rattle off the names of movie stars from Omaha: Fred Astaire, Henry Fonda, Marlon Brando, Nick Nolte. Of course, this pantheon also implies that it is a place that requires its most exciting citizens to move on. Since Warren Buffett has become a household name, though, the city acquired a somewhat perverse new brand identity as an extraordinarily ordinary city where the most brilliant American investor and second-richest man in the country chooses to live, of all places! For the past three decades, I’d returned to Omaha once every year or two strictly to visit my parents, so my experience of the city had been pretty much limited to drives to and from the airport. But around 2003, I started hearing from New Yorkers that a kind of cultural awakening was afoot in my hometown. Omaha? It isn’t yet Seattle or Austin, but it’s no longer some kind of Great Plains version of Hartford or Fresno, either. “Alternative” and “independent” aren’t just marketing catchwords in Omaha. The blossoming is real and multifarious. It didn’t happen overnight. And it certainly didn’t happen as a result of any grand master plan by the city establishment. -
