2 /72 2 /72 1.0 EU president upbeat over Canada trade deal despite Belgian opposition (11.99/13) The European Union (EU) and Canada have tried to remain upbeat about the prospects for their trans- Atlantic free trade pact despite a small Belgian region persisting in its refusal to back the deal.

After the setback early on Monday, EU President Donald Tusk and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke by telephone, with Mr Tusk saying afterwards "there's yet time" to find a compromise solution.

A joint summit for signing the long-delayed trade deal is scheduled for Thursday, offering the two leaders and Belgian officials little time to persuade the Wallonia region to drop its opposition.

Without all Belgian regions supporting the agreement, Belgium cannot sign and the EU needs unanimity from all of its 28 member states.

"We think Thursday's summit still possible," Mr Tusk said in a Twitter message. "We encourage all parties to find a solution. "

The EU's inability to sign would be a major embarrassment and undermine the belief that the world's biggest trading bloc is a trustworthy partner as it seeks similar deals with nations like the US and Japan.

Prospects for a signing ceremony on Thursday looked as good as dead on Monday afternoon when Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel admitted he could not get unanimity in the country's regions and legislatures.

"We have been asked to give a clear answer today," on whether Belgium could sign up as the last of 28 member states," Mr Michel said after meeting with Wallonia leader Paul Magnette. "The clear answer, at this stage, is no. "

Even though Mr Michel is eager to sign the deal, Belgium's constitutional set-up means every single region in the country needs to back it, not only the national government.

As a result, opposition from a region of 3.5 million could now stop a deal between more than 500 million EU citizens and 35 million Canadians.

The EU's executive Commission called for patience in an attempt to save the free trade deal and had already dismissed a Monday-night deadline as counter-productive.

Mr Magnette insisted he would agree to nothing under the threat of an ultimatum but remained open to further talks. The EU Commission, which has negotiated the deal on behalf of the 28 nations, insisted this week's summit was not the final deadline.

"Now, we need patience," EU Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said. "The commission traditionally does not set deadlines or ultimatums. "

Even if Thursday's summit has to be called off, it could always be rescheduled when Wallonia has signed on to the agreement, Mr Schinas indicated.

Politicians in Wallonia argue the proposed Ceta accord (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) would undermine labour, the environment and consumer standards.

Proponents say it would yield billions in added trade through tariff cuts and other measures to lower barriers to commerce.

3 /72 1.8 Jared Fogle's Ex-Wife Files Suit, Says Subway Knew His 'Depravities and Failed to Act' (8.87/13) The ex-wife of former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle filed a lawsuit today against the sandwich chain, claiming the company knew of Fogle's "depravities and failed to act. "

Fogle's ex-wife Katie McLaughlin said she filed the suit to seek unspecified damages and because she has "questions to which I have no other way to get answers. "

"What did Subway know and when did they know it? " she read from a statement today at a press conference. "What investigations, if any, did they conduct? Did they ever notify the authorities? " Fogle, who worked with Subway from 2000 to 2015, is currently in federal prison after pleading guilty to in November of 2015 to charges of possessing child pornography and traveling across state lines to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor. He is serving 15 years.

McLaughlin said in a statement today, "When the FBI banged on my door on July 7th, 2015, I thought it was the worst day of my life. I had no idea that the nightmare was just beginning. "

She maintains that, had Subway warned her of Fogle's propensities, she would have never married him. She said she learned the scope of his activities over the course of the investigation.

"Finding out that your husband and the father of your children is a child predator, and knowing that his job involved him visiting schools on a regular basis is devastating," she said, adding, "to the victims of my ex-husband, you are never far from my thoughts and prayers. "

The complaint, filed in Indiana with the Hamilton County Superior Court, cites several instances where McLoughlin claims Subway was told of alleged wrong-doing by Fogle, dating back to four years before she met him, that she claims Subway failed to act upon. "Upon information and belief, Subway did not report any of the allegations to law enforcement," the suit says.

5 /72 6.2 Oxford says Shakespeare will share credit for 'Henry VI'

(6.45/13) LONDON (AP) — The Bard was not a solo act. Oxford University Press’ new edition of William Shakespeare’s works will credit Christopher Marlowe as co-author of the three Henry VI plays, underscoring that the playwright collaborated with others on some of his most famous works.

Marlowe, a playwright, poet and spy, will share billing in the latest version of the New Oxford Shakespeare being published this week. While scholars have long suspected that Shakespeare’s plays included the work of others, new analytical methods helped researchers conclude that sections bore the hallmarks of Marlowe’s hand.

“Shakespeare, like other geniuses, recognized the value of other people,” Gary Taylor, a professor at Florida State University and the principal investigator of the new work, said Monday. “What is Shakespeare famous for? Writing dialogue — interactions between two people. You would expect in his life there would be dialogue with other people.”

A team of 23 international scholars looked afresh at the man many consider the greatest writer in the English language. The challenge, put simply: If one is going to compile the complete works of Shakespeare one first has to determine what they are.

Five of the world’s most senior Shakespeare scholars — Taylor, Hugh Craig at the University of Newcastle in Australia, MacDonald P. Jackson at the University of Auckland in New Zealand; Gabriel Egan at De Montfort University, Leicester and John Jowett of the Shakespeare Institute at the University of Birmingham — had to be convinced of the issues of authorship in the works.

The editors concluded that 17 of 44 works associated with Shakespeare had input from others. The scholars used computerized data sets to reveal patterns, trends and associations — analyzing not only Shakespeare’s words, but also those of his contemporaries.

In Shakespeare’s time, there was an insatiable demand for new material to feed the appetite of the first mass entertainment industry. A relatively small group of people — a cabal of sorts who knew one another — worked feverishly to meet this demand. Taylor compared them to screenwriters in the early days of Hollywood.

To study them, the team of scholars used what Taylor described as the analytic equivalent of combining voice recognition, fingerprints and DNA testing — looking for patterns to see how various authors and playwrights wrote and worked.

“Shakespeare has now entered the world of big data,” Taylor said, adding that while the bard’s work has been studied intensively, that’s not always the case in the same measure for other writers of his generation.

Still, he was adamant that this wasn’t just a case of “computers telling us things.” One needs to ask the right question.

“What you need is a method that treats all the writers as the same and try to identify in an empirical way what distinguishes him as a writer — what makes him different than the others,” he said.

Marlowe, born in 1564, the same year as Shakespeare, was a graduate of Cambridge University who wrote poetry and plays such as the two part “Tamburlaine” and “Dido, Queen of Carthage.” A part-time spy for the government of Queen Elizabeth I, Marlowe is believed to have died in 1593 when he was stabbed under mysterious circumstances.

Oxford University Press says that “identifying Marlowe’s hand in the Henry VI plays is just one of the fresh features of this project.”

The authorship of Shakespeare’s works has long been disputed, with one now-discredited theory being that philosopher Sir Francis Bacon is the true author of the works. But Bacon is only mentioned in the forward of this volume. His authorship, Taylor said, is “just a wonderful story.”

6 /72 1.7 Is Trump's conspiracy narrative on the media dangerous? (5.65/13) Since the second presidential debate, Republican candidate Donald Trump has gone from a dead heat with Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton to trailing her in public approval ratings.

Part of this is doubtless due to recent allegations against Trump of misogyny and sexual assault. First came the 2005 audio clip of Trump speaking lewdly about women before the debate. Then, after the debate, many women came forward to contradict Trump’s claims that his “locker room talk” was simply words and he’d never assaulted anyone.

Trump has denied the accusations against him, but since the debate and his slide in the polls, he’s also turned up the heat on his offensive against the news media, alleging that news outlets (along with fictional wide-scale voter fraud ) are “rigging” the election in Clinton’s favor.

“The election is absolutely being rigged by the dishonest and distorted media pushing Crooked Hillary,” Trump tweeted recently.

While on the campaign trail, Trump has claimed the media is “poisoning the minds” of voters with false information, lumping an unfavorable "Saturday Night Live" impersonation of him as part of the conspiracy against him.

Political candidates touting media bias in a struggling campaign is nothing new. But Trump’s refrain of media “rigging” the election has taken on new menace, as The New York Times reported journalists being met with booing, jeers and threats of violence at Trump rallies.

And with Trump’s help, more people believe the media is somehow steering the election, which is dangerous, the Times’ Jim Rutenberg argued.

“It’s a pretty sweeping generalization. But a considerable percentage of the country believes it. An even larger percentage of Mr. Trump’s voters do,” Rutenberg wrote. “In effect, he is painting (reporters) as traitors.”

It’s true that much of the media coverage of Trump hasn’t always been fair or flattering, given that some media outlets like the Huffington Post flatly refused to cover his campaign seriously at all. Trump’s rhetoric that the news media is poisoning the public against him is certainly a problem for the news business because he, as a presidential candidate, offers a prominent voice to the dwindling number of Americans (about 32 percent , according to Gallup) who say they trust the news media.

But The Atlantic’s Conor Friedersdorf argues that Trump’s conspiracy theory is balderdash not because media bias doesn’t exist, but because Trump skillfully confuses and confounds the media. Trump’s strategy, Friedersdorf says, is to make a questionable statement (such as President Barack Obama being the “founder of ISIS”), standing behind it as fact, and then lashing out at the media, whether their response is judgment or simply fact-checking.

“All this deliberate, mendacious gamesmanship puts journalists in a very tricky position,” Friedersdorf wrote . “The driver of flawed (Trump) coverage is a candidate who deliberately uses inapt, misleading words to spread falsehoods, all with the express intention of generating outraged media attention.”

For the public, Trump’s claims that the media are not to be believed is also dangerous, as media watchdog group Media Matters vice president Angelo Carusone pointed out last year. Carusone used Trump’s generalization that illegal immigrants were disease-spreading drug dealers and rapists as an example.

“Fast-forward to when immigration is back on the table and someone brings up the infectious disease myth — now we have to tackle this problem with that idea in our head,” Carusone said . “Once misinformation is injected into regular conversation, it just makes cutting to the main issue that much harder.”

More troubling still is that even if Trump loses the election, there are signs that his brand of hyperbole and media confusion will remain in the public spotlight long after Nov. 8.

Vanity Fair reported in June that Trump is looking to create his own media empire, after becoming “irked by his ability to create revenue for other media organizations without being able to take a cut himself.”

Trump has surrounded himself with media influencers who act as advisers, including former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes and Breitbart News leader Stephen Bannon. Recently Financial Times reported that Trump’s son-in-law, New York Observer publisher Jared Kushner, has met with financial advisors about acquiring a cable channel for the venture.

While some, like The Atlantic, think Trump’s success as a media mogul is somewhat unlikely, The Times’ Rutenberg worried about the press’ future if it continues to ignore the power of Trump’s philosophy on the American public.

“American newsrooms will be making a big mistake — and missing a huge continuing story — if they fail to adjust their coverage to better illuminate the concerns of Mr. Trump’s supporters well beyond Election Day,” Rutenberg wrote.

Looking at it that way, it’s not far-fetched to think that Trump might not only be cultivating a groundswell of supporters with his campaign, but a loyal audience, ready to deepen their understanding of Trump’s often-erroneous claims, as they are now, on TV.

"Of course he wants an Emmy," Oliver said. "It's a woman, it's gold, and it's proportionate to his tiny hands. "

Oliver's offer came after Trump's old claims that the Emmys were rigged -- explaining why his reality show, "The Apprentice," didn't win -- were brought up in the final presidential debate last week in relation to Trump's equally dubious talk about the upcoming election possibly being rigged against him.

Oliver, who won for Outstanding Variety Talk Series in September, portrayed the offer as a way to get Trump to accept an election loss while not feeling like a loser. (Plus, it's another way for Oliver to tease one of his favorite targets.)

Oliver then teased Trump by bringing out his Emmy from under his desk.

10 /72 2.6 Jay Z and LeBron will likely appear side by side at concert for Hillary Clinton (3.09/13) In what could be the most A-list campaign trail showing yet, rapper Jay Z is expected to perform at a concert in Cleveland, Ohio, on behalf of Hillary Clinton. Buzzfeed first reported the news, citing three sources close to the Democratic nominee's campaign. A Democratic source also told the website that Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, who endorsed Clinton at the beginning of the month, will likely appear. Scroll down for video While the Clinton campaign has announced a number of 'Love Trumps Hate' concerts that are supposed to motivate certain blocs of voters – such as one with Jennifer Lopez this Saturday in Miami – this show will be the first to specifically target the young black voters. If Clinton can motivate enough black voters, and especially young black voters, to get to the polls in this swing state, which has been friendly to rival Donald Trump for most of this cycle, she'll be able to easily win the White House over the billionaire. Trump needs to run the table in Ohio, Florida and also Pennsylvania if he expects to win on November 8. Jay Z, and his powerhouse wife Beyonce, endorsed Clinton as their presidential pick months ago. The couple has performed for the Democrats before, with Jay Z doing a concert with Bruce Springsteen during President Obama's re-election bid. Beyonce infamously lip-synced the national anthem at Obama's inauguration the next year. Both Jay Z and Beyonce have spoken out and sung about police violence against black Americans a topic Democrats have embraced and Republicans have pushed back against using slogans like 'Blue Lives Matter' and 'All Lives Matter,' instead of 'Black Lives Matter.' Beyond the Jay Z and J Lo shows, band members of The National will perform a concert in their hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. Jon Bon Jovi, who stumped for Clinton in his native New Jersey during the Democratic primary and performed at Bill Clinton's Clinton Global Initiative in September in New York, is slated to play two shows, one in Pittsburgh this Thursday and another in Tampa on the Saturday before election day. This weekend, the Clinton campaign deployed pop star Katy Perry to Nevada to help young people early vote. Pop star Miley Cyrus knocked on dorm room door's in Northern Virginia as well. 11 /72 0.4 Time Warner banks on Delaware's new distaste for shareholder suits: Frankel (2.64/13) By Alison Frankel NEW YORK Oct 24 (Reuters) - On Monday, Time Warner filed a disclosure at the Securities and Exchange Commission of its $85 billion merger agreement with AT&T. The SEC filing includes a provision notifying investors that Time Warner amended its bylaws over the weekend to direct all shareholder litigation to Delaware Chancery Court. That forum selection clause, as such provisions are known, is a very good way to restrict scrutiny of the $85 billion deal by the plaintiffs' bar. Shareholder lawyers I talked to Monday about the Time Warner deal - and the other just-announced mergers buoying the stock market - seemed almost wistful about how difficult it has become to litigate M&A class actions in Delaware Chancery Court. You can be sure some investor will file a class action challenging AT&T's takeover of Time Warner. As Fordham law professor Sean Griffith told me Monday, Time Warner's decision to reach a deal with AT&T without seeking competing bids is an open invitation for plaintiffs' lawyers to argue that shareholders aren't getting a fair price. But according to three top-notch plaintiffs' lawyers who talked to me on background, a series of recent decisions from the Delaware Supreme Court and Chancery Court has made it much tougher for investors to police corporate boards and advisers, to block shareholder votes on deals involving a single bidder and to recover damages for disclosure violations if shareholders have voted in favor of a merger. The net effect of this recent precedent, they said, is to encourage shareholders to file M&A class actions in federal court, alleging violations of federal disclosure laws, rather than bringing fiduciary duty suits in Delaware. These lawyers weren't even talking about Chancery Court's celebrated 2015 crackdown on "deal tax" settlements. You probably remember that Delaware judges acted in concert to squelch M&A class action settlements in which corporations received broad releases from shareholder claims in exchange for additional, often immaterial, proxy disclosures. Chancery Court's refusal to sign off on six- or seven-figure fees for plaintiffs' lawyers who negotiated disclosure-only settlements has already sharply reduced the number of M&A challenges filed in Delaware. According to a Cornerstone Research study published this summer, nearly two-thirds of all deals valued at more than $100 million still provoked shareholder litigation, but that's way down from the 2013 peak of 94 percent - and shareholder lawyers are much more likely to file investor suits outside of Delaware. (Thus explaining Time Warner's new forum selection clause.) MORE SHAREHOLDER ROADBLOCKS For all of the attention paid to the clampdown on disclosure-only settlements, the Delaware Supreme Court's 2015 opinion in Corwin v. KKR may turn out to have been a more important disincentive for shareholder lawyers to sue in Chancery Court. In the Corwin decision, written by Chief Justice Leo Strine, the state supreme court held that if a deal is approved by "fully informed, uncoerced" shareholders, the board's actions during the sale process should be reviewed under the extremely forgiving business judgment standard. Effectively, the Corwin ruling spelled the end of post-closing damages claims in deals shareholders voted to approve. In a much-discussed decision earlier this month, for example, Vice-Chancellor Joseph Slights dismissed a shareholder class action against board members of OM Group, a specialty chemical company bought out by the private equity firm Apollo in 2015. Plaintiffs alleged the board sold the company on the cheap to avoid the "embarrassment and aggravation" of agitation by an activist investor, ignoring the advice of OM's own financial adviser, who said shareholders would obtain maximum value if the company were broken up and sold in pieces. The judge said that however "disquieting" the allegations, plaintiffs failed to allege that the board withheld material information from shareholders, 89 percent of whom voted in favor of the buyout. Under Corwin, Vice-Chancellor Slights found, OM directors are in the clear. In another interpretation of Corwin, Chancellor Andre Bouchard in August dismissed post-closing breach-of-duty claims against board members of C&J Energy Services, acquired by Nabors Industries in 2015. The plaintiffs alleged that C&J didn't disclose a competing bid (among other supposed disclosure failures) so shareholders were not actually informed at the time they voted to approve the deal. The chancellor held plaintiffs waited too long to allege the disclosure violations, which they should have raised before the shareholder vote. The message to plaintiffs' lawyers, in other words, is that the only way to win an M&A challenge in Delaware is to come up with evidence of serious disclosure violations in a short time frame. But plaintiffs' lawyers say Chancery Court judges are simultaneously tightening the standard for expedited discovery in M&A cases, stripping them of the tools to obtain that evidence. SEE YOU IN FEDERAL COURT The answer, they say, may be to stop litigating M&A challenges as fiduciary duty cases in Delaware and instead start asserting violations of federal securities law, which, after all, prohibits corporations from making false or misleading proxy filings. Cornerstone's study this summer detected an early move for M&A class actions from Delaware to federal court. Decisions like C&J Energy and OM Group will probably hasten that move. So look for shareholders to sue Time Warner in federal court, and to argue that a class action asserting only a cause of action under federal law is not subject to the company's forum selection clause. 12 /72 1.5 Red blood, blue blood: How do we begin to heal after Clinton vs. Trump? (2.42/13) Embed

