STUDENT DAYS AT THE INNS OF COURT.* Fortescue tells us that when King John fixed the Court of Common Pleas at Westminster, the professors of the municipal law who heretofore had been scattered about the kingdom formed themselves into an aggregate body "wholly addicted to the study of the law." This body, having been excluded from Oxford and Cambridge where the civil and canon laws alone were taught, found it necessary to establish a university of its own. This it did by purchasing at various times certain houses between the City of Westminster, where the King's courts were held, and the City of London, where they could obtain their provisions. The nearest of these institutions to the City of London was the Temple. Passing through Ludgate, one came to the bridge over the Fleet Brook and continued down Fleet Street a short distance to Temple Bar where were the Middle, Inner and Outer Temples. The grounds of the Temples reached to the bank of the Thames and the barges of royalty were not infrequently seen drawn up to the landing, when kings and queens would honor the Inns with their presence at some of the elaborate revels. For at Westminster was also the Royal Palace and the Abbey, and the Thames was an easy highway from the market houses and busi- ness offices of London to the royal city of Westminster. November 2016 Zusammenfassung Ausgangspunkt dieser Arbeit ist die Annahme, dass das Spätwerk Shakespeares sich durchgängig und intensiv damit auseinandersetzt, „was es heißt zu wissen, dass andere, dass wir Körper haben“ (Stanley Cavell). Untersucht wird die Bedeutung, die ein solcher corporeal turn für die Rezeption von drei der von der Shakespeare-Forschung bisher eher vernachlässigten Romanzen hat: Pericles, The Winter’s Tale und Cymbeline. Das Augenmerk der Analyse richtet sich hierbei insbesondere auf die Art und Weise, in der sich Repräsentationen des handelnden Körpers im doppelten Sinne (action body/acting body) zur dichten textuellen und theatralischen Selbstreflexion der Stücke verhalten. Hierbei rekurriert die Analyse auf kritische Ansätze, die sich aus der neueren kulturwissenschaftlichen Diskurswende in Bezug auf Körper und Performanz ergeben. Shakespeare, Körper, Performanz Abstract Proceeding from the premise that in his late plays Shakespeare continuously engages with the question of “what it is to know that others, that we, have bodies” (Stanley Cavell), this thesis examines the significance of such a ‘corporeal turn’ for the dramatic analysis of three of Shakespeare’s late romances: Pericles, The Winter's Tale, and Cymbeline. Following in the wake of critical approaches that have emerged from a new focus of interest in the body and performance, this thesis supplements a reading of the playtext with a reading of the text in performance to illustrate how representations of the performing body are bound up with and shaped by the plays’ intense textual and theatrical self-reflection. -

Sir David Maxwell-Fyfe, K.C., M.P., London, England A TTHE present day there are many eminent lawyers who have received a part, perhaps the greater part, of their legal grounding at Oxford or Cambridge or other universities, but there was a time when no legal teaching of any consequence, except in Canon and Roman law, was obtainable anywhere outside the Inns of Court. Sir Wm. Blackstone called them "Our Judicial Univer- sity." In them were taught and trained the barristers and the judges who molded and developed the common law and the principles of equity. The Inns were not in earlier times, as they are now, inhabited merely during the daytime by lawyers and students who dispersed in all directions to their homes every night. -

They were creators and performers of plays; they frequented the theaters (especially the indoor playhouses within the liberties [Gurr 77]) as audience and routinely hired playing companies to perform in their main halls; singly and collectively they were often dedicatees of playwrights and poets; and, most relevant to my present topic, they were also creators, connoisseurs, sponsors and performers of masques. In the scholarship of early modern literature, however, the masques produced or performed by Inns of Court men are under-represented, most studies preoccupied with specimens of the genre produced in the context of the royal court with issues of high politics and religion as their subject matters. 266 Bomin Kim In the spirit of what Patricia Fumerton has usefully, if schematically, called “a new new historicism” which is “not so much ‘political’ as ‘social’ historicism” (4), this article participates in the revisionary trend in scholarship to bring due attention to the “the complexity and multifariousness of masque” (Laskowski 12) with a case study on Thomas Middleton’s Masque of Heroes, performed at the Inner Temple during the 1618/9 Christmas season.1 Masque of Heroes has been recipient of only a limited amount of critical attention from scholars, most of them stopping short at merely introducing the masque in a summary fashion. -

