Florence, Oregon (Heceta Beach) Print Size: 16x20 $200 Oops! Many boats throughout the years have ran aground on the Oregon Coast. Ms. Nicani was one such vessel that did some in September of 2016. This was a sight to see. A dense blanket of fog dramatically decreased visibility even walking out to see the boat. The 50 feet commercial fishing boat was successfully recovered. JO BEAUDREAUX EXPLORE: SNIPPETS OF THE OREGON COAST Old Bridge Deco Florence, Oregon Print Size: 12x12 $200 The historic Siuslaw Bridge is getting a makeover! The project by Oregon Department of Transportation is repairing damaged concrete and replacing old railings. It is getting a special coating which includes zinc to help protect it from the corrosive coast weather. Completion of the project is scheduled for March 2019. We hope that you’ll visit Florence again to see the bridge and all its completed beauty. JO BEAUDREAUX EXPLORE: SNIPPETS OF THE OREGON COAST Black Rocks Yaquina Head, Cobble Beach, Oregon Print Size: 12x12 $200 The Yaquina Head Lighthouse State Park is home to not only the tallest lighthouse in Oregon, but a beautiful black cobble rock beach. The audio is something that you must hear in person. It is nothing like you’ve ever heard. No rocks or artifacts are allowed to be removed from the beach, so why not take home a stunning photo of the black rocks that sing! The mouth of the river between the North and South Jetties is the end of the 110 mile long river. The head of the tide is 26 miles upsteam.     Conde McCullough Conde Balcom McCullough (May 30, 1887 – May 5, 1946) Conde McCullough was a U.S. bridge engineer who is primarily known for designing many of Oregon's coastal bridges on U.S. Route 101.[1] The native of South Dakota worked for the Oregon Department of Transportation from 1919 to 1935 and 1937 until 1946. McCullough also was a professor at Oregon State University. Early life Conde McCullough was born in Redfield, South Dakota, on May 30, 1887.[2] In 1891, he and his family moved to Iowa where his father died in 1904.[2] McCullough then worked at various jobs to May 30, 1887 [2] Born support the family. In 1910, he graduated from Iowa State Redfield, South Dakota, U.S. [3] May 5, 1946 (aged 58) University with a civil engineering degree. Crest Abbey Mausoleum. This self-guided tour packet includes a brief history of Mt. Crest Abbey, a map of the mausoleum, and the personal history of significant members of Salem’s community interred within the mausoleum. Feel free to stay as long as you like. During pre-war optimism of the early 1900s--the Progressive Era--many people believed that technology and science were advancing rapidly. This also applied to their view of burial. The modern age of the mausoleum and the “Call of a Better Way” began, even though above-ground entombment is a long-standing custom. A mausoleum is an alternative to ground burial. It offers crypts for entombment and niches for cremation. It is dry, clean and secure, and protected from the elements. Mt. Crest Abbey was built by the Portland Mausoleum Company, and its construction was completed in the spring of 1914. Mt. Crest Abbey was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30th of that year. The mausoleum is one of six similar mausoleums built by the Portland Mausoleum Company in Oregon between 1910 and 1919. The Portland Mausoleum Company went out of business in 1929--the same year that ushered in the Great Depression. Mt. Crest Abbey was designed by prominent architect Ellis Lawrence of Portland and his firm Lawrence & Holford.

    HISTORICAL and GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH SOURCES for OREGON'S SOUTH COAST Prepared by Steven Greif, Coos County Historical Society (2017) (for additions or edits to this guide, please contact the Coos History Museum) INTRODUCTION The following information is intended to be a general, preliminary guide for those persons conducting research on Coos County and south coast history and genealogy. Operating hours for libraries, courthouses, and museums vary, so call ahead for the latest information. Native Americans lived on the Oregon South Coast for thousands of years establishing a culture that continues today. Starting in 1542, European explorers began sea exploration of the area. A Hudson’s Bay Fur Company explorer, Alexander McLeod (1827) and an American fur trapper, Jedediah Smith (1828) became the first Euro-Americans to explore the region by land. The wreck of the Captain Lincoln occurred on the North Spit of Coos Bay in 1852; the following year, Empire City on Coos Bay was established as the first townsite. By December 22, 1853 Coos County was formed by the Oregon territorial legislature. The county, river, and bay took their name from the native Coos Indians and first appeared in print in the Lewis and Clark journals as “Cook-koo-oose”. The Coos County Historical Society was formed in 1891. Empire City served as the county seat from its founding until 1896, when citizens voted to move the county seat to Coquille. At various times the county economy has thrived on mining (gold/coal), shipbuilding, lumbering, agriculture, fisheries, and tourism. Over 500 cubic miles of water (a rate ten times the combined flow of all the rivers of the world) thundered toward the Pacific Ocean with flood speeds of approximately 65 miles per hour. The ice dam eventually reformed and the flooding sequence may have occurred an additional 40 different times on an average of 50 year intervals. Huge amounts of soil were stripped from lands east of the Cascades and deposited in the Pacific.