Share

How is America ever going to begin to heal after this divisive election?

Every presidential contest leaves scars, especially as the margin of victory has become ever thinner in recent years. The 2000 election, after all, took weeks to decide.

Still, the wounds seem deeper this year. If Donald Trump loses, what happens to his supporters, many of them angry white men who already believe they have been left behind? And if Hillary Clinton loses, what happens to her supporters, including many frustrated minorities who feel under assault and women who had hoped to break a huge glass ceiling?

Elections don’t cause divisions so much as they focus attention on them and prompt the question: Where as a nation do we go from here?

To start probing that question, USA TODAY asked reporters on four continents to write about elections that have deeply split their countries, and then to speak to a participant in the political events to offer some suggestions on how a nation heals — or why it doesn't.

USA TODAY

'SNL' recap: Trump doesn't accept election results there, either

In some cases, they suggested what the U. S. should do, starting the morning after. In others, they suggested what we should not do. Sure, dialogue is great, but action — sometimes painful, such as conceding an election or facing an ugly past — is needed, too. Here is their advice, along with some cautionary tales. One overarching theme: If we don't do something about the chasm, it will get worse, challenging institutions and eating at the basic core of what makes us a nation. The comments have been edited for brevity.

The United Kingdom's 52%-to-48% vote on June 23 to exit the European Union ripped the nation apart. It pitted regions, communities and even family members against one another. It also created a sharp generational divide between young adults who strongly favored remaining in the EU and seniors who voted overwhelmingly to leave.

Those who voted against Brexit believed the alliance would ensure stability and growth for the U. K.'s economy, protect decades of social justice and welfare reform, and promote British interests on a range of issues from security to trade to influence on the world stage. Many of those who supported Brexit were motivated by frustration with a partnership that they did not believe understands their concerns about immigration, security and self-determination. They see the EU as a labyrinthine, elitist and remote institution in Brussels that gives ordinary Britons little say on how to regulate their country. "Take back control" became the rallying cry of the Brexit campaign and its supporters' growing hostility to the central tenet of the EU: the free movement of labor, capital, goods and services within the 28-nation bloc.

The vote forced Prime Minister David Cameron, a Brexit opponent, to resign. His successor, Theresa May, appears to be in no hurry to begin the divorce proceedings. And the country remains sharply divided over prospects for its future

USA TODAY

'Hard Brexit' could cost U. K. $81 billion a year

Here are two views from prominent Brexit activists on how the nation can reunite following such a divisive vote.

"The vote to leave the European Union was a great exercise in democracy. It doesn't do any harm to those who got used to running things to be kicked in the pants and told 'not this time.' Those who voted to remain in the EU have been appalled by the idea that the decision was taken by people that they don't ever see or speak to, in places they don't ever go to, and they universally refer to them as too old, too poor, too stupid.

"What the referendum exposed is that post-2008 — after the financial crisis — there were many issues that got swept under the carpet and still had not been dealt with: People in lower-income groups whose wages have not risen and in some cases have fallen. Migration from countries in Eastern Europe driving wages down and damaging lives and communities. There's whole groups in society who feel that the people who got them into the mess never really faced up to it or paid a penance. The referendum exposed the perception that we're all in this together. Some people got away with it.

"I think what you're seeing in the United States with Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is a similar process. Because the referendum was such an important vote, people got very attached to the outcome. They'll move on. Things will settle. They already have. There are some still determined to put a stop to things but amid the general public there is recognition that a decision was made and now we need to get on with it.

"There is a more important issue that has come out of this, and that was not so apparent before: We need to do something about the level of inequality in this country. This is not about socialism or communism but about making a kind of capitalism that also works for people at the bottom end of society. "

"After every election, whether it's a general election or a referendum, there is always going to potentially be a bit of a schism in society. What we're finding is that a lot of the 'Remain' voters now accept the result and want the government to make the best job of it. I think the healing process has begun. USA TODAY

Brexit leader Farage has 'lessons' for Trump, GOP

"In some ways the election in the United Sates is more divisive then our referendum, and the differences are more stark. But the 'project fear' that we saw used against Brexit is now exactly the same tool that is being used against Donald Trump. If Trump were to win, it would be for him to disprove the doubters by showing that he's not the kind of guy that would lead the U. S. into ridiculous foreign wars and that he has a genuine agenda that will put the interests of the American people first. He will have to do that in the first 100 days and if he does that then there will be a consensus behind the fact that he won a democratic election.

"In the U. K., we were told that Brexit would mean the economy would fall off a cliff, that every single sector would crash and burn. Instead, what we've seen this past summer is the best season for British hotels and restaurants for 20 years. I would suggest that's pretty good data to show that ordinary people are not panicking about this. Of course there's things to sort, the relationship with the European Union and the rest of the world. There will be ups and downs. But the key issue is this: Is there anything to be scared of? No, not really.

"As Abraham Lincoln said: 'You can't please all the people all the time.' And there are some people who would have been irreconcilable to the result whichever way it went. But now a very significant chunk of 'Remain' voters are accepting the situation, are saying it was a democratic vote, are not asking for a second referendum and are encouraged by the early signs of the economic benefits. "

South Africa’s long racially divided political history made a historic breakthrough when Nelson Mandela became the country’s first black and democratically elected president in 1994, following the dissolution of the white minority-led apartheid state.

Today, the country remains torn by a deep economic gulf between rich and poor. Many residents say the government's promise of better homes and jobs has not materialized amid high unemployment and corruption scandals. Meanwhile, the elite, made up of all races, are flaunting their wealth. And racial divides continue to exist, as was recently seen in headlines around the world after black pupils in the capital Pretoria accused their school of discrimination because they were forced to chemically straighten their hair.

South Africa’s ruling party suffering biggest electoral blow

Mandela’s party, the ruling African National Congress (ANC), dominated the country's politics for two decades, buoyed by its vital role in securing majority rule. But the tide turned in August, when it lost control of power for the first time in Johannesburg, the country’s largest city, where the opposition Democratic Alliance prevailed in local elections. It was the worst loss ever for Mandela's party.

One reason for the ANC's setback is public anger that has mounted over President Jacob Zuma’s involvement in various scandals since he came to power in 2009. One of the biggest controversies involves more than $20 million of taxpayers’ money spent to remodel his private home in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal province. Zuma’s office said he recently paid back more than $500,000 of the cost. As dissatisfaction with the ANC grows among previous supporters, the country could face another period of bitter political discord leading up to the presidential election in 2019.

"The U. S. election draws up some unique things that are quite different from some of the challenges others have faced. There are similarities — nativism and narrow nationalism. If Trump is elected, I think that it will be seismic. It’s partly a guess that Hillary’s going to be president and how will she heal all the damage that’s been done by Trump?... The U. S. is a very divided society.

"The most important healing is when very many people feel they are being disenfranchised. How do you address that? Of course, this is not easy work but essential to do if the levels of fragmentation in the U. S. are not to continue further.

"South Africa had to come out of a legacy of institutionalized racism which was enshrined in the governance of our country for many decades. The way we tried to deal with it was we set up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission after the first democratic election which was chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who brought the nation together in a very painful conversation.

"It was not a perfect process, it did not do the full job but it did actually lay the basis for a very open conversation about how do you place blame, how do you move beyond blame and how do you move toward healing?

"Having lived (in the United States) I do not believe it has done nearly enough to deal with its legacies of injustice.

"America must deal with its past in the way that South Africa tried to deal with the legacies of injustice via the Trust and Reconciliation process. The two historical legacies that the U. S. must deal with are its dispossession and genocide of the original peoples of North America. ... The other legacy is that of slavery. Dealing with past injustices with honesty, dignity and compassion is the basis for moving forward.

"Dealing with historical injustices is a key part of healing and moving forward. Of course, this is not easy work but essential to do if the level of fragmentation in the U. S. is not to continue further. "

Andrés Manuel López Obrador lost Mexico’s 2006 presidential election by less than 1 percentage point. He alleged electoral fraud, paralyzed central Mexico City with protests and later proclaimed himself the legitimate president. Partisans tried to physically prevent election winner Felipe Calderón from taking the oath of office in Congress.

A decade later, Mexico is still suffering the consequences of an election the left-wing politician never conceded. He often talks of the system being rigged against him, and supporters contend that their opponents — people the two-time presidential candidate calls “the Mafia in power” — poisoned the well by branding him in attack ads “a danger for Mexico.”

Analysts say López Obrador, who argued Mexico was in need of radical change, was unwilling to put aside personal ambition for the good of the nation, as U. S. presidential candidates Richard Nixon and Al Gore did after losing close elections in 1960 and 2000. “That was the key to maintaining civility in the U. S. and not maintaining it in Mexico,” said Jorge Castañeda, Mexican foreign minister from 2000 to 2003. “This has always been the main issue in Mexico, not the ideological or political or even personal animosity.”

USA TODAY

More criticism for Mexico's president after Trump visit

The immediate political fallout was Mexico’s war on drugs, Castañeda said. Calderón sought to increase his incoming government’s legitimacy by cracking down on drug cartels, a rising threat as he took office that dominated his presidency. Today, soldiers are still in the streets and more than 100,000 lives have been lost.

Mexico also rewrote its election laws in 2007 to give political parties more power and to avoid another divisive political climate by banning negative ads and limiting the political speech of non-politicians.

Castañeda says candidates should promise to accept any outcome, even an unfavorable one, to avoid a rerun of Mexico’s problems. López Obrador "didn’t accept the rules after the fact,” he says. “This is what led to the division and bitterness.”

"There wasn’t much to celebrate (during President Calderón's inauguration.) The political parties did nothing to show the citizenry that we had to unite. Celebrating did nothing to help or close wounds. To the contrary, it exacerbated the conflict.

“We had six years of permanent conflict in this country. We saw it in Congress. It’s something that got into Mexicans’ heart and it’s still there. The problem is that in the healing process, society, like the political parties, hasn’t been able to agree or find a way to heal.

“The profile of these two candidates caused the tension to continue. They were both stubborn and their close people were the same.

“The U. S. has advantages. There’s a deeply rooted idea of solidarity. It’s an important part of U. S society, but not ours. The United States has strong institutions, while in Mexico, civil society is weak. It’s something that they are going to have to take advantage of now.

Mexico City museum takes on Donald Trump

"The main conflict is between politicians, but what is said between ‘professional’ politicians isn’t translated the same way down below by ordinary people.

“This strong discourse from Donald Trump, how is it interpreted? The interpretation of this message at the grass roots is different from how it’s discussed among politicians on the national level. The strong statements are taken more seriously down below. This discourse of resentment is much more grave. This is what we have seen in Mexico after the (2006) election and so many years of division.”

Share Berlusconi became Italy's dominant politician, serving as prime minister for nine of 17 years and serving as a vocal opposition figure when he was out of office. But his governments were increasingly dogged by personal legal problems, scandal, cronyism and inefficiencies. And Italy became increasingly polarized by those who loved and hated him.

By the time, Berlusconi resigned in 2011, he had become highly unpopular. Italy’s credit rating had been downgraded multiple times, the economy was contracting, the political system had stalled and the country was on the verge of defaulting on its public debt.

The man Italians finally chose to end the political divisiveness and fix things was Mario Monti, a well-regarded economist and former European commissioner who had until then rejected overtures to get involved in politics. But, he said, “I really didn’t think I could say 'no' because the crisis had grown so dire. If would have said ‘no’ I would have had to leave Italy for the rest of my life because I would have been so ashamed.”

USA TODAY

Italians to Americans: Beware of Trump-like candidates

In an interview, Monti said he was able to leverage the country's financial crisis to get the various sides talking. He doled out what he called an “even degree of unhappiness, well measured” for everyone. “The political parties, the social partners and trade unions were ready to accept temporary sacrifices that would have been otherwise unthinkable.”

The plan mostly worked. Monti, more a technocrat than a politician, served for nearly 18 months. By the time he left, the economy had stabilized, interest rates were low and the risk of default had been avoided.

“When I took control of the government there were three emergencies, really. One was the financial situation and the risk of default. Another one was the growing gap between public opinion on the one hand and the politicians on the other. And the third — within the political class, within the parties in the parliament — was that there was no compromise.

“The center-right, headed by Mr. Berlusconi, and the center-left, headed by Mr. (Pier Luigi) Bersani wouldn’t even speak to each other. The situation was such that people, from the man on the street to the international financial press, the other capitals, were all worried that the Italian state might not be able to pay salaries and pay pensions. And we had in front of us the devastating example of Greece.

"What helped was this financial emergency, the sense of acute emergency, made all the politicians feel powerless. But on the other hand, it made the political parties, the social partners and trade unions ready to accept temporary sacrifices that would have been otherwise unthinkable. And I was leveraging on this basis.

“I am sure I would not have been the one called to do the job (if there were only a political crisis). The country needed somebody who because of past experience — and I hope some accumulated credibility — whose mere appointment would help calm the markets and collect a high degree of (international) support. “It would have been unimaginable for me to be asked to be only a political healer of the country.” Embed

In 2003, Turkish voters elected Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the new leadership began moving the country gradually away from its past, one marked by the rule of the secularist Kemalists. Since the 1920s, they tried to homogenize Turkey’s multicultural society by suppressing religious and cultural expression to erase the influence of the country’s Ottoman legacy.

Over the following decade under the AKP, religious conservatism became stamped on Turkey's political and social landscape. Minorities, such as the Kurds, as well as leftists and those leading a secular and liberal lifestyle, were left chafing under increasing restrictions on civil freedoms. By 2013, that group expanded to include activists, journalists, artists — anyone who openly opposed the government's policies. The climax came that year, when protests over the government's construction project at Istanbul's Gezi Park led to a crackdown in which 11 were killed and 8,000 injured.

