BOWLED OVER IN DINAS POWYS! Apparently the game of bowls is over 600 years older than soccer or rugby. No wonder it is well represented in Dinas Powys where we have no fewer than three clubs.

The oldest is the Dinas Powys Bowling Club which shares its origins with the Tennis Club. This was founded in 1902 and has achieved great success, not only in the village but in the British Isles. Members have won over 20 Welsh and 8 British titles. The club became Welsh Champions in 1985 and 1986 and in 2010 became Welsh champions for the 4th time. Members have also held positions of responsibility both in the county and in Wales, and in 2012 one of its members will become British Isles president. Contact the President (20513743) or the secretary (20513786) Forty years ago the St. Andrews Indoor Short Mat Bowling Club was formed and meets in the Parish Hall. This, again, is a mixed club and the ladies play in a league. It is described as being “a very friendly way to exercise”. New members are welcome to give bowls a try on a Sunday afternoon (2-4pm). Contact Jennifer Morgan (01446 412976) 21 years ago saw the beginning of the Murch Bowling Club which has a membership of over 100. It has a junior section (ages 10-16) and people play competitive bowls into their 90‟s. Contact the secretary (20515568) All three clubs welcome men and ladies alike and are very pleased to provide coaching to those who wish to learn. Children are especially encouraged to try their skill.

“FLAGTASTIC FAIRTRADE” On Saturday 12th March, the Fairtrade village of Dinas Powys held a flagtastic event. An army of volunteers and Fairtrade campaigners paraded a 168 metre crocodile of Fairtrade bunting through the village. The unfurling of the flags took place just after 10 o‟clock, at the Cenotaph, in the village. The organisers were hoping to have enough to go right around the village green. However, when the last flag had emerged from the crate, the bunting had been snaked around the village green two and a half times! The bunting was then carried on a circular route from the village square, down Station Road, to Cardiff Road, passed Dinas Powys train station and then up Elm Grove Road. Finally, the volunteers were treated to a refreshing cup of Fairtrade tea or coffee and biscuits at the Methodist Church. Many people attended the event. When interviewed, Assembly Member Chris Franks and local councillor Val Hartrey said they had enjoyed a lovely morning. Chris Franks said, “I am very pleased with Fairtrade chocolate!” Three PCSOs from Llantwit Major attended to ensure the event ran smoothly and safely. They were impressed with the number of people who were supporting Fairtrade and they thought the flags were so beautiful they should be framed afterwards! Many local groups, including churches, clubs, schools and playgroups, supported the event by decorating 728 flags, with Fairtrade messages and symbols, for the long line of bunting. Each flag was uniquely designed, on triangular shaped Fairtrade cotton, using a variety of materials, including paint, felt pens, sequins, glitter, feathers, beads, jewels, pipe cleaners, wool and thread. The brightly coloured display showed the creativity of the people in the local community. Sue Hamer, Chairwoman of the Dinas Powys Fairtrade group, said, “We are hoping to remind people that Dinas Powys is a Fairtrade village and that they should be proud of it.” The flags will now be sent to the Fairtrade Foundation in London to help to try and break the Guinness World Record attempt for the longest continuous flag bunting. The aim is to highlight the plight of cotton farmers from poorer countries, who face injustice and unfair practices. We have certainly put Dinas Powys on the Fairtrade map! Rebekah West (Age 11)
