2019 ANNUAL REPORT

2015 Annual Report WELCOME Hi. I am Ben Simpson. I am a Special Olympics Illinois (SOILL) athlete, Global Messenger, and an Athlete Leader on the Board of Directors.

As an athlete, I participate in , , powerlifting, and . I am also an employee at Casey’s General Store for the past 6 years, where they, as a big supporter of SOILL honored me by writing a wonderful article on my work with them and my participation with Special Olympics Illinois. I am also a Boy Scout and I am working on one day getting my Eagle Scout rank. I compete in hip-hop dance, and I am a board member on the Lincoln Land Down’s Syndrome Association!

2019 was an amazing year for me in Special Olympics! I was off to a great start in January when I became the 2019 Polar Plunge Ambassador for Region H! I gave six speeches talking about the plunge to LETR groups, cadet groups, and many Lake Club meetings. I also got to talk on the radio and interview on Channel 20! Since Diane Vanderkooy of the Illinois State Police was in Abu Dhabi running the Torch Run Final Leg to World Games, she let me fill in as captain of our team in the Plunge! It was really cold day in March, but a great event!

In February I was elected to the Board of Directors as an athlete leader director! What an honor to work closely with Dave Breen and so many amazing members that make up the board! I had my first meeting in Galena. We had a wonderful couple of days there meeting new people and I learned so much about the board.

In March, I was entered in to the regional swim competition in Edwardsville. I got a gold and was able to go on to State Games in June. Also, in March, I received some checks from the Knights of Columbus and was able thank them on behalf of Special Olympics Illinois for all they do for our athletes.

On May 29th, I was invited to tour the Governor’s Mansion! I got to meet Governor and MK Pritzker and had a great lunch with them. They gave the athletes, who went to World Games, Special Appreciation certificates. The Governor declared that May 29th as Special Olympics Day in Illinois!

June’s highlight was Summer Games in Bloomington! I got to help Diane again by running the torch for two days! Then off to Tribute Park for a reception. The next day we had our board meeting and visited many of the sports venues at the Games afterward! I competed in a swimming relay on Saturday. My powerlifting coach made me his assistant coach and because I couldn’t participate, I got to help with the athletes!

August throughout the end of the year, I gave another speech to the Cadet Class, accepted another check form the Knights of Columbus and helped with an LETR event at Schnuck’s as well as Culver’s Butter Burger and Badges. I also gave a speech and helped hand out medals at an LETR 5K run in Taylorville helped out at our Trivia Knight in November and was honored by the Knights at their State Meeting and Dinner Banquet. What a privilege!

I am so very proud to be a part of Special Olympics Illinois! The training, the sports, and the opportunities to speak to many groups have enhanced my life and helped make me the confident, outgoing person I am today! I am grateful for all of these opportunities! Dear Special Olympics Illinois Friends: What an exciting year 2019 was! Not only was it our 21st consecutive year of growth in number of athletes served, but following the success of 2018 and the 50th Anniversary, Special Olympics Illinois was able to embark on several initiatives in 2019 to further advance the organization’s ‘Big Three’ organizational goals - Improving Athlete Experience, Reaching More Athletes, and Raising More Resources. And as usual, the athletes led the way to our success! With over 170 athlete leaders making 418 appearances to over 70,000 people, not to mention the nearly 50,000 athlete participations in 2019, Special Olympics Illinois athletes were inspiring people all across the state, country, and world. So thank you to our athletes and the entire Special Olympics Illinois community - families , volunteers, coaches, Board of Directors, Foundation Board, partners, donors, fans, and staff – for making 2019 an incredible year!

This annual report is intended to provide an overview of these 2019 accomplishments and the financial activities that support Special Olympics Illinois programs and initiatives as well as give you a look at some additional highlights from the last year – including a delegation of 15 from Special Olympics Illinois traveling to Abu Dhabi for the 2019 World Games, Unified Champion Schools expanding with our Urban Strategy in and East St. Louis, the formation of an Athlete Input Council, continued growth and innovation of the Illinois Special Olympics Foundation to support Special Olympics Illinois programming, and the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run raising more than $5 million!