Many Turks, including conservatives, were shocked. As a result, Turkish voters punished the AKP in 2015 by denying it a majority in parliament. It was a serious blow to the party. Besides concern over the crackdown and earlier edicts restricting basic freedoms, voters were worried about slowing economic growth and the civil war in neighboring Syria that sent a flood of refugees into Turkey. The final straw was Erdoğan's heavy-handed attempt to make himself president for life by amending the constitution.

Just months after the elections, however, a cease-fire with Kurdish separatists fell apart, reigniting fighting in the decades-old conflict. Also, the Islamic State set off bombs in Ankara, the capital, killing 90 young people during a protest. It was the country's worst terror attack.

USA TODAY

Turkey extends state of emergency by 3 more months

On Nov. 1, voters, concerned about the situation, voted overwhelmingly for Erdoğan's party based on its vow to restore peace and stability. Yet, right after that victory Erdoğan and his party resumed their policies that have divided Turks along religious and ethnic lines and pitted urban against rural interests.

Today, the fault lines have only increased in the wake of more than a dozen terror attacks and the summer's attempted coup, which the government blames on U. S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen. Tens of thousands of civil servants, military personnel and educators have been arrested, and there has been a crackdown on the media.

“In a world where there’s so much happening, so fast, where there’s the fear that the next terror attack could happen any time, in a world where you see lots of displacement (of refugees), many people fear that the future is going to be very ambivalent.

"Where they make a mistake is to think that if they close the doors, if they live in smaller tribal communities, they’ll feel safer. That, I think, is an illusion. But the fear itself is real, and we have to understand that. "We are mostly divided into invisible ghettos, islands of people that do not break bread together. In such an environment it's much more difficult to cultivate a culture of coexistence and remind people of our shared values. For me, those shared values have to revolve around democratic values.

"Because the number of people who are saying 'maybe democracy is not the only way' and 'maybe it's not suitable for our culture' is increasing, those alternative models could be authoritarian models. So we have to renew people's faith in democracy. I think we need to revive a radical humanism that shows people what they have in common and not focus only on the differences.

"What I’m worried about today is the rise of populism, the rise of tribalism, the rise of a new way of doing politics that is very much based on emotions and people’s fear. We need to understand what people are afraid of and why are they so anxious about the future. We should never belittle fear or anxiety.

USA TODAY

Purge of Turkey coup supporters intensifies

"But also all around the world, I think we see more and more angry white male politicians speaking very loudly, making general statements and appealing to the feelings of the masses. This is a very dangerous trend. Because we are living in a globalized world, the madness happening in one country has repercussions beyond the borders. That's why we need to promote cosmopolitanism. If we learn anything, we learn it from people who are different from us.

"For extremism to work, (populists) need to dehumanize 'the other.' Fiction rehumanizes. Fiction tells us that the person you saw as 'the other' has a story. If you know that person's story, you can connect with that person's sorrow or hopes. In a world of so much conflict, we need the art of story telling like never before. "

The Philippine presidential election in May didn’t create sharp divisions as much as it uncovered them in a population that is fractured along class, cultural and geographic lines.

In some ways, the political landscape mirrored the United States. Former Vice President Jejomar Binay and Interior Secretary Mar Roxas offered continuity with the policies of outgoing President Benigno Aquino III, whose six-year term saw the Philippines emerge as one of the best-performing economies in Asia.

By contrast, a desire for radical upheaval was embodied in Rodrigo Duterte, the brash mayor of Davao, a city on the southern island of Mindanao far from the power corridors of the capital, Manila. Duterte, whose nicknames include "The Punisher" and "Duterte Harry," ran on a platform of law and order, vowing to tackle crime and drugs and clean up a corrupt and elitist government.

USA TODAY For Duterte, outrageous comments have become the norm

Duterte made headlines around the world with crude comments and campaign promises to kill tens of thousands of criminals and dump their bodies in Manila Bay. When it came time to vote, the anti-establishment mood carried the day, as Duterte won nearly 40% of the votes, a landslide in a four-candidate race.

Despite a divided electorate, most have been willing to give Duterte a chance to make good on his campaign promises. In a poll taken in July, he received a trust rating of over 80%, the highest in history.

USA TODAY

Despite profanity and controversies, Filipinos love foul-mouthed Duterte

However, Duterte’s signature accomplishment so far, his war on drugs, is ratcheting up tensions, as more than 3,500 accused pushers and users already have been killed by police and vigilantes. The new president also has repeatedly ruffled feathers on the international stage with vulgar outbursts aimed at other world leaders, including President Obama.

Rather than build bridges, Duterte and his allies in Congress, where he enjoys a super-majority, have marginalized vocal critics. Foreign investors have begun showing signs of skittishness, selling off stocks and causing the Philippine peso to slide recently to its lowest mark in seven years.

Duterte’s grip on power and popular support remain solid. But in a country with a history of volatile, personality-driven politics dating back to the Ferdinand Marcos era, whether this will be a lasting period of political peace remains to be seen.

“A country is able to move on when the winners are able to reach out to everyone, to bring everyone back together, and if those who lost concede, support the winner. Initially in the Philippines that happened.

"I think the divisions in the Philippines now are not really because of the elections. They are post-election, because the president is doing some very controversial things, very tough things, very radical things, which includes a disregard of human rights for many people. And so that's creating a divide. And it's very difficult to see how we can unify if there's a fundamental difference on views.

"So going back to the question: Can a country unify after a divisive election? The answer is actually no, if there is a real division. Because elections don't matter. The division will persist. And so the way forward is dialogue, beyond politics, beyond elections. How do we get nearer to each other? At the very least, do we understand each other’s positions? And that's not yet happening in the Philippines.

"The effective way of reconciliation after a divisive election is for the winner to deliver an effective government — delivery of services, accomplishing the promises that he or she made. We had that in Fidel V. Ramos in 1992. A very divisive election, there were even allegations of cheating, but in one year’s time he was able to unify the people around his presidency because he was able to deliver government services to the poor, to the people, and able to put up an enabling environment for business, for investments. So having done that, the bitterness in the campaign disappeared. "I think if Hillary delivers on health, especially delivers on jobs, delivers on climate change, the big things in the U. S., I think Trump will be forgotten, honestly.

"It'll be quite challenging for [Trump]. He'll have to really pivot to suddenly be a unifier-in-chief, which he doesn't pretend to be now. But for the good of the country, he might have to do it.”

13 /72 2.8 MTV President Sean Atkins to Exit Network in January

(2.13/13) A little more than a year after taking the helm at MTV , Sean Atkins is stepping down, Variety has confirmed. Atkins will remain on in a consulting capacity through January. Deadline first reported the news Monday morning.

Atkins had overseen the launches of multiple new MTV series over his one-year tenure, including “Mary + Jane” and “Loosely Exactly Nicole,” and MTV’s Snapchat Discover channel. Atkins also over saw the massive reboot of MTV News, which relaunched with a whole new digital identity earlier in 2016. “This is a brand that has always been about elevating youth voices, artists and creators, a brand that was born from music and pop culture. We want to remember that heritage and reinvigorate that creative spark around those precepts,” Atkins told Variety in February. “MTV News is the first place for this kind of refocus.”

Atkins came from Discovery, where he was general manager and executive vice president of digital media and strategy. He was chosen by Viacom Music and Entertainment Group president Doug Herzog at the end of September 2015 to ride herd on MTV, MTV2 and MTVU, replacing Stephen Friedman. Word on Atkins’ replacement should come down shortly.

The reason for the sudden departure is that of many of Atkins’ predecessors: Ratings. Despite some gains, in the nine weeks from late August through mid-October, MTV’s ratings deliveries to advertisers (C3 ratings) in the 12-34 demographic were down an average of 17% from 2015.

Here’s the e-mail Atkins sent out this morning:

I apologize for the shock to your Monday morning, but I have some news to share that will come as a surprise. I have decided to step down from my post as President of MTV. I’ll be consulting on the transition through January in an advisory role.

I will leave it to Doug to fill you in on the details, but suffice it to say this was in no way an easy decision for me. This has been an incredibly enriching and rewarding experience, and I thank every single one of you for that. I am so proud of what this team has accomplished together. We’ve filled the creative pipeline with so many new projects and producers. Amazing projects like “Sweet/Vicious,” “Stranded with a Million Bucks,” “Signed” and “Going Off” are just around the corner. We’ve moved aggressively to recapture music as our muse with projects like “Made in Compton,” “Wonderland” and “Virtually Famous” just to name a few. We’re taking the time and care to do smart thinking around the brand and vision for MTV, including bringing in new media and creative agencies to back our new brand campaign. We’ve continued to invest into our future with the successful growth of our Snapchat Discover channel, social footprint and MTV News. And we’ve continued to be an incredible social voice with our Elect This campaign and launch of our new documentary unit. This tremendous creative effort is a recipe for success and it will pay off.

I’m so deeply impressed with the team here and so grateful to have been part of it. You have unbelievable drive and dedication, unstoppable creative passion and are relentlessness in attacking challenges from every possible angle. This speaks volumes about the amazing MTV culture and your commitment to this brand.

Thank you so much, and a special word of thanks to my incredible senior team, for pushing and inspiring me every day.

You will all be in very good hands as I move on, I assure you. And I promise I will be watching and cheering as you continue to build up from the great foundation we created together.

The 34-year-old singer continued to sing and dance after her top came undone during her Piece of Me residency show at The Axis at Planet Hollywood, as seen in a fan video .

Spears was performing "I Love Rock and Roll" when a strap on her bondage-inspired bra unhooked. Backup dancers came to her aid, but she was forced to hold the top in place after it came undone a second time.

The star reemerged for "Gimme More" with a short denim vest over the bra, but the top came undone once again. A dancer gave her the shirt off his back, which she quickly buttoned up mid- song.

Spears sang and danced through a similar incident during a show in October 2015. She was performing "3" when the back of her bodysuit came completely unzipped , and had to run offstage after the song.

The "Make Me... " singer last released the album Glory in August. She opened up about her dating life on The Jonathan Ross Show in early October, saying she's perfectly happy with being single.

"A lot of men are about games," the star said. "It's just the mind game with guys -- the calling back and texting -- it's just too much, it's silly. Actually, I'm not looking for men right now. I'm really happy with myself. I'm not looking for anything. "

"I [do] like someone that's just nice overall. Just a nice guy really is groundbreaking in this world," she added.

15 /72 2.4 Dwayne Johnson sings a Lin-Manuel Miranda song in the new 'Moana' clip (2.06/13) Those of you who have wondered if the Rock can carry a tune now have your answer. Disney has released a new clip for its upcoming “Moana,” and it’s the first to feature Dwayne Johnson singing.

In the animated film Johnson voices the demigod Maui, who joins Moana on her journey to a fabled island to save her people. His confidence is displayed in full force in the clip as he sings to Moana about his various mythical accomplishments, which lead to his status as “hero of man.”

Fittingly titled “You’re Welcome,” the song is a new original tune by “Hamilton” mastermind Lin- Manuel Miranda. Among the feats by Maui humanity should be thankful for? Stealing fire for warmth, lassoing the sun to stretch out days, harnessing the breeze to fill sails and pulling up islands from the sea.

That Johnson would actually be singing in “Moana” was confirmed during the film’s San Diego Comic-Con panel in July by directors Ron Clements and John Musker. They shared that the song would be one specifically written for Johnson by Miranda.

Starring Auli’i Cravalho as the heroine, “Moana” will also feature the voices of Alan Tudyk, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Jemaine Clement and Rachel House in addition to Johnson.

“Moana” is set to hit theaters Nov. 23.

18 /72 0.6 Officials: Missing 62-year-old Raleigh man found safe :: WRAL.com (1.15/13) Posted 5:55 a.m. today Updated 39 minutes ago

Raleigh, N. C. — A Silver Alert issued Monday morning for a missing Raleigh man who may be suffering from dementia or some other cognitive impairment has been canceled. Around 8:30 a.m., officials with the Raleigh Police Department announced that Carver was found safe. Joe Lee Carver, 62, was last seen at 1308 Lane Street in Raleigh. Authorities said he was wearing a dark navy blue coat, beige pants and white shoes.

20 /72 1.6 Late singer Pete Burns said he did not want to be remembered for 'looking peculiar' years before his plastic surgery addiction (1.03/13) Later singer Pete Burns, who passed away on Tuesday from a heart attack at the age of 57, was known for his ever-changing looks, having undergone over 300 plastic surgery procedures throughout his lifetime. But in a 1987 interview with Molly Meldrum's music show Countdown, the Dead Or Alive singer insisted he didn't want to be remembered for 'looking peculiar'. 'I never wanted credit for being a wonderful person or a great human being or looking peculiar. I just wanted credit for the music,' he said at the time, years before his surgery addiction began. Scroll down for video At the time, the singer was discussing his band being the pioneers of the synthpop genre, without receiving credit from other bands like Bananarama. On Tuesday morning, the British singer-songwriter passed away due to a 'massive cardiac arrest,' his management confirmed. In a statement on Twitter, his manager said: 'It is with the greatest sadness that we have to break the tragic news that our beloved Pete Burns of (Dead Or Alive) died suddenly yesterday of a massive cardiac arrest.' The singer, from Wirral, Merseyside, founded band Dead or Alive in 1980 but went on to feature in several reality television shows in later life. His death comes just days before his band's compilation album Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI was due to be released on October 28. Earlier this year the singer admitted he has endured more 300 procedures to fix botched surgery on his face, which left him depressed and fighting for his life. The star - who likened himself to Frankenstein's monster - vowed to never stop going under the knife in the pursuit for physical perfection. He declared: 'The number of surgeries I've has is probably 300. I hope when I'm 80 and I get to heaven God doesn't recognise me.' Pete endured some difficult times in recent years, and was even declared bankrupt in 2015. He was said to have been evicted from his London flat in April 2015 over $54,000 in unpaid rent, a situation which caused his landlord 'to suffer a breakdown due to stress'. Celebrities including Boy George and 80s pop star Marilyn have also been paying tribute following news of the star's death. Boy George said: 'Tearful about the passing of @PeteBurnsICON he was one of our great true eccentrics and such a big part of my life! Wow. Hard to believe!' Marilyn said he was shocked as he saw Burns recently, writing: 'Absolute shock at the news of Pete Burns death... only just saw him ... my sincerest wishes to his family, friends, and fans.'

21 /72 1.5 Taylor Swift Instagrams throwback of 16-year-old self to mark album's 10th anniversary (1.02/13) Before the Squad, before the battle with Katy and the war with Kanye, before Hiddleswift and the list of famous ex-lovers... there was just a 16-year-old girl with a guitar. October 24th marked the ten year anniversary of Taylor Swifts debut and self-titled album, and she marked it with a throwback pic. '10 years ago today, my first album came out,' she captioned the snap of the fresh-faced teen. Wearing a pair of turn-up jeans and a Victoria's Secret Love Pink hoodie, she sits on an amp, bent over her guitar in quiet concentration, with no idea she will go on to become one of the best selling artists of all time. 'I couldn't be more grateful today, thinking back on how much fun we've had and how you've encouraged me to change and grow,' she continued in the post. 'It's been such an adventure, guys. Thank you for all of it.' Taylor Swift, which featured songs written in her freshman year of high school, went on to sell 5.5million copies, almost all of them in the US. Europe took a little longer to develop Swifties — the album's highest charted position in the UK was 81. Back then, Taylor was pure country, which sells mainly in the US; she hadn't yet drifted into the pop sound that would see her dominate the world of music. Featuring the singles Tim McGraw, Teardrops On My Guitar, Picture To Burn, Should've Said No and Our Song, it currently holds 18th place on Billboard's Greatest 200 of all time With her follow- up album - Fearless - at number four, she is the only artist with two records in the top 20. Ten years on, the Pennsylvania-born singer has sold a total more than 40 million albums and 130 million singles worldwide. Along the way she also picked up ten Grammy Awards, 23 Billboard Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, eight Academy of Country Music Awards, one Brit and one Emmy, and has appeared on Time's 100 most influential people in the world twice.

