However, although it has been praised for its portrayal of racial diversity, the series operates within a problematic logic of racial colour-blindness, disconnecting the main characters from any sign of racial specificity and creating a fictional world in which racism is no longer part of American society.

Reviews Comparative Film Review: The Birth of a Nation By Hector Lopez and Brittany Kelley While Hollywood has played a major role in reinventing the past to entertain their audiences, some films are meant to engage viewers in conversation about current and past events. Nate Parker – director, actor, and screen writer – created The Birth of a Nation, a film about Nat Turner’s Rebellion in 1831. He did so in order to engage his audience in a conversation about the injustices in America, his own experiences in facing injustice, and to portray a historic figure as a hero. The title of the film, also a title of a century-old silent picture, was key to Parker. He made the claim that this title would take back the history that was stolen by D.

Academy Award ® nominee Bryan Cranston, acclaimed actor and comedian Kevin Hart, and Academy Award ® Winner Nicole Kidman come together in STXfilms and Lantern Entertainment’s THE UPSIDE, an inspirational comedy based on the true-life friendship and lifelong bond forged between a wealthy man with quadriplegia and the ex-con he hires as his live- in care giver. Directed by Neil Burger (The Illusionist, Limitless), with a screenplay by Jon Hartmere, THE UPSIDE chronicles the unexpected friendship between Phillip Lacasse (Cranston), a Park Avenue billionaire left paralyzed after a paragliding accident, and ex-con Dell Scott (Kevin Hart), in need of a fresh start. Newly paroled and in desperate need of a job, Dell is frustrated by the menial opportunities available to an ex-con. After finding himself at the wrong job interview Dell uses his irreverent charisma to charm Phillip, who, despite protests from his chief-of-staff Yvonne (Nicole Kidman), offers him the home aid position. Despite a rocky start, the two quickly realize how much they can learn from each other’s experiences. From worlds apart, Phillip and Dell form an unlikely bond, bridging their differences and gaining invaluable wisdom in the process, giving each man a renewed sense of passion for all of life’s possibilities. 1 FILMMAKER’S VISION THE UPSIDE is inspired by the 2011 box office hit French film Les Intouchables. Producers Jason Blumenthal, Todd Black and Steve Tisch from Escape Artists were thrilled at the prospect of recreating the French classic, having seen it a few years back and absolutely loving the story.

  • 130Mm Tv Time Fans Cast Their Vote on the State of Diversity on Television
1 130MM TV TIME FANS CAST THEIR VOTE ON THE STATE OF DIVERSITY ON TELEVISION Television viewers are overwhelmingly voicing their desire for shows with diverse and strong characters. TV Time conducted this study to better understand how television audiences are responding to casting decisions across race, gender and sexual orientation. Gone are the days when our favorite characters were predominantly white, straight and male. A super- charged social consciousness is driving people to want to see characters on television who resemble themselves. Television is answering that call to action and fans are responding in overwhelming favor. TV Time is uniquely poised with volumes of fan data from people who have watched a television program and voted on their favorite characters in the TV Time app. For this global study, TV Time analyzed the top 100 favorite characters from 2015-2017, chosen by its community of 12 million registered app users. In an eff ort to understand how fans are reacting to diversity characters, TV Time tabulated 130 million character votes over the last three years. Acknowledging that there are several ways to segment the US population (and television characters) into diversity groups, this study focused on gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation. Overall, diversity among favorite characters remains relatively fl at over the past three years. However, some diversity groups are experiencing meaningful growth and appear to be leading the cultural movement toward embracing fundamental changes in the way we experience television. Published on April 23, 2018 2 CHARACTERS OF COLOR Overall, characters of color saw a 20% increase, jumping from 15% of the overall favorite characters in 2015, to 18% of the favorite character vote in 2017.