With input from athletes, families, and agencies across the state and a tremendous effort by the Special Olympics Illinois team and Board of Directors, 2019 brought the creation of the organization’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan. With a vision that Special Olympics Illinois will be a global leader in shaping a culture where people with and without intellectual disabilities are fully integrated into the community by providing year round opportunities in competitive sports, health education, leadership and personal development, the organization has outlined its priorities for the next five year to Reach More Athletes, Improve the Athlete Experience, and Raise More Resources.

As we reflect on the success of 2019 and look to the future of Special Olympics Illinois, it is always the determination and spirit of the athletes that keeps us inspired. I know we will overcome any challenges 2020 brings and continue to further the mission of Special Olympics Illinois stronger and better than ever. Thank you to all who helped to make 2019 such a success and your continued dedication and support as we move forward into 2020.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS ATHLETE OATH SOILL Athlete Leadership gave Alex Huegen his life and laughter back nine years ago. He didn’t talk. He didn’t smile. He was drowning in just surviving and questioning why he had to be different

One weekend of leadership training changed Alex’s trajectory. It allowed him the ability to dream, create goals, feel supported, get his grades up, believe he could go to college, and most importantly, believe in himself. It has lead him to friendships and mentorships who taught him the values of being trustworthy, dedicated, confident, committed, and having a great work ethic; all with a sense of humor sprinkled in .

It gave Alex the confidence to try out for his high school cross country team which was the cornerstone to his full ride XC scholarship to Kaskaskia College, where he is currently working on two IT certifications.

Alex also works as a janitor at our local school, and besides being known as a hard worker, he is more known for greeting all the staff and children with a smile, joke and a laugh.

Special Olympics Illinois and Athlete Leadership, brought his laughter back and along with it, a leader.

ATHLETE EXPERIENCE

Special Olympics Goes To Washington

This past February, Special Olympics delegations from across the country descended onto Capitol Hill to meet with our nation's elected officials. Athletes, unified partners, coaches and staff crisscrossed the halls of Congress, briefing legislators on the importance of expanding educational programming essential to creating more inclusive school environments (directly combating bullying and harmful social stigmas) and the urgent need to provide critical healthcare services to as many athletes as possible. It was a great opportunity for our partners in Washington D.C. to learn how vital federal funding for both Unified Champion Schools and Healthy Athlete Programs are to the Special Olympics mission.

Over the course of two days, the Special Olympics Illinois delegation held a series of face-to-face meetings with U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, along with Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Congressman Mike Quigley. Healthy Athlete Global Messenger Aaron Burdeen spoke powerfully on the healthcare challenges that people with intellectual disabilities face every single day, while Unified Champion School athlete Daniel Shaughnessy and his unified partner, Charlotte Geirer, shared their inspiring story of helping build one of the top unified school programs in the nation!

A huge thank you to our friends on Capitol Hill for being great partners in our global movement!

"While we were there (Washington D.C.), Danny and I spoke to numerous Illinois legislatures about how Special Olympics Unified Champion School programming has changed our lives. Through this experience, Danny and I felt as though we both helped to facilitate change in legislation and funding revolving around Special Olympics, but we also saw the impact on ourselves personally immediately. " - Charlotte Geier, Unified Champion Partner FAMILY

Davonte is so personable and has such a unique way of getting into people’s hearts that, before you know it, people are allowing him to turn on the siren in a police car, look at the sound system at a fundraiser dinner and speak to passengers on a loud speaker, just to name a few.

Davonte has innately learned how to find the influencer and ask them questions. He has endeared a huge group of community leaders including those at Special Olympics Illinois.

How? His mother has a lot to do with it.