22 /72 2.3 The Piano Guys musician 'not giving up' despite authorities abandoning search for missing daughter

(1.02/13) The Piano Guys musician Jon Schmidt is holding out hope that his missing daughter is still alive despite rescue workers calling off their search.

Anna Schmidt was reported missing last week after going hiking in the Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge , where crews have been searching for the 21-year-old.

Her father, who shot to YouTube stardom with his Utah-based band doing classical covers of popular songs, appealed to his fans in the Portland area on Friday to help look for the young woman.

However, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office suspended the search on Sunday night after it and more than 100 volunteers searched more than 150 miles of trail near where her car was found last week near a trailhead.

The Portland Police Bureau said that investigators worry she may have gotten lost or injured while hiking.

"The conditions aren't average, they are extreme out here," sheriff's office Lt. Chaid Gaidos told KATU.

Despite the authorities pulling back their resources, Jon Schmidt said that he was not giving up on finding his daughter.

“Although the local authorities have suspended the official search, we are not giving up and are organizing our own efforts,” The Piano Guys posted on Monday.

23 /72 3.3 Columbia University plans to open new campus next spring (1.02/13) NEW YORK (AP) — Italian architect Renzo Piano said Monday was a perfect day to dedicate Columbia University's new science center that is part of the school's $6.3 billion West Harlem expansion. "This is exactly the day I wanted for today: sunny, breezy, fresh, crisp," he said, standing in front of the 450,000-square-foot Jerome L. Greene Science Center that replaces a defunct industrial site. "Fresh air, that's what we need," he added. The nine-floor edifice featuring exposed steel beams is part of Columbia's upcoming $6.3 billion campus that will unfold in upper Manhattan over the next decades. The former industrial area spans 17 acres. Piano, of the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, designed the master plan for the entire acreage. The science building sits between the elevated No. 1 subway train track and the Hudson River. Among other research laboratories, it will house the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute, named after the publisher. In addition, a community wellness center will link the Ivy League university with the neighborhood's health issues. Three other buildings will comprise the so-called Manhattanville Campus, named after the surrounding neighborhood. The Lenfest Center for the Arts will open next year, then the University Forum and Academic Conference Center in 2018, and finally the new home of the University's Business School in 2021. The landscaped grounds, still under construction, will be "woven into the existing street grid with no walls or gates. "

24 /72 1.1 Watch The Chainsmokers and Halsey get 'Closer' than ever in new video (1.02/13) The Chainsmokers and Halsey 's smash dance-pop duet "Closer" has been so ubiquitous these last few months -- the entirety of which they've spent on top the Billboard Hot 100 -- that you might not have realized it didn't even have a video yet. But as of today (Oct. 24), the song is lacking a visual no longer, with the collaboration's official clip finally dropping on VEVO.

The video is about what you'd expect for such an emotionally loaded pop song: a whole lot of Halsey and co-Smoker Drew Taggart singing at one another, while cutaways flash back (and possibly forward) to tell the dramatic arc of their relationship. There's a great deal of making out in various states of undress, there's a mattress with the sheet torn off the cover, and there's Halsey looking pretty in what is presumably a hotel bar. (No Blink- 182 cameo , though, sadly -- must've been busy on their own recent video shoot .)

Watch the clip here, and prepare for the reign of "Closer" to stretch well into November.

28 /72 28 /72 0.0 Lady Gaga puts on a racy display in cheeky cutoff shorts and knee-high boots in New York (0.01/13) Lady Gaga caused quite a stir when she stepped out in New York on Monday. Starting the week with a bang, the star - who is promoting her new album Joanne - wore a typically outrageous outfit as she visited Howard Stern's studio. The 30-year-old pop star also stopped by her parents' Italian restaurant during her outing where she put on a cheeky display in some ripped cutoff denim shorts. Scroll down for video Gaga teamed them with a blush pink bra and denim thigh-high boots. Topping off her look was a wide-brim pink fedora and large aviator sunglasses. During her interview with Stern, Gaga shot down rumours of a romance between her and A Star Is Born co-star Bradley Cooper. She said: 'It’s not like that. Bradley is a professional and Bradley is a household human being in every way. I can’t tell you the level of professionalism I experience with him working. 'I think more than anything that we have a very honest and authentic relationship in that we’re really friends.' When Stern brought up the possibility of love scenes and the chance it may spark something between the two actors Gaga was insistent it would never happen. 'Absolutely not' the Grammy-winner replied. 'What’s most important to me is that we tell a story that touches the hearts of the millions of people that come to see it.' Meanwhile in a video clip that emerged on Monday the Grammy-winner was seen giggling as she rearranged CDs at a Best Buy store, placing her new album in front of other artists on the store's shelves. The 30-year-old star went undercover in a black fedora and sunglasses but was unmistakable with her long platinum locks peeking out underneath. Gaga put her finger to her lips as she signaled to her camera-person to keep quiet about her covert mission. But the songstress couldn't help but giggle as she pulled out all of her albums and placed them along the top row to hide other artists. The clip was shared to Twitter on Monday morning by a Brazilian Gaga fan account. According to Billboard , Gaga is on track to get her fourth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with Joanne. Gaga worked with producer Mark Ronson on her fifth studio album which was released on Friday. She co-wrote some of the tracks with Beck, Florence Welch, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, folk-rocker Josh Tillman and country hit maker Hillary Lindsey. In an interview with Zane Lowe for Beats 1 Radio on Thursday Gaga said she doesn't like being compared with Madonna. 'Madonna and I are very different,' 'I wouldn't make that comparison at all and I don't mean to disrespect Madonna. She's a nice lady, and she's had a fantastic huge career - biggest pop star of all time. 'I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours and hours a day in the studio. I'm a producer. I'm a writer. 'What I do is different,' she added. Meanwhile the Bad Romance hitmaker appeared on SNL with Tom Hanks and Alec Baldwin over the weekend. 29 /72 0.0 Ga.'s changing demographics may be key to turning state blue this election Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of this election is that Georgia is now considered by many to be in-play.

Several recent polls have shown Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton statistically tied in a state traditionally dominated by Republicans. Why is that? Experts say it's partly because of the changing demographics of the counties immediately surrounding Atlanta.

You may have heard the expression that Georgia is a red state with Atlanta as its blue center. But as that center continues to expand, just how much it does will play a large part in whether the state itself turns blue in 2016.

After zeroing in on four counties based on their 2012 results, Henry County’s the most interesting. It went red for Mitt Romney in 2012, but trends over time show the county has tripled in size and grown far more diverse. The Republican margin of victory has shrunk in every election since 2000.

Rockdale County has a similar story. It flipped blue in 2008 for President Obama, and its voter numbers since 2000 have doubled. Hillary Clinton’s campaign is hoping for these kinds of trends around the metro.

But not every county is making such a shift. Fayette County has grown quite a bit, too, but its political complexion hasn’t changed. In 2012 it still saw 65 percent of its voters choose Romney over Obama.

Gwinnett, an increasingly diverse county, has gotten tighter and much larger, but still shows a large gap in favor of Republicans. Experts say Donald Trump needs to hold counties like these to keep Georgia red. Of course, none of these numbers consider the current candidates. Georgia wasn’t considered a swing state until this summer, when Clinton opened up a wide lead nationally. Now that she’s there again, the latest polls show the state in play, and if so, those counties around Atlanta could be prove critical.

33 /72 2.5 Small spaceships for NASA may mean big leap for humanity — RT America The small spacecraft systems can vary in size from a postage-small, (under an ounce) or up to the size of refrigerator (about 400 pounds). The Small Spacecraft Systems Virtual Institute (S3VI), which is being established at the Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, will leverage the growing small spacecraft community, according to the US space agency.

“NASA sees enormous benefits from investing in research and technology development in small spacecraft systems, such as propulsion, that will be essential in advancing the commercial space sector,” Steve Jurczyk, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) said in a statement. “Over the past several years, NASA has increased the generation of new, innovative applications of small spacecraft, with several mission directorates using small spacecraft to meet their goals.”

The research and development hub will promote innovation, identify emerging technologies and bring together industry, academia, private companies and other government agencies under NASA’s umbrella.

A study by the Rand Corporation titled ‘The Cosmos on a Shoestring’ said that small spacecraft systems offered NASA a way to maintain scientifically viable programs within tighter budgets. Small spacecraft are cheaper because of the new miniature technologies, which enables the agency to spread out mission risk. Unlike large missions, which often take a long time, with the smaller craft the agency can remains responsive to earth- and space-science communities.

“Small spacecraft fulfill important roles in earth science, astrophysics, space physics, and planetary science,” stated NASA.

The agency’s Space Technology Group began in 2011 and is currently using small spacecraft for a range of activities, such as “earth and space science measurements to help understand our environment; investigations of microgravity effects on organisms to enable the safe exploration of space; and robotic precursors to maximize the productive use of space.”

“The S3VI will provide the first one-stop shop for technical knowledge in the rapidly burgeoning small spacecraft technology fields,” said Jay Bookbinder, director of programs and projects at Ames. “This will result in more efficient development efforts, and enable smaller vendors to compete more effectively in this market.”

The institute S3VI portal will go live in early 2017 and will capture data on spacecraft activities and lessons learned, and identify collaboration opportunities and points of contacts at NASA.

37 /72 0.9 Tracey Curtis-Taylor slams claims she lied about solo expedition from South Africa to Sussex The self-proclaimed 'Bird in a Biplane' who flew from South Africa to the UK has dismissed claims that she lied about being the sole pilot on the 8,000-mile expedition. Tracey Curtis-Taylor retraced Lady Mary Heath's trailblazing 1928 journey in 2013 - flying in a classic 1940s open cockpit Boeing Stearman biplane from Cape Town to Goodwood, Sussex. It was claimed she only flew a handful of the 36 legs alone, but the 54-year-old has hit back and denied she made 'false assertions', saying she will be taking legal action. Ms Curtis-Taylor spoke out after it was revealed an award she received for her flight from South Africa has been rescinded. She said: 'I have never sought to mislead anyone about the way that my flights were undertaken. 'It is clear from what I say about the Africa flight and subsequent expeditions that they were not solo flights and that I was accompanied by a support crew.' She added: 'I began with the intention of trying to fly the Africa flight solo but a combination of elements resulted in fundamental changes being made to the nature of that expedition. 'Several people flew with me on multiple legs between Cape Town and the UK. These included sponsors, film crew and my engineer, Ewald Gritsch.' She said Mr Gritsch was not her flying instructor and did not pilot her aeroplane instead of her on any of the flights - including expeditions to Africa, Australia or the US. 'Ewald's primary role in all of these expeditions has been to provide engineering, technical and flight planning support,' Ms Curtis- Taylor said. 'He is my principal crew and the only person who is fully qualified to look after the aeroplane in what have been some very testing circumstances.' It was reported Mr Gritsch alleged he occupied the forward cockpit of the plane for most of the legs of her solo flights, saying she only flew four of them alone. But in a statement he dismissed the claims he made such allegations and said Ms Curtis-Taylor was 'the sole pilot on all her expedition flights'. 'She has more than enough flight-experience as well as piloting and navigational skills to perform all of these flights on her own,' he added. 'My role during the expedition from Cape Town to England was initially the reassembly of the airplane in Cape Town and the technical support during the expedition. 'Additionally I had to take over the flight planning across Africa at short notice, which was done together with the professional African pilots in our team and two major aviation companies.' He stressed he 'did not act as a pilot nor as a flight instructor' on the flights, and has 'never been' her flight instructor. At their annual general meeting in Northamptonshire, the Light Aircraft Association (LAA) stripped Ms Curtis-Taylor of the Bill Woodhams trophy awarded for navigation following the allegations. An overwhelming majority of 123 members voted for her to be stripped with just 65 in favour of her keeping the trophy. Ms Curtis-Taylor, 54, attended the AGM in a bid to head off the motion. An LAA spokesman said: 'We can confirm that a motion was raised by a member to rescind an award of the Bill Woodhams Trophy, made in 2014. 'We confirm that the motion was voted on at our AGM on Saturday, October 22 and was carried by a majority of voting members. 'We have no further comment to make on the award or its recipients.'

The speaker projects outwards into the environment, making it ideal for group listening. It's a compact sound system that suits outdoor use at high volumes. The $20 BP1109 is a Bluetooth speaker that aims to be ultra-portable without sacrificing style. It's built almost entirely from aluminium, creating a clean silver finish that's cool to the touch. A single Inateck logo adorns the front fascia, lending the device an attractive but unobtrusive overall appearance. The top of the device houses the plastic speaker grille. On the bottom, you'll find the basic control panel, a series of four buttons for volume, track transport, power, input mode and play and pause. A small panel on the back houses the charging port, 3.5mm input jack and a micro SD card slot. You can play music over Bluetooth, a traditional cable or directly from an SD card. To help you load the song to play, the speaker is able to talk to you to inform you of its status. Unlike the beeps and chirps of other Bluetooth accessories, the BP1109 will say "Bluetooth on" and "Waiting for Bluetooth connection" when you turn it on, making it obvious what state the device is in. Inateck says the aluminium uni-body design enables the 3.2W speaker to project music "loud and clear" and eliminate excessive sound resonance. In practice, I found this claim to be dubious. While the BP1109 is capable of delivering ample volume, it falls short in overall sound quality. There's only limited bass that quickly falls away as the volume is increased. Similarly, the mids and highs start out respectable but merge together in complex or loud sections, creating a shrill cacophony. The speaker's output is tolerable but it's not something you'd want to listen to alone for hours on end. While the circular design is stylish, I feel it hinders the speaker's audio performance. Because the sound is fired upwards, there's no real sense of direction or immersion. This could have its benefits in some scenarios though. It's easy to see the BP1109 being used as the centre of a party or outdoor event, blasting sound outwards in all directions when quality isn't a major concern. The speaker's also got some notable other strengths. At just 78x34mm, it really is compact enough to take with you wherever you go. The circular design makes it easy to slip into a bag, although the 260g weight is conspicuous for a device of these dimensions. The majority of the weight comes from the reasonably-sized battery. It offers 6 hours of playback from 1-2 hours of charging. With a retail price of $19.99, the If you're looking for higher-quality audio for personal listening, the BP1109 probably isn't for you. If you're most interested in a minimalist and robust budget speaker for group listening, the BP1109 should be on your list though. Verdict The Pros - Achieves respectably high volumes - Stylish design looks good without being obtrusive - Can play music directly from a micro SD card Cons - Sound quality degrades at higher volumes - Lacking in bass output - Comparatively high weight Over the past year, I've had the chance to review several of Inateck's audio products, including a couple of the company's previous speakers. The BP1109 is a new offering with a lower price tag than its siblings. It doesn't suffer in the design department though, featuring a minimalist aesthetic created by its circular chassis. The speaker is one of three Inateck products I have on review at the moment. The other two will be published in separate articles over the next week. 39 /72 3.1 Lily Collins reveals she's penning memoirs just as dad Phil releases his autobiography She's only 27 but Phil Collins' daughter Lily is already writing her memoirs. The model and actress is writing personal essays about being the daughter of a famous musician, dating and body image and will publish them in a revealing book entitled Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me. Speaking to People magazine, she said: 'It's definitely like having my diary published.' Scroll down for video The Mirror Mirror actress was inspired to write the tome by director Warren Beatty and her role in Rules Don't Apply as devout baptist Marla Mabrey, which sees her character overcome 'intense' situations. She explained: 'I was put into many situations throughout the years in acting, in Warren's film especially, where you're in an intense situation and you have to fight your way through it, go through the emotions, and live and breath those scenes.' Lily was previously romantically linked to her co-stars in both The Mortal Instruments and Abduction, Jamie Campbell Bower and Taylor Lautner, and while she won't be name-dropping any ex- boyfriends, she will open up about what she has learnt from past relationships. She told the magazine: 'It was not about attacking, it was about showing how you can be given situations in life and turn them into lessons. It takes knowing what you don't want in order to know what you do want.' Lily is also writing the book in the hope of inspiring other young women who share their lives on social media. The announcement comes after Phil, 65, launched his own autobiography, Not Dead Yet. Phil was looking sprightly today when he left the CBS studios after discussing his book on television. The drummer, walking with a cane, donned a navy polo and with a blue bomber jacket for the outing. He waved to his fans outside the studios as he made his way sporting a baseball cap and glasses. In his book, Phil candidly talks about his battle with alcohol addiction and the ups and downs of his career.