Was Shakespeare collaborating with an inferior playwright or playwrights? Did he allow so many corrupt printed versions of his works after 1604 out of indifference? Re-dating Pericles from the Jacobean to the Elizabethan era answers these questions and reveals previously unexamined connections between topical references in Pericles and events and personalities in the court of Elizabeth I: John Dee, Philip Sidney, Edward de Vere, and many others. The tournament impresas, alchemical symbolism of the story, and its lunar and astronomical imagery suggest Pericles was written long before 1608. Finally, Shakespeare’s focus on father-daughter relationships, and the importance of Marina, the daughter, as the heroine of the story, point to Pericles as written for a young girl. This thesis uses topical references, Shakespeare’s anachronisms, Shakespeare’s sources, stylometry and textual analysis, as well as Henslowe’s diary, the Stationers' Register, and other contemporary documentary evidence to determine whether there may have been versions of Pericles circulating before the accepted date of 1608. -

Costume alone transports the viewer to Elizabethan time. Counsel and judges, bewigged and gowned,' appear in a cloistered, re- gal setting, strewn with leather-bound books. The four Inns of Court-Lincoln's Inn, Gray's Inn, the Middle Tem- ple and the Inner Temple-may well be called one single legal univer- sity composed of four relatively independent colleges. In their long and illustrious history these Inns have discharged important func- tions in the domains of legal education and professional discipline. As the depository of splendid professional traditions which date back to the Middle Ages, they were for a long time the guardian as well as the gateway to the higher English Bar. -

Publication in REmNof yet another copy of the eight Elizabethan social dances that came to be known as `The old measures' is welcome ; a description of them as `tradi- tionally performed at the beginning of balls held at the Inns of Court in London from c 1570 to c 1675' is less welcome, since it perpetuates a misreading of the sources first made by James Cunningham in 1965 and repeated many times since .2 The Sources Between the mid-1570s and the mid-1670s, six individuals made copies of `the old measures'. Of these only Butler Buggins's copy of the eight dances, `as they were first begun and taught by Robert Holeman a Dancing-Master before 1640 and continued ever since in the Inner Temple Hall', can be directly associated with one of the Inns of Court, and then not before the 1670s when Buggins, in his capacity as Master of the Revels, was called upon to restore an old custom of ceremonial dancing discontinued during the years of the Commonwealth' Other copies of `the old measures' have dif- ferent associations . The dances in Bodleian Ms Rawl Poet 108, ff IOr-1 lr, written sometimeafter 1572, appear to be aides-mfmoire of Edward (not Elinor) Gunter, a young student of the law with a taste for ballroom dancing." Metaphor and the riddle of representation in the Historia Apollonii regis Tyri ANDREW LAIRD University of Warwick It is characteristic of philosophical writing that it must continually con- front the question of representation. Walter Benjamin, The Origin of German Tragic Drama. Aristotle says that metaphor is ‘the application of a word that belongs to another thing: either from genus to species, species to genus, species to spe- cies, or by analogy’.1 Studies of metaphors in specific texts – such as those considered in the present volume – are, on the whole, served well by the sort of definition Aristotle offers. But that Aristotelian definition, in presuppos- ing that proper names belong to their objects, raises some awkward ques- tions about naming and essence. And those questions become more threatening if the metaphors to be considered are found in fiction. Ken Dow- den’s chapter raises the possibility of fiction as a reconfiguration of the nar- ratives of our own lives, and as an instructive defamiliarisation of our own individually felt experience. This is no doubt true, but it is also disconcert- ing: if a fictional text can itself be seen as a kind of metaphor, what are the consequences for the metaphors we discern within it? The Historia Apollonii regis Tyri (History of Apollonius King of Tyre) is a late work of ancient fiction but it might serve as a useful coda to the an- cient novels preceding it in quite another way – by prompting thought about the metaphorical nature of an entire work of fiction, in tandem with the metaphors it contains. -