Davonte was born prematurely with many complications including a high pallet, swallowing issues, cerebral palsy of the right hand, cognitive delay, and more. However, when mom saw him, she knew in her heart, “this is the one.” She adopted Davonte in 1997 after she retired, and her love and care for him has helped form him into who he is today. She always told Davonte that there is nothing he couldn’t do if he put his mind to it, regardless of his limitations.

She would say, “If you think you can, try it and see!” The rest is history.

Davonte’s leadership abilities came as a result of his participation with Special Olympics. He began participating in the SWSRA (Southwest Special Recreation Association) basketball program when he was 18. Doors opened for him to get involved with the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games where he won a silver medal in the 100 meter run and fifth place the following year. He also participated in the softball throw.

Special Olympics has taught Davonte a lot about teamwork and sportsmanship. His sister, Traci, filled out the application for him to be a part of the Athlete Leadership Program where he would be exposed to other Special Olympics athletes in a different capacity. Here, Davonte learned so many leadership principles.

As a Global Messenger, Davonte was tasked with giving at least five speeches in his community about Special Olympics and how he benefited from it. He was able to speak on a local radio station along with one of the LETR police sergeants who shared his stories of joy in participating in Special Olympics. Later that year, on his last day of school, Davonte gave a presentation to his classmates, teachers and school staff about his future, during which he talked about continuing to participate with Special Olympics as both an athlete and leader.

The Road to World Games in Abu Dhabi “A Sargent Shriver International Messenger Story”

My Special Olympics World Games 2019 experience was incredible and impactful. In my role as a Sargent Shriver International Global Messenger (SSIGM), I had many memorable opportunities during my time in Abu Dhabi for the 2019 World Games. From participating in the Opening Ceremony to attending receptions and having fun with celebrities, there were many highlights I had during the 2019 World Games.

One of my top highlights was when I, along with my fellow SSIGM’s, had the opportunity to participate during the Opening Ceremony which aired on live television. On the global stage, there were 6 speakers, including Tim Shriver, Chairman of Special Olympics, and fellow SSIGM Hasseeb Abbasi from Special Olympics Pakistan. The remaining 9 SSIGM’s stood in a half-circle behind the speakers. This truly was an incredible experience to get the opportunity to stand on the global stage and wave to the crowd. As we were standing on the stage, we were accepted; we were included. And as The Determined, we stood on that stage at the Opening Ceremony as leaders of the Inclusion Revolution.

Another highlight was when Coca-Cola sponsored a luncheon for all of the SSIGM’s. This luncheon took place at the Li Jiang Restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Mhutar Kent, the chairman of Coca Cola, was there and he along with Tim Shriver hosted us. Also in attendance at the Coca-Cola luncheon were members of the Shriver family and many celebrity global ambassadors for Special Olympics who we got to talk to such as Apollo Ohno, Michelle Kawn, Hannah Teter, Dikembe Mutombo, and Dale Moss to name a few. I had the opportunity to kick off the event with a brief speech thanking everyone for their support of all of us SSIGM’s. I then turned the program over to my fellow SSIGM’s to have each of them introduce themselves to all those who attended our luncheon. This luncheon was an incredible experience for us all to have lunch with many well-known personalities.

One of the major speaking opportunities I had during World Games 2019 was speaking at the Media Reception. In addition to the fact that the media reception had the best appetizers of all the receptions we attended (an added bonus to this highlight of my time at World Games), I spoke about inclusion in the media. I also thanked those in the media for coming to World Games and for covering the stories of my fellow Special Olympics athletes who were competing on the global stage. As a media professional myself (founder & host of podcasts on SpecialChronicles.com), I appreciated the fact that those in the media who attended this reception came up to me, after I spoke, and interacted with me. They showed me the power of inclusion. This is what the Inclusion Revolution is about and I’m thankful these members of the media understand why it is important to Choose To Include. I’m grateful the media helped to breakdown barriers, spread to the world our athlete stories and broadcast our athlete voices.