40 /72 40 /72 1.2 Mystery as Nasa images show area has changed from blue to gold in just four years It has long baffled astronomers, and now the strange hexagon at Saturn's north pole has a new mystery. These two natural colour images from NASA's Cassini spacecraft show the changing appearance of Saturn's north polar region between 2012 and 2016. It shows a clear change from blue to gold - and nobody knows why. Scroll down for video Scientists are investigating potential causes for the change in color of the region inside the north-polar hexagon on Saturn. The colour change is thought to be an effect of Saturn's seasons. 'In particular, the change from a bluish color to a more golden hue may be due to the increased production of photochemical hazes in the atmosphere as the north pole approaches summer solstice in May 2017,' Nasa said. Researchers think the hexagon, which is a six-sided jetstream, might act as a barrier that prevents haze particles produced outside it from entering. During the seven-year-long Saturnian winter, the polar atmosphere became clear of aerosols produced by photochemical reactions - reactions involving sunlight and the atmosphere. Since the planet experienced equinox in August 2009, the polar atmosphere has been basking in continuous sunshine, and aerosols are being produced inside of the hexagon, around the north pole, making the polar atmosphere appear hazy today. Other effects, including changes in atmospheric circulation, could also be playing a role. Scientists think seasonally shifting patterns of solar heating probably influence the winds in the polar regions. Both images were taken by the Cassini wide-angle camera. The unusual geometric structure, which is around 20,000 miles (32,187 km) wide, rotates at almost exactly the same rate as Saturn spins on its axis. Scientists now believe it is formed by winds, similar to our own arctic jet stream, racing eastwards around the pole at cloud level and being jostled into shape by other winds below it. The findings provide a 'simple' solution to the properties of the strangely shaped vortex, according to astronomers. Writing in journal Astrophysical Journal Letters , Professor Raúl Morales-Juberías, a planetary scientist at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, and his colleagues said the key to the shape appeared to be the height of the jet stream. They constructed computer models of Saturn's dense atmosphere in the northern hemisphere to see how winds at different levels may behave. They said: 'Past numerical and laboratory modelling efforts have succeeded in reproducing some, but not all, of the hexagon's characteristics. 'We present numerical simulations showing that instabilities in shallow jets can equilibrate as meanders closely resembling the observed morphology and phase speed of Saturn's northern hexagon. 'We also find that the winds at the bottom of the model are as important as the winds at the cloud level in matching the observed Hexagon's characteristics, in particular its drift rate and its shape sharpness.' The hexagon on Saturn was first discovered in 1988 in images taken by Nasa's Voyager spacecraft as they flew past the planet in the early 1980s. Nasa's Cassini Spacecraft has since provided close-up colour images of the bizarre churning mass, which is twice the diameter of the Earth. Thermal images revealed that it reached up to 60 miles (97 km) down into Saturn's atmosphere. The strange hexagonal structure, seen in the animation above from directly over Saturn's north pole, rotates at the same speed as the planet itself spins on its axis. It is more than 20,000 miles (32,190km) in diameter Other images revealed the points of the hexagon rotate at the same speed as Saturn's own rotation while a jet stream was found to follow its path eastwards at speeds of around 220mph (354 km/h). However, scientists were baffled about why the shaped formed because it did not appear to be influenced by seasons, and there were many explanations put forward. For instance water swirling on Earth can sometimes generate vortexes that have geometric shapes. Others have suggested they are manifestations of a 'Rossby Wave' rooted deep in the planet's atmosphere that propagates vertically as the jet stream makes its way around the pole. However, the new findings have suggested the winds beneath the jet stream are responsible for jostling this air current into its geometric shape. This helps to explain why the hexagon is not influenced by seasonal changes, said the researchers. It is hoped that by studying the movement of the hexagon it may be possible to understand more about the winds that are hidden beneath the stormy clouds in the gas giant's upper atmosphere. Speaking to Space.com , Professor Morales-Juberías said: 'With a very simple model, we have been able to match many of the observed properties of the hexagon.'

41 /72 1.6 PIERS MORGAN: Hey Justin, if you want to prove how grown you are now, stop acting like a spoilt little kid, sing more and preach less I like Justin Bieber. He’s a talented, resilient young man who’s reinvented himself incredibly successfully in the shallow world of pop music that usually swallows up and destroys most of its teen idols. We’ve met once, at the Vanity Fair post-Oscars party in 2011. When I was introduced to him, he promptly stood up, shook my hand and said: ‘Nice to meet you, Sir.’ He then introduced me to Selena Gomez, his girlfriend at the time, and the three of us chatted for a few minutes. Two things struck me about that brief encounter. One, Master Bieber is tiny. Two, he was incredibly polite and respectful. I thought of this when I watched footage of him stomping off stage at the Manchester Arena in England last night. He was angry because some of his fans started booing when he kept stopping his show to talk to them about why his tour was called Purpose. Yes, a 22-year-old pop star wanted to discuss the purpose of life…. There was just one problem: the fans wanted to hear him sing, not preach to them. Not, you might think, an unreasonable sentiment given they had forked out $60-$85 for basic tickets, with VIP packages going for $160. Oh, and then there was the merchandise on sale at the Arena: $60 for cotton shirts, $130 for hoodies, $300 for a tour jacket and $1300 for a leather Bieber biker jacket. All this plus the travel costs of getting there from all parts of Britain, and of course, food, drink and perhaps hotel accommodation. So, some of those fans will have spent thousands of dollars to watch their hero perform for two hours. And if they wanted to hear him sing, not deliver homilies on the purpose of life, they have more than earned that right. So how did Justin repay them? He threw a little tantrum, that’s how. Actually he threw a gigantic, ego-fuelled, cocky, diva tantrum of epic proportions. He dropped his mic, stopped the concert, and flounced off stage. Minutes later, he returned and sneered: ‘Manc can’t handle the talking so I won’t talk.’ Well no Justin mate, it’s more that ‘Manc’ prefers to hear you singing. If ‘Manc’ wanted deep, meaningful conversation about the purpose of life, they’d go see the Dalai Lama. At the end of the show, Bieber explained his distress: ‘The reason I was getting upset earlier was because I travelled across the whole world to come here and I dedicate my life to performing and bring smiles to people’s faces. I feel that people were just not giving me the respect back and it hurts a little bit, so that’s why. I thought I could have a moment to say something, but if you guys want, I can cut the bulls**t! ‘I’m trying to engage but if you guys don’t want to, I’ll play the music.’ You said it yourself, Justin, the purpose of life stuff is ‘bulls**t’. No 22-year-old can have any real comprehension what the purpose of life is, so why bother trying to pretend you do? This wasn’t his first hissy-fit on the UK leg of his tour. Last Thursday, in Birmingham, Bieber erupted when fans screamed as he delivered his purpose of life speech. ‘If, when I’m speaking’ he snapped, ‘you guys could not scream at the top of your lungs, is that cool with you guys? The screaming is just so obnoxious.’ Wow. Really, Justin? You think your fans are ‘obnoxious’ because they have the temerity to scream in adulation at you? How about taking a long, hard look at yourself in the mirror young man to see who’s being truly obnoxious around here? Bieber’s not had an easy life. His parents split up when he was a toddler and the angst that caused weighed heavily on him. Becoming a teen superstar, with all the weird myriad pressures it brings, poured fuel onto the fire of that angst. In 2014, he went bonkers, charging around drunk-driving, taking drugs, crashing cars, chucking eggs at his neighbours, fighting and having frequent run-ins with the cops. A damaging tape emerged from when he was 15 of him using the N-word. It’s fair to say Bieber didn’t just go off the rails, he smashed through the safety barriers and was careering into professional and personal oblivion. I had an interesting email exchange at the time with his dad Jeremy. ‘Justin is 19,’ Jeremy told me, ‘He is simply finding himself in this world of illusions. He is experimenting and exploring the only way he can which is far milder than average. I would be worried if he wasn’t. I suppose it’s human nature to try and break people down, but that’s not going to happen with my family. This will make us stronger. It’s easy to judge someone you don’t know. I no longer need to physically hold Justin’s hand through life. I expose him to family values and give him advice from the lessons I learned. I tell him I love him every day. He is an incredible young man, and anyone who actually took a minute to talk to him would see this magnificent person is not just OK, he is fantastic. I just wanted to give you some insight from a father to a father.’ I was impressed by his candour and, as the father of three young men myself (now 23, 19 and 15) I understood the importance of letting your lads come of age in their own way. Following his train-wreck year, Justin pulled himself together, got back to work, produced some great new music and turned himself from a global laughing stock into a credible superstar again. That is all greatly to his credit. What’s disappointing about his behaviour this past week is that he’s not a teenage kid any more. He’s now a grown man who’s been given a rare second chance to enjoy the highly lucrative hanging fruits of superstardom and he should be more appreciative of that fact than he appears to be. The fans screaming at him or begging him to sing not prattle on about the purpose of life are the ones who stood by him in his time of need. He owes them the very respect he is indignantly, selfishly demanding for himself. My advice to Justin Bieber is simple, and it’s the same advice I would give my own sons: be the guy your dad believes you to be.

43 /72 1.6 Space station gets first delivery from Virginia after a two-year hiatus A capsule carrying 5,300 pounds of food, clothing, spare parts, lab equipment, and science experiments arrived at the International Space Station Sunday morning.

Astronauts grabbed the vehicle, called Cygnus, with a robotic arm and pulled it to the station for docking. Over the next month the crew will unload its contents while Cygnus remains tethered to the station. Ultimately, the space station crew will reload the empty vessel with about 4,000 pounds of trash and release it to burn up in the atmosphere in mid-November.

But before the vehicle destroys itself, an onboard experiment called Spacecraft Fire Experiment- II, or Saffire-II, will intentionally start a small fire to test how zero gravity and limited oxygen affect flame size and the spread of fire. Data from Saffire-II will be downloaded remotely , according to an Orbital ATK announcement. Before it disintegrates, Cygnus also will release several cubesats, or mini satellites, to be used for weather forecasting.

Though it took the capsule only a week to reach the science lab, orbiting 220 miles above the Earth at an average speed of 17,227 miles per hour , the trip was years in the making. It marks the first time in two years that a rocket lifted off from Virginia’s Wallops Island. The rocket, called Antares, flew again for the first time since a 2014 launch explosion grounded the vehicle and closed down the launchpad. While the maker of the Antares rocket, Sterling, Va.- based Orbital ATK, redesigned it and rebuilt the pad, the NASA contractor kept space station deliveries going by using another company’s rocket, which launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The Antares rocket's highly anticipated launch was set for Sunday, Oct. 16, but was canceled at the last minute by a faulty cable. It finally blasted off the following day but had to orbit for more time than the usual couple of days to clear the way for three astronauts who arrived on Friday aboard a Russian Soyuz capsule. Their arrival doubled the size of the crew, which now includes a Japanese astronaut, two Americans, and three Russians.

Orbital is one of two private companies hired by NASA to deliver cargo to the space station. The other is SpaceX, which also has faced major technical setbacks. Just last month, a test of its Falcon 9 rocket at Cape Canaveral ended in an explosion on the launch pad. SpaceX's explosion is not expected to cause major cargo-delivery delays, according to the company, which says it could resume delivery in November.

SpaceX and Boeing are expected to start ferrying astronauts to the space station in the next couple of years. Today only Russia can launch humans to space aboard its Soyuz rocket. As USA Today reported in 2015, it costs US taxpayers about $75 million for every ride to the space station, a sum that could rise to $82 million in 2018.

45 /72 3.9 ‘Shameless’: Emmy Rossum on Directing, Fiona’s Future, Season 8 I guess were forgetting s4- s5 Mickey x Ian with that war and sex comment. Also what sex, we hardly saw Ian x Mickey have sex.

I’m happy for Emmy, and what issues they are tyring to portray but I’m gonna bow out, if they continue to trash the wonderful character development that Mickey Milkovich had.

“He’s a really important character, in terms of real contrast of Ian’s relationship with Mickey Milkovich. This is all love and that was war and sex.” I’m frozen in horror at this comment/remark/attitude/belief. If this is truly what the show runners believe, please just give up now and cancel the show. Apparently what the show will never realize is Ian and Mickey had true love against all odds and we cheered and cherished it and then the writers went in and ruined it and threw it all away and now when we see Ian with any other character we don’t trust it and we will never be sucked in again.

The ratings are still really strong, #1 or #2 ratings wise on Showtime, hope it goes at least ten years. Rossum did a wonderful job directing this episode, hope she continues to direct.

46 /72 0.0 Chrissy Teigen flashes her cleavage in a plunging gold suit on London date night with John Legend... as she lashes out at 'mummy shamers' in furious rant She's the proud mother of adorable six-month-old daughter Luna. And Chrissy Teigen looked every inch the yummy mummy as she headed for dinner in London with her husband John Legend on Thursday just hours after she came under fire from 'mummy shamers' who accused her of holding her baby 'like a handbag'. The Sports Illustrated model, 30, took to Twitter in the early hours of the morning to lash out at the critics, as she told them to 'shut up' after they suggested she was holding Luna incorrectly. Scroll down for video The drama unfolded after one fan shared a snap of Chrissy with her daughter, writing: 'this is not how a baby is held!!!!' But in Chrissy's typical sassy style, she responded: 'really because that's how I'm f***ing holding her.' Continuing the argument, the fan posted: 'I dont give a c**p where that baby popped out from! Do not hold a baby like a handbag!' to which she swiftly replied: 'well you hold your handbag like a f***ing idiot then.' Addressing her 2.86 million Twitter followers, the model - who recently made her account private after receiving online abuse - wrote: 'Photos are literally split-second moments in time that evolve. I despise mommy shamers. I am a proud shamer of mommy shamers.' The angry fan continued, however, tweeting: 'there are incorrect ways to hold infants whether you're shielding her from a fire or pap!' to which Chrissy bluntly responded: 'please, do shut up.' The argument came to a head, when the fan wrote: 'LOOK UP Hip Dysplasia, Plagiocephaly and Spondylolysis!!!' Referring to the fan's earlier admission that they suffered injuries from being held incorrectly as an infant, Chrissy coolly ended the argument reasoning: 'maybe your mom should have looked it up. We are all good over here. One of the only ways she won't wiggle or cry.' Despite the heated online exchange, Chrissy seemed in good spirits as she joined John for dinner in Mayfair later that evening. The married couple matched each other in their black and gold ensembles as they held hands with one another. Chrissy wore a very loud plunging printed jumpsuit. Her chocolate, caramel locks were styled in loose waves as they cascaded down her shoulders. She added a pair of chic heels to complete her look, along with a black handbag. John looked dapper in a military style jacket, which was adorned with gold buttons. The pair looked happy as they strode along hand in hand. Clearly the Sports Illustrated model is enjoying her stay in the United Kingdom. She posted a photo of her and her husband arm in arm on Wednesday. Chrissy captioned the photo: 'London! Had a delicious meal at Sexy Fish. So my week has consisted of a place called Fish Cheeks and a place called Sexy Fish. If anyone knows of another oddly named Fish place, let me know!' The Spike co-host wore a long burgundy dress. Her husband wore a pair of black trousers, which he teamed with a chic camel coat.

47 /72 4.0 Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon celebrate early Halloween with kids LOS ANGELES, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Friendly exes Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon celebrated an early Halloween with their kids over the weekend.

The 46-year-old singer and 36-year- old actor brought their 5-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan, to Carey's annual Halloween party Saturday.

Carey masqueraded as a devil in a skintight red costume, while Cannon and Moroccan dressed as the Super Mario Bros. characters Luigi and Mario. Monroe went as Rapunzel from the Disney movie Tangled.

"Early Halloween Family Flow! #Ncredible," Cannon captioned a photo of himself with Carey and their kids on Instagram.

Retired boxer Floyd Mayweather and singers Tamar Braxton and Tameka "Tiny" Cottle were among the other celebrities in attendance. Sources told TMZ that Carey's fiancé, James Packer, wasn't present because he isn't a big fan of Halloween parties.

Carey and Cannon split in 2014 after six years of marriage and finalized their divorce in April 2015. The actor told Karen Civil in June that he and Carey remain on good terms.

"My ex and I are in a great place and are diligently moving things along so we both can continue to be happy," he said at the time. "I am happy for her and all her new endeavors, both personal ones and professional ones. "

Carey last released the album Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse in 2014, and will star on the new E! series Mariah's World. Cannon will also appear on the show, which is slated to premiere Dec. 4.

48 /72 0.3 Mystery of begonia's bizarre BLUE leaves solved: Strange colour allows the plant to harvest more light Begonias with striking blue leaves may represent a next step in plant evolution that puts them ahead of their ordinary green neighbours, research suggests. The blue colour results from a super-efficient form of photosynthesis that allows them to use light other plants reject. These findings could help scientists develop light-harvesting devices to make better electronics. There are over 1,500 species of begonia, but the biological function of the bright blue sheen has mystified scientists for decades. Now it has been found the leaves only develop this sheen when put in almost dark conditions - and in bright light the sheen slowly disappears. The flowers use their unusual leaves to harness what little light there is. The study, published in Nature Plants, rules out a previous popular hypothesis that it was to to deter predators. 'The real novelty of what the begonia is doing is combining the light harvesting mechanism with the photonic structure - light is being both structurally manipulated and harvested with high levels of quantum efficiency within the same material,' Dr Heather Whitney, from Bristol University, said. 'I am not a physicist - we started this work on the biology side - but my photonics collaborators tell me this is highly novel and may throw up some very interesting possibilities if we can replicate this.' The plants - including species commonly grown as houseplants or in gardens - have long been using a special form of nanotechnology called photonics to create structures in their leaves to help them harvest light. 'We discovered under the microscope, individual chloroplasts in these leaves reflected blue light brightly, almost like a mirror,' said Matt Jacobs, a PhD student at Bristol University. 'Looking in more detail by using a technique known as electron microscopy, we found a striking difference between the 'blue' chloroplasts found in the begonias, also known as "iridoplasts" due to their brilliant blue iridescent colouration, and those found in other plants. 'The inner structure had arranged itself into extremely uniform layers just a few 100 nanometres in thickness - or a 1,000th the width of human hair.' Chloroplasts harvest sunlight and convert it into chemical energy for the plant, with light initially absorbed by membranes, called thylakoids, that assemble into large, variably-sized stacks. One reason for the flowers' popularity is their ability to survive indoors without direct sunlight. This is because many begonias grow beneath tropical forests, where the light reaching the ground may be a tiny fraction of that at the top of the tree canopy. Plants here need to scavenge every bit of light they can in order to survive. The researchers looked at Begonia pavonina - found under the thick canopies of tropical forests in Malaysia. It has iridescent blue leaves due to unusual chloroplasts, known as iridoplasts, in its surface layers. These contain regularly spaced stacks of three to four thylakoids that resemble a photonic crystal and strongly reflect wavelengths of light between 430 and 560 nanometres - accounting for the leaves' blue iridescence. They look very similar to the artificial structures commonly used to make miniature lasers that control the flow of light. In the Malaysian forests, the small amount of light that reaches the plant's leaves is mainly at the green-red end of the spectrum. The iridoplasts concentrate these specific wavelengths onto the plant's photosynthetic apparatus - increasing the efficiency of its photosynthesis by five to ten per cent. The researchers say the plant's unique design - perfected by evolution - could be used in other plants to improve crop yields or in artificial devices to make better electronics. Further research needs to be carried out but the begonia holds more secrets than the average household plant, they said.

49 /72 1.4 He got dementia, but said he still could work. Then his university fired him If you're a boss and an employee tells you they have dementia or Alzheimer's disease, will you let them keep their current job?

That question — and an employer answering "no" to it — are at the center of a new lawsuit against a Connecticut university.

Gary Reho says he was fired from his job as an athletic center director in violation of federal disability rights law after he told the school he had been diagnosed with the onset of dementia.

Reho's federal suit against Sacred Heart University is one of the few such known cases in the United States.

But more like it could be coming soon against companies and other employers as the population ages, people work longer and some of them are diagnosed with degenerative neurological conditions related to aging.

"I wouldn't call it a common claim, but I do think it is becoming more common," said David Fram, director of ADA and equal employment opportunity services at the National Employment Law Institute. "I think we will see more of these mental health cases coming up in these workplaces. "

Fram was aware of just one other similar Americans with Disabilities Act lawsuit to Reho's, involving the chief psychologist of an Illinois hospital who was fired after he was diagnosed with a deterioration of his short-term memory that allegedly made him unfit for duty.

Fram said that unlike physical disabilities, where a person's difficulty in doing a certain job may be visually obvious, mental health cases like Reho's can be trickier for employers to deal with — and to make the right decision to avoid being sued for violating the ADA. The act provides rights and protections to people with both physical and mental disabilities.

"It gets hard when it's a hidden condition, when you can't really tell easily whether the person has the ability to do the job or not," Fram said.

He also said, "I do think there's going to be a learning curve for employers. Employers haven't had to deal with these issues in the past. "

Reho's case, like other ADA claims, hinges on two questions: whether his mental condition makes him disabled, and then whether he is qualified to still do the job given the limitations from the disability, Fram said.

Reho's lawyer, Michael Satti, told CNBC that his client "absolutely" could do his job today. "This guy is as fit as a fiddle," Satti said. "He's not walking around drooling. "

But months after Reho told Sacred Heart about his dementia diagnosis, "he was offered the option of applying for either short-term disability, or no longer having his position," Satti said.

Reho's reaction, Satti said, was "'I'm not going to do it.'" He then was fired.

"I think as long as they're able to do the job, they should be able to work," Satti said of Reho and other people with mental disabilities. The suit that he filed for Reho accuses the university of failing "to make reasonable accommodation" for him and his job responsibilities in accordance with the ADA.

Sacred Heart, in a statement emailed to CNBC, said, "We are confident that when the facts come out during the discovery process that Mr. Reho's claims will be deemed unfounded. Because of the ongoing litigation, we cannot provide any additional information at this time. "

Reho later became director of Sacred Heart's Pitt Health and Recreation Center, where he served from 1997 through 2015, and was most recently earning about $90,000 annually.

According to his federal suit, Reho "never" received either verbal or written warnings, disciplinary actions or reprimands during his quarter-century of employment at Sacred Heart.

The suit says that he underwent a neurological consult examination in December 2014, after having several cataract surgeries. The exam ended with Reho being diagnosed with an impression of "posterior cortical atrophy type of Major Neurocognitive Disorder. "

"In other words, onset of Dementia," the suit said.

But Reho's neuropsychologist, Dr. Christine McCarthy, wrote after the exam: "Mr. Reho's cognitive functioning and emotional well-being will be improved by returning to work," the suit noted.

Reho told his superiors at Sacred Heart about the diagnosis, with McCarthy's report, in January 2015, "which included Dr. McCarthy's recommended accommodation and modifications to the Plaintiff's job duties," according to the lawsuit.

The suit goes on to note that over the next several months there was a series of communications between Sacred Heart's human resources department and Reho's doctors, which included the question of whether Reho could perform "the essential functions" of his job based on how the university described that position.

Those communications include a June 2015 letter from McCarthy to the head of the university's HR department. In that letter, the doctor takes issue with the university claiming that she had previously said that she believed Reho "could not perform the essential functions of his job" and that "the best course of action was to move Mr. Reho to short-term disability at the present time. " McCarthy said that the university's characterization of her opinion is "an entirely incorrect and inaccurate account of the overall gist of the professional opinions that I related. " The doctor also said that the university's proposal to move Reho to short-term disability could well deprive him of his rights and protections under the ADA.

Also, removing Reho from his job would deprive him "of the cognitive stimulation and the social engagement that are among the practices that have proven efficacy in slowing the progression of neurodegenerative disease processes," she said.

Dr. Philip Barasch, who was retained to conduct an independent medical examination of Reho during this time, wrote that Reho "has a dementing illness, which has resulted in significant cognitive impairments. "

Barasch wrote that given those impairments, and after a basic neurological examination he gave Reho, he thought it was "unlikely" Reho would be able to adequately perform tasks outlined in his job description. But he noted "this is somewhat dependent on what assistance and accommodations the university is willing to offer. "

After Reho rejected Sacred Heart's suggestion that he go on short-term disability, he was fired on Aug. 27, 2015, in a letter from human resources that said his job as director of the recreation center "is no longer a viable position. "

Despite that dismissal, Reho was hired this past summer to provide martial arts instruction to a two-month-long program for children conducted at Sacred Heart University, according to his lawyer Satti. But, at some point, Sacred Heart stopped paying Reho for that work — shorting him about 20 percent or so of what he was owed, Satti said.

Sacred Heart did not comment on that claim.

Fram, of the National Employment Law Institute, said the ADA "doesn't list conditions" including dementia and Alzheimer's explicitly as covered conditions. But he added that both of them could fall under the ADA's standard of a disability being "a physical or mental impairment that significantly limits life's activities. "

"The harder question for that person: Is he qualified for the particular job, given the disability, or given the dementia," Fram said.

He said the court that hears Reho's suit will have to consider "the really critical question... of what, really, are the essential functions of the job," to determine whether Reho could perform them, despite his condition.

"If it's an essential function, and he can't do them, then he's not qualified," Fram said.

50 /72 2.4 Viacom Wants to Weave Live-Streaming Fans Into TV Programs Viewers used to chant “I want my MTV!” In 2017, they may just be able to help create their MTV.

The network’s owner, Viacom , is set early next year to test an experiment that would allow live- streams from viewers to be incorporated into a program on the air. Imagine watching people dance – almost live – to a popular video running on air. A new program using the technology is expected to debut on MTV Music in Australia, and executives at the entertainment conglomerate believe programmers from across the company would be eager to make use of it.

“Australia is moving so quickly to get this on the air, and we hope to do the same in the U. S. and other territories very quickly,” said Susan Claxton , a co-head of Viacom Labs , an internal unit that examines viewer behavior and works to devise programming formats that accommodate them. “Multiple” networks owned by Viacom are looking at ways to use the idea, she said. “If the ‘Selfie Generation’ and our fans want to share, we are looking at a lot of ways to connect them to and engage them with our content.”

If the technique sounds familiar, well, it’s tempting to pronounce it the modern-age equivalent of using technology to let viewers post opinions about music videos, a technique that was part of MTV’s once-popular music program “TRL.” In this case, says Claxton, the technology has the potential to take things even further. “It kind of democratizes reality TV, she said. “Anyone who is on the platform can participate and co-create with us.” In an experiment this summer, fans were able to raise their hands in virtual fashion by using a mobile device that supports live-streaming and a designated hashtag. Producers could then queue up feeds and select different streams in real-time from a control room.

The early effort suggests producers of old-school TV are looking to incorporate the new-school version. The advent of technologies including Periscope, Meerkat and Facebook Live has several media outlets wondering not only how to broadcast their content using these new technologies, but how to turn the live, streaming video into programming that can bring in an audience of scale that would be worth the time of major advertisers. Al Roker, the host on NBC’s “Today,” has through his production company, Roker Labs, begun experimenting with cooking shows and other formats tailored to live streaming. The New York Times and other outlets have begun testing ways of using Facebook Live to offer authoritative news accounts from editorial personnel.

Viacom has also dabbled in these new areas, said Claxton. The Comedy Central program “@midnight” recently broadcast an episode via Periscope. “It’s a totally new way of storytelling, and new way for us to connect with our fans,” she said.

The company is prepared in case some of those fans try to use the new medium in ways that a traditional broadcaster may not be able to stomach, said Claxton. Producers are able to use a delay or to place the live-streamers in a queue of sorts where they can be monitored, in case they get an idea to test the boundaries of profanity or nudity. “You can build in any sort of delay you want. If it’s our standards and practices to have a ten-second delay, you can absolutely dub that in,” she said. “We are curating this ourselves, and if we see someone doing something egregious, we would not put them on the air.”

Viacom Labs has put an intense focus on the technology in recent moths, said Claxton. In Amsterdam, an MTV network had devised something called “MTV Bump,” a technology that allowed fans to use social media to “trick out” an MTV logo, which could then be sent in and used on air in a video interstitial. Executives found the Amsterdam team had been working with a German company that had technology allowing one to transform a computer into an ersatz “production truck,” said Claxton. If fans made use of a particular hashtag, TV producers could line up their feeds almost as if each one was on a different camera, then load the feeds into an on-air production.

Producers at Australia’s MTV Music volunteered to run a test in the form of a midnight video show. Producers in the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States could take live-stream feeds from around the world and incorporate them into the show, which generated more viewership than had been the norm for the time slot, executives said, without disclosing figures.

More such stuff may be on the way, depending on how viewers embrace the concepts. “ The Viacom Labs team will continue to push the limits of possibility around live streaming and more, across all our brands, where hundreds of fans-first innovations are already underway,” said Ross Martin, executive vice president of marketing strategy and engagement. “Tapping advanced TV and live storytelling to propel fan engagement will make a huge impact across our portfolio.”

52 /72 1.0 Vulgar word in song about Zuma returns to sting eTV The offensive word was “blurted out” by comedian Tats Nkonzo‚ while singing a satirical song about President Jacob Zuma‚ in a pre-recorded episode of The Big Debate screened at 10am on Sunday‚ July 31.

Itumeleng Montsho complained about “this foul vulgarity” to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA)‚ saying it was broadcast while children were watching.

“The programme was flighted on a Sunday with children and the mayor of Johannesburg in the audience amongst other political dignitaries‚” said Montsho.

“The comedian used the (Zulu) word while singing a satirical song about the president.”

eTV argued‚ in its defence‚ that although the word referred to genetalia it was “clearly said ‘tongue in cheek’ in the course of a comedic routine”‚ and had been used fleetingly in the context of political satire about Nkandla.

“The joke was accompanied by laughs from the audience clearly indicating that it was just a joke and not to be taken seriously.”

The episode had an age restriction and was rated PG13VL.

Montsho‚ however‚ disagreed and said: “This is unacceptable‚” and asked if English words with similar meanings - giving two examples - “were used in a comedic routine‚ would this be acceptable at that time of day? I interpreted the audiences response as shock‚ you can clearly see that Mayor Parks Tau is taken aback.”

The BCCSA evaluated both arguments and pointed out that broadcasters were not permitted to air material that is “harmful or disturbing to children at times when a large number of children is likely to be part of the audience”. And eTV had conceded that it was initially not aware that the comedian had uttered the word.

“It was not disputed that the word is grossly offensive and cannot have any other meaning than that of referring to female genitalia in a vulgar and offensive manner‚” said the ruling by the BCCSA.

Cougar punter Jonny Linehan took to Twitter to compare a night on the skating rink to the disastrous fake punt.

Utes move up in ESPN power rankings After a big weekend on the offensive side of the ball the Utah Utes from No. 16 to No. 15 in the ESPN college football power rankings .

Talking about the win over UCLA, they wrote, "Running back Joe Williams rushed for four touchdowns and 332 yards against UCLA, breaking Utah's single-game rushing record. Williams is one of just six running backs in the past 10 seasons to rush for at least 325 yards and four touchdowns. Next weekend he'll face one of the toughest front sevens in the Pac-12: Washington's. "

Utah Jazz receive high praise

Sports Illustrated had plenty of good things to say about the Utah jazz as part of its NBA preview. Writes Jeremy Woo of the No. 8 ranking for the Jazz in the preseason power rankings, " ' Sleeper' is a familiar and easily applicable sports trope. Oftentimes, we all have the same sleeper, which renders that sleeper no longer a sleeper. That’s where we’re at with the 2016-17 Utah Jazz, who have parlayed good health, young talent and savvy veteran pickups into a glittery outlook and potential to be pleasantly fun. "

After talking about the number of minutes the new additions for the Jazz have logged in the NBA, Rohan Nadkarni writes, "The new vets will provide a boost to the Jazz’s callow—though enviably talented—young core of Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors, Rudy Gobert and Dante Exum. Hill gives them stability at point guard, allowing the 21-year-old Exum, who missed last season with a torn left ACL, to ease back into the rotation. A capable shooter with a long wingspan, Hill can be a role player on offense while seamlessly integrating himself into a swarming defense. "

Nadkarni continues, "Johnson and Diaw give Utah flexibility in the frontcourt—not to mention loads of playoff experience. (The team has not been to the postseason since 2012.) Johnson can shoot from the outside and carry the offense for brief stretches. The crafty Diaw will help to match up with small-ball lineups on nights when Gobert is ineffective. "

54 /72 0.9 Vinyl record store opens on downtown block undergoing resurgence MUSKEGON, MI – The renaissance of downtown Muskegon's Third Street corridor is well underway with the addition of a vinyl record store. Third Coast Vinyl opened on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 1115 Third St. The store stocks new and used records and other music-related items.

"Contrary to what a lot of people might think, they do make new records," said Paul Pretzer, owner of Third Coast Vinyl.

Record sales have been on the rise since about 2008, and reached a 28- year high in 2015 when revenues hit $416 million, according a Fortune Magazine article .

Pretzer chose the Third Street location because he sees potential in the neighborhood.

"I wanted to be part of something that I thought was growing," he said.

As a young adult, Pretzer frequented the Ice Pick, a punk rock club on Third Street in the 1980s. That location will soon to be home to Hamburger Mikey, a takeout burger joint.

Former Ice Pick punk club getting new life as Hamburger Mikey restaurant

"I've seen the changes over the years, and wanted to be part of that," Pretzer said. "I wanted to be part of the solution in renovating the neighborhood. I like that we're still part of the downtown, but this end has a neighborhood feel. "

As for Third Coast Vinyl, it's doing well so far, he said.

"It's been a little busier that I thought it would be," Pretzer said. "The first week was beyond what I could have ever hoped. ... People have been so gracious. I can't tell you how many people have thanked me for doing this up here. "

Although Pretzer, 49, has lived in Grand Haven since the 80s, he said he's always felt like part of the community in Muskegon.

He taught at Fruitport Community Schools, and then at Muskegon Community College where he remains an adjunct English professor. Over the past 30 years, he's been part of multiple bands, all of which played in Muskegon, and has had various jobs in the Muskegon area.

As a musician, he's best known for playing guitar in the punk rock band " Jim Jones and the Kool-Ade Kids " during the 80s.

The band's name was reference to the mass murder-suicide of more than 900 members of the People's Temple, which was led by James Warren "Jim" Jones. The November 1978 tragedy inspired the term "drinking the Kool-Aid. "

Pretzer said he's embarrassed of the band's name now, but thought it was funny as a teenager.

Now, Pretzer helps organize the Muskegon Writers Series, and is involved in the Muskegon- area in many ways.

The store is located on a block of Third Street that has undergone a transformation in recent years. It includes the Curry Kitchen restaurant, an Asian market, tattoo shop and the new location for the Muskegon Family YMCA.

55 /72 0.9 The Drum’s co-founder on why Do It Day matters at a time of cynicism in marketing The Drum’s co-founder and editor-in-chief Gordon Young has spoken about the value of Do It Day and its ambitions to affect change in the industry over the course of a day at a time when onlookers are increasingly cynical about the state of the advertising industry.

What makes The Drum different from those cynics, Young tells Beet. TV , is that “we are genuinely very excited about how the world is developing; we are very optimistic about the role of digital and tech”. That optimism is reflected in The Drum’s strapline ‘Marketing Can Change the World’, and its event Do It Day, which works to prove this statement.

As part of Do It Day , brands such as Airbnb, Coca Cola and O2 have agreed to issue challenges to the industry to tackle important issues such as encouraging recycling, promoting gender equality and championing local businesses. Ad agencies and creative companies like STV have come on board to offer up their services, as well as companies like IBM and ClearChannel, with the latter offering access to the big digital screens in Times Square and Piccadilly. In total there are 17 challenges from 17 organisations.

“There is an awful lot going on but I think at the end of Do It Day we will really prove that marketing can change the world”, Young said.

The success of Do It Day 2015, and its growth trajectory in the UK and US, is emblematic of an industry crying out for genuine optimism. This year has seen five Cannes Lions awards returned by Grey, Ogilvy & Mather and BBDO, after it was revealed they had been won under false pretenses. Facebook and Dentsu’s separate admissions of irregularities in how they quantify what they say they offer, and what they actually do deliver to brands has fuelled transparency fears between advertisers and their media partners. This cynicism has also greeted consolidation deals such as the proposed AT&T Time Warner deal, and concerns over what business will bid for Twitter.

Speaking on the challenging media market, Young said: “The lessons we have learned is not to fight change, you have to work with the tide and the prevailing conditions to your best advantage. Running a B2B business is the same, the main thing is to focus on your target audience and serve them any way they want to get your information.”

57 /72 0.6 Vox Pop: How do we convince creative investment and talent post-Brexit? Post-Brexit, the creative industry lives in fear of an uncertain future. Global history has been made, and the full impact of not being a part of the EU, will not be known for some time. Amid an uncertain political and economic situation that has rippled across industries globally, The Drum Network has asked its members; how can we convince investors and talent alike to continue to view Britain as a creative hub post- Brexit? Gellan Watt, global brand strategist, agency growth consultant and non-exec, Gellan Watt & Associates

Britain will always be seen as a creative hub - that reputation comes from decades of delivering world-beating creativity. That reputation won’t fade fast. The talent won’t leave overnight. There will be no mass exodus. And there will always be kudos in working for Britain’s best. As a nation and as an industry we do face real challenges from Brexit. We will rise to them. We always do. Frankly, we have no choice. The greatest challenge to our reputation as a creative hub and our ability to retain talent is of course the economics of doing business with us - keeping those barriers low is absolutely critical. Especially for regional agencies, working with international clients. In the meantime, we need to keep doing what we do - the best work in the world.

Jane Hovey, head of planning, Gravity Thinking

We have many reasons to be cheerful post-Brexit.

Creativity

There is a poster at Gravity Thinking which says: "When governments go bad art gets good. " The challenge of Brexit will create new problems for agencies and the industry to solve. As an industry in the UK we excel at coming up with creative solutions to business problems so we could get cheerful about the new creative opportunities new problems will deliver to us. There will be business challenges for brands to do more with less, to engage better with non- European markets and to reframe thinking around varying views of what being British means. We have a wonderful industry, which needs to embrace these challenges, and I look forward to the output.

Accountability

When the economy is shaky there is a drive by clients to see ROI (there is proof that ROI goes up in a recession when people try and spend their way out of it but few people act on it in truth). I believe the recession of the 90’s led to the rise of data driven direct marketing and the dotcom bubble bursting led to more accountability of digital offerings. It has been reported that Brexit is already having an impact on budgets so as an industry we will need to be more accountable. Redefining success and looking closer at metrics could positive for proving the value of marketing in a post digital age full of mobile social innovations yet to prove their business worth.

Understanding consumers

Brexit was a wake up call that people are different even with research it can be easy for people in our industry to forget the lives of real people. Real people who buy the majority of products we market and use the channels we market in daily. Brexit’s reminder that everyone is not London centric and many are disgruntled with the status quo should not be ignored. Let our shock at Brexit be a constant reminder to remove our own self-reference criteria and to look closer at the people we want to engage. Helping inform our thinking to create more effective work. A more realistic view of the customer and how to engage them is a good thing for results, creativity and the credibility of our industry.

The Drum Network, Create Britain team

Britain has the same talent, the same skill set, ability and drive in the creative industry despite the decision to leave the EU. As part of Do It Day , the Drum Network are calling the industry to arms to promote just how great our talent is. From the excellent creative minds behind Gravity Thinking , Dog , Missouri Creative , That Lot and Lab , we have created the concept of ‘Create Britain’. Create Britain is an interactive digital map upon which agencies can 'claim their pin'. Agencies will claim their pin by submitting a short video on what they believe makes British creativity so brilliant.

Another, very important aspect of the Create Britain challenge is the display of inclusiveness that the creative industry must project on the global stage, to encourage overseas talent to come over to the UK. We will be asking agencies, when they submit their video on the Create Britain site, to tick a box saying they will accept an intern from overseas to work in their agency, to encourage further diversity and talent within the UK’s industry. Bringing together agencies from all towns and cities across the UK through ‘Create Britain’ will show the continued strength and diversity of the UK, as a creative force, post-Brexit

To support and safeguard the future of your industry, while raising your own business profile to potential clients and to become part of what will become an internationally recognised movement, please contact [email protected] for more details.

58 /72 8.3 Jakarta, Indonesia, is having a vinyl renaissance All over the place, vinyl is undergoing a renaissance.

In the United States, record sales are on the rise, and pressing plants are working around the clock to keep up with demand. But in Indonesia, the last vinyl pressing plants went out of business in the 1980s, their machines long since sold for scrap metal, with no comeback in sight.

Still, in the capital city of Jakarta, record shops are seeing a new generation of music lovers building their old-school collections, despite soaring prices and limited supply.

On Jalan Surabaya, a street of low-slung buildings in Jakarta that has housed record vendors for decades, a few small shops still sell used records, packed beside others peddling discount luggage and antiques. A man known simply as Lian owns Lian Records. He’s seen vinyl’s boom and bust — and now, boom, again — firsthand.

His father opened a record shop on Jalan Surabaya in 1963, and as a boy in the '70s, Lian helped out with the family business, selling cheap secondhand British and American pop records from a handcart.

Nowadays, Lian’s shop offers mostly CDs and cassettes. However, back in 2007, he began seeing more customers interested in buying vinyl: Besides his usual clientele of old-timers and the occasional tourist, teenagers started coming into his shop to scour the record bins, searching for deals and treasures. Demand has hardly let up since then, but Lian has trouble finding enough records to sell. He adds about five new albums to his inventory each month, and the few domestic records he has in his shop are looking tired, their covers worn and the vinyl scratched.

But on the other side of Jakarta, a market called Pasar Santa tells another story. On the top floor of a traditional produce market, at least a dozen record shops jostle for space alongside hip cafés and clothing boutiques. In Pasar Santa’s record stalls, new and used LPs of all genres — from '80s disco to Detroit techno and bugalú — are in abundant supply, most imported from overseas. By sundown, the shops are brimming with people, and when the Muslim call to prayer floats over the market, “Smoke on the Water” keeps playing.

Most of Pasar Santa’s record sellers are young — in their 20s — and many lean on connections abroad for help building their inventory: a friend who goes to college in San Francisco, or a contact in the U. K. Samson Pho, who owns a shop called Laid Back Blues, says that much of his stock comes from Europe and Japan. Other records are brought back by friends from their travels.

“Sometimes, my friend coming back from U. S., he brought me back some records from the $1 bin, because I can sell it [for] at least $50 or $10 here, at least,” he says.

And that’s in American dollars. At Pho’s shop, a Dizzy Gillespie record goes for about 300,000 Indonesian rupiah, or about $30, and a Three Dog Night LP sells for about the same. Four years ago, Pho says he could buy a record on Jalan Surabaya for less than $1. Now, his customers are lucky to find an LP in his shop that sells for less than $10. The most expensive albums are the ones he tracks down himself — vintage Indonesian recordings that are hard to find elsewhere.

“You know, like the pickers, I go around Indonesia,” Pho says. “I go to a radio station, go to the old label and everything, just to buy the old stocks.”

He holds up a copy of “Shake Me” by the Indonesian group, AKA. In a country where you can get a simple meal for $1, and nearly half the population lives on $2 a day, Pho’s copy of “Shake Me” is priced at around $100. It’s a testament to the value — for collectors anywhere — of a tangible piece of history.

“This is the original copy. This is very heavy, heavy funk,” he says.

Pho’s most precious albums are these hard-won Indonesian releases. In fact, he keeps most of them at home for himself, selling the imported records instead. But it should still come as no surprise that Pho is parting with an original pressing of “Shake Me.”

“I have four of these,” he says, laughing. “That’s why I'm selling it here. But for me personally, the Indonesian kind of music that I really like and I really value — that you will never find at my shop, because I always keep it. That’s the thing.”

60 /72 2.1 'KUWTK': Kris Jenner reacts to Kanye West featuring Caitlyn in 'Famous' music video: 'I was speechless' Keeping Up With the Kardashians kicked off season 12 on Sunday, and took viewers back to The Forum in Inglewood, California for the debut of Kanye West's "Famous" music video in June.

For the first time, fans got to see how the Kardashians initially reacted to the controversial video, and it wasn't too surprising that Kris Jenner didn't love it.

The video features totally nude likenesses of a number of celebrities including Taylor Swift, Amber Rose, Ray J, Rihanna and others, all laying in a giant bed with West, who also appears nude alongside wife Kim Kardashian.

However, it seems the topless likeness of Caitlyn Jenner was the real cause of Kris' anger, as Caitlyn's appearance in the video was kept secret from all the Kardashian-Jenner family members, except for Kim. Caitlyn and Kim were also the only two featured celebs that Kanye notified before releasing the video featuring their likenesses.

See photos of Kris Jenner:

"I was speechless watching it because I didn't know what I was going to be looking at," Kris said of the graphic video. "To see that up on the screen that big was kind of crazy. "

Kris also voiced displeasure at Kim's close relationship with Caitlyn, and told daughter Khloe Kardashian that she was "so pissed" that Kim styled Caitlyn for her appearance at the 2016 ESPY Awards.

Kris raged out at her daughter over the phone, screaming, "Kim, you are a f**king traitor!... You're not going to f**king play this game anymore! " WATCH: Kim Kardashian Called a 'F**king Traitor' by Kris Jenner in Explosive 'KUWTK' Teaser

"I just exploded because I finally was feeling what I needed to feel for so many years," explained Kris, who told Kim that she "expects loyalty" and that she had been "feeling abandoned. "

Kim made up for it by taking her mom on a Pretty Woman -inspired champagne lunch date in the same Beverly Wilshire Hotel suite the iconic movie was filmed in.

"I felt really bad about getting really angry at you, I really did -- it took me by surprise. Even my emotion surprised me," Kris apologized to Kim.

"I don't have anybody to talk to that's been through anything similar, you know? " she continued. "You guys can talk to your girlfriends. As a wife who was with somebody for all that time, that's a lot of memories and a lot of years and a lot of Christmas Eves, and a lot of Father's Days and Mother's Days and Easters. I don't really think about it day-to-day, but for some reason that hit me, I guess, just the wrong way. "

Speaking in a solo interview with the KUWTK cameras, Kris admitted that the last few years have "been challenging. "

"I've always wanted to be there for my kids and have kind of pushed my feelings down below the surface so that I don't have to feel anything," Kris explained. "I think that sometimes you have to feel what's going on inside and I just exploded because I was finally feeling what I needed to feel for so many years and it just all came out in one moment. "

65 /72 65 /72 0.6 Living the Meme: What happened to the One Pound Fish man? Living the Meme: What happened to Azeem Ward and his flute?

“We can talk tomorrow,” reads the message. “And it would be exclusive because I am going to share first time something only with you.”

As far as emails go, this is a good one – not simply because of its content but because it was sent by Muhammad Shahid Nazir Ahmad, a man you probably know better as the singer behind “One Pound Fish”. “Come on ladies, come on ladies,” went the song that shot the then-market trader to fame in April 2012, “Have a, have a look, one pound fish. Very, very good, one pound fish.”

Within months, Nazir had been invited to perform on The X Factor , was signed by Warner Music, and released an official music video that, at the time of writing, has been viewed 29,290,435 times. “I can forget everything in my life but I cannot forget 2012,” he says. “Before 2012 I was nothing.”

Nazir is ringing me from his home in Pakistan, where he returned in December 2012. Headlines at the time were confused – most said he had been deported because working at the market violated his visa, but Nazir himself told the BBC he had only gone home to apply for a French visa in order to perform there. It seems his stay in the UK was brought to an end because of the entertainment he brought to millions, rather than the fish he so famously flogged.

Now, impassioned and booming, but softening his speech with the occasional “my dear”, he tells me a different story.

“I am telling you for the first time, no one knows this,” he says. “I have been refused a British visa two times.”

Nazir tells me he first came to England on a student visa and returned to Pakistan of his own volition three days before it expired. However, when he applied for a new visa, he was rejected on the grounds that he breached his student visa by creating a music video with Warner Music.

“By your own admission, during your time of your previous leave in the UK, you were signed as a singer by an entertainment company,” reads the official refusal document from the UK Border Agency in August 2013. Nazir, however, denies any deliberate wrong doing. “It was technically a mistake, but not made by only one person. Warner Brothers released the music. If I am guilty, I am not the only person,” he says. “The world is not for innocent people.”

A year later, Nazir applied again in order to take part in a film that was going to be made about his life. “I am not satisfied that you are genuinely seeking entry as an entertainer for a limited period as stated by you,” reads the refusal.

“It is a very hard punishment,” says Nazir. “I made British people happy.”

When we speak, Nazir is under the impression he is now banned from applying for a new visa for ten years, but a Home Office spokesperson refutes this, saying he never had a ten-year ban and can apply at any time, and all applications are considered based on their individual merits. The now 35-year-old would like nothing more than to return to England, telling me – twice – that “after One Pound Fish it is my one pound wish”.

“I helped Britain. I did a great thing for British people,” he says. “I helped the one pound currency. You have Americans singing about the pound, Pakistanis singing about the pound, I went to number one in Japan. You have Japanese singing about the pound.

“Theresa May is a lady, I have done something good for ladies. I have done something good for your country,” he says, asking both the Prime Minister and the monarch to consider his cause and allow him back into the UK. “Queen Elizabeth II, you are a very honourable woman. You are the symbol of the pound; I am the singer of the pound.”

It is clear that going viral deeply impacted Nazir, who – despite the visa rejections – bellows “No, no, no, no!” when I ask him if there were any downsides. “It was a great honour,” he says, noting that he has loved singing since he was a child. “People came up to me and asked to talk or for selfies. It is an honour for me that people recognise me. .. People say to me ‘You have a unique fame.’ Like superheroes. Like Spiderman, or Superman, I am Fish Man.”

Although viral fame affected him emotionally, he is financially little better off than before. Nazir now works for his family business in Pakistan, a goods transport company, and produces music on the side, most recently a tribute to Michael Jackson in June. “How can you make money from YouTube, Facebook, iTunes? I had no idea back then,” he tells me. “The person who uploaded the video made money, Warner Brothers made money, I did not make a single penny.”

Warner Music has been contacted for comment on whether it made money from the video, but whether or not Nazir earned anything from it doesn’t matter to the Home Office. “You were signed to Warner Music . . . ” reads the refusal. “Whether you have collected the funds in relation to that contract is immaterial.”

Extract from the UK Border Agency’s visa refusal letter.

It is unclear what will happen to Nazir next, though he is exceedingly grateful when I pass on the Home Office’s message that he has not been banned for ten years, and can apply for a new visa at any time. Asked if he would like to go viral again, Nazir is enthusiastic, and when I ask how, he reveals his true love of Britain. “It is my wish to do something more with pounds,” he says.

“Living the Meme” is a series of articles which explores what happens to people after they go viral. Check out the first in the series here.

To suggest an interviewee for Living the Meme, reach out to Amelia on Twitter . The Sixties had Woodstock. The Nineties had Lollapalooza. The Tens – and, if we’re being honest, just a single year of them – had Azeem's Senior Flute Recital.

If you were inactive on the internet between 12 and 16 May 2015, you’ll be forgiven for not knowing who Azeem Ward is. After setting up a Facebook page for his end of year flute performance, the University of California student was inundated with over 100,000 RSVPs from the United Kindom, along with multiple requests to fly to England and play (for no apparent reason) Darude’s “Sandstorm” in Nando’s. After international news coverage, Ward – as all memes inevitably do – appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss his newfound fame. On 16 May, he had to turn hordes of people away from the 500 seat recital hall, and over 55,000 individuals tuned into a livestream of the event. Then, Ward disappeared. Not from social media, and not from the world, but from the internet’s collective consciousness.

Search interest in "Azeem Ward" over time

“I’d say no,” answers Ward, when I ask him whether, one and a half years later, he still receives any special attention or has any fan interactions. “I’m just regular Azeem now, and I’m okay with that. Regular me is a more focussed person that is not reacting to things that are happening around me.”

Ward is Skyping me from his home in Iowa, where he is getting his master’s degree in flute performance. He spends his time composing flute beatbox songs, learning how to produce music, and teaching a class on flute fundamentals at the university. “A lot of [the students] here in Iowa know what happened but they don’t go like: ‘Oh my God! It’s Azeem!’. It’s just like, ‘Hey, what’s up man? I saw that one thing about you on Jimmy Kimmel ’.”

The original Facebook event page

Ward regained his anonymity when he moved to Iowa, as many of his fellow undergraduate students in California recognised him because he was on the local news. “But the whole viral thing was a UK thing,” he explains, “It wasn’t really around the whole US.”

An Azeem meme

Four months after his famed flute recital, Ward did come to the UK and toured the country to perform as part of various university freshers’ weeks. “That was a crazy time,” he says, “I was over there for five weeks and played 22 shows in 12 different cities, all the way from London to Scotland.” His concerts were popular, though most people came to take a selfie or ask about how the recital happened, and only a few wanted to talk to him about music. Still, Ward profited from the events. “We did make some pretty good money," he says, admitting he earnt around $5,000.

Despite clearly enjoying this time, Ward seems unfazed that his viral fame is now over. His only regrets, he says, are that he didn’t make any connections in the music business while in the UK, and that he didn’t have any social media accounts set up before he went viral, so there was nowhere for people to go to listen to his music. “When you go viral people hold onto that rather than taking you seriously as a musician,” he says. “Sometimes it annoyed me but sometimes I realised that I wouldn’t be there in the first place if it wasn’t for going viral.”

Azeem now, photo courtesy of Azeem Ward

So what advice would Ward give to the next person who finds themselves, unwittingly, the object of the internet’s affection?

“I'd say don't lose sight of what you've already been doing in your life, like keep your focus. I'd say that sometimes in your head you're like ‘Oh man, I have to do this now’, but you've just got to stay focussed on your goals. When you have your own path and you go viral you have a lot of people asking you to do all these different things. It was pretty intense – I’m not used to having a lot of people look at me and my actions, so I was pretty anxious at first. In the end I realised that I came to do what I came to do, and I had to go do it.”

Although Ward doesn’t miss being internet-famous, it is clear that going viral had an impact on him. He recalls the peak of the madness with telling clarity, sharing specific details such as "256 people” clicked attending in "four hours", and “then 512”, before 12,000 people RSVP’d overnight. Mostly, however, he seems very grounded, though he acknowledges it was “out of control” and “really crazy”.

Nothing in the last 100 years has brought people together more than Azeem's Senior Flute Recital

— ed (@edcoy96) May 15, 2015

Perhaps Ward feels this way because he received little in the way of negativity or hate. He fondly discusses memes that were created and art that was drawn about him, and the support of his family and friends. “Even though there were a lot of silly things going on, I managed to make it positive for the school,” he says. “I had no haters. Everyone was like ‘Damn, Azeem. Good job, man’.”

One day, Ward hopes to come back to London, although he is wary of returning. Not because of his viral fame, nor the number of selfies he might have to take with Nando's customers, but because of Brexit. Our conversation, like all post-June conversations, turns swiftly to the topic, and Ward asks me about the economy. “I was thinking about trying to do a doctorate over in London, but if things aren't going to be so good in a few years...”

Ward admits he wouldn’t be bothered if he never went viral again. “When I think of something going viral, I think it has a point in time where there’s so much interest and then it goes away. I’d like to produce material and the attention to keep going up.” So do you want to be famous, I ask? “Do I really want to be famous?” he ponders. “Being famous is okay, I guess. But I want to be is respected and appreciated.”

68 /72 68 /72 2.0 Get to know the moon Charlie Riedel / AP

A couple sits on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River as the full moon rises in the distance Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, in Kansas City, Mo.

By LeeAnn Elias

Monday, Oct. 24, 2016 | 2 a.m.

The moon is around 238,855 miles away from Earth. About 30 Earths could fit between the two. Each year, it moves about 1 inch farther away.

Harvest, blood, full, blue — the moon by any name does not, in fact, shine the same. No matter which phase of the lunar cycle it’s in, however, one constant is that it always shows us the same face. Because of the way the moon and Earth’s fields of gravity interact, the same side is always facing us. In fact, the far side wasn’t even seen by human eyes until the Soviet Luna 3 spacecraft photographed it in 1959. Here’s how it happens.

The moon is a terrestrial body with a molten core, mantle and crust, much like Earth and other solid planets. Because the moon’s atmosphere is thin, we can observe its surface from afar without interference.

Referring to its “dark side” is not accurate, as the entire surface of the moon receives sunlight at some point during the lunar cycle. It’s correct to refer to the two hemispheres as the near side (what we see here on Earth) and far side (hidden from our view). The two look very different.

The near side is home to large swaths of maria, low-elevation areas that used to be filled with lava from ancient volcanoes. They appear darker, while the highlands appear light.

Maria are sparse on the far side. Scientists think it may be because the crust there is thicker, preventing magma from breaking the surface. Many impact craters from meteorites and comets are visible, as the thin atmosphere doesn’t burn them up.

The moon rotates on its axis as it orbits us, the same way the Earth rotates as it orbits the sun. The difference is that the moon’s rotation and orbit are synchronous, meaning they both occur at approximately the same speed. One orbit and one rotation take approximately 28 days.

If you were to view the phases of the moon in time-lapse, however, it would appear to “wobble” in the sky. This is known as libration and is due to the moon’s orbit not being a perfect circle. It rotates slightly slower when it is at perigee (the point in its orbit closest to Earth) and faster when it’s farthest away, at apogee.

The phases of the moon are not precisely timed to its orbit, but sometimes can coincide to make the moon seem especially large (a supermoon) or small (a micromoon).

International law prohibits any country from owning or using the moon or any other celestial body for weapons testing or other military purposes. • Harvest moon, Oct. 16: The first full moon after the autumnal equinox (Sept. 22). Sometimes called the Blood Moon.

• Super full moon, Nov. 14: When a full moon coincides with perigee, it appears about 7percent larger in the sky. Not to be confused with instances when the moon is closer to the horizon and appears larger in the sky. This is an optical illusion caused by Earth’s atmosphere and not related to its position in orbit.

• Penumbral lunar eclipse, Feb. 11, 2017: Visible at moonrise in Nevada, the next lunar eclipse isn’t until next year. It will be a penumbral eclipse, where the moon will pass behind the shadow of the Earth. It won’t totally disappear behind the darkest part (the umbra) of the shadow, though, which happens during a total eclipse.

• Total solar eclipse: Aug. 21, 2017: There will be an annular (where the moon doesn’t cover the entire sun, leaving a bright ring of fire around the moon’s shadow) solar eclipse earlier in 2017, but it won’t be visible in our hemisphere. However, Nevadans will be able to view a total eclipse in August.

But Louisa Johnson is returning to the UK music scene in her own right - after announcing the release of her new single 'So Good' on Monday. The 18- year-old crooner looked incredible in a mesh bra top and shorts, flashing her slender figure and a sexy hint of cleavage as she posed for shots promoting the upcoming hit - which will be available for download on Friday. Scroll down for video The pretty blonde looked stunning in a skimpy mesh bralet and shorts combo, flashing her taut and toned tum for all to see. The low-cut mesh top featured only sparkling silver stars to cover up her modesty, and plunged sexily down her chest to reveal a saucy but subtle hint of bust. Paired with a tiny pair of black denim shorts that cut high up her thigh, the beauty flashed ample amounts of leg and gorgeous glowing skin as she posed radiantly for the single's cover snap. In a further shot Louisa switched to a red velvet co-ord - showing off her trendier and youthful sense of style. The crop top was of a demure high neck but featured chic open shoulders, and was matched with quirky hot pants with a silver zip down the front. Finishing the stylish look the popstar layered a black leather jacket on top emblazoned with gold stars, which she draped casually across her arms. Following on from the Platinum-selling hit Tears with electronic group Clean Bandit, Louisa's toe-tapping new single So Good features dramatic strings against a funky dance beat. The budding blonde is set to perform the track, written by world-renowned producers Steve Mac and Ed Drewett, on the X Factor results show this Sunday. Louisa returns to the stage of the ITV series almost one year after she became the youngest ever champion of the show, at just 17 years old. The Essex native was subsequently signed to Simon Cowell's music label Syco and has been working on her new album, which is due to be released in December, ever since. Talking recently to Capital radio, the singer admitted her new music 'is like a diary, because she wants people to know how she feels'. I’m recording songs that I hope to be performing for the rest of my life - they’ve got to be good. I’m in no rush to release the album, in fact, I’d rather not release it unless I’m 100% happy with every detail.’ Talking of her beau to Notion magazine last month, she gushed: 'I’m completely in love. He’s good; he’s perfect.' Louisa and Daniel are thought to have got together in the later stages of the X Factor live shows - with him attending the final in December alongside her family. She admits that her budding career can be a bit chaotic for their relationship, confessing: 'We’re young, so naturally I want to spend all of my time with him, but right now there’s a lot going on. He’s completely respectful of it, he’s not a bit jealous but proud and supportive of me.' 71 /72 3.1 Chloe Lloyd and Union J star fiancé Josh Cuthbert pack on the PDA in Dubai He proposed during a romantic gondola ride in Venice last November. And Josh Cuthbert and his fiancée Chloe Lloyd looked more loved up than ever as they enjoyed a holiday in Dubai. The Union J singer and the model, both 24, appeared the picture of happiness as they frolicked in the sea. Scroll down for video Chloe showed off her stunning figure in a black two piece bikini. The double strap low slung briefs showed off her slender midriff and delicate swallow tattoo across her ribs. Sitting high on her hips, they made the most of her tanned and toned legs. Showing a glimpse of cleavage, the bralet made the most of her curves, and she accessorised with a delicate gold chain double necklace. Wearing her glossy brunette tresses in loose beachy waves, she showed off her model credentials. And going for bold brows and a touch of lipgloss, she completed her ensemble with quirky round sunglasses. Meanwhile boyband member Josh looked every inch the heart throb. Showing off his muscular stomach and toned arms, the star wore black swimming trunks. With his hair and beard perfectly groomed, Josh and and his fiancée made the perfect sizzling duo. Enjoying a smooch in the sea before the singer kissed his girl's hand affectionately, the duo couldn't keep their hands off each other. The You Got It All singer got down on one knee and proposed to model Chloe whilst the pair enjoyed a romantic gondola ride in Italy last year. Captioning a photograph of the stunning ring on Instagram, she wrote: 'My best friend and soulmate totally got down on one knee on a Gondola in Venice and I obviously said YES!' She added: 'Erm whaaaaaat!!!!! I really wish I had the champagne emoji right about now…. I love you @joshcuthbert_uj (sic).' Whilst Josh uploaded a photo of the pair on the gondola and added: 'SHE SAID YES!!!???? happiest/luckiest guy in the whole world. 'I love you @chloelloyd.' Meanwhile, Chloe opened up about the pair's romance and claimed they are both 'soppy freaks' last year. She said: 'Josh is really romantic, but we're equally romantic I think. We are like soppy freaks. 'We've been together for nearly a year now, and even though we live together, we're just having so much fun together right now. We are so cringe with each other. 'I work a lot and I'm always travelling, so when we do get free time, we like to go out for dinner and then chill, like last night we watched about five episodes of True Detective until like, 4am.' Not that she was alone in her happiness, of course. Josh himself indulged in the attention on Twitter, saying: 'Seriously, thank you to you all for such lovely comments about Chloe & I's engagement. 'You're all lovely and it means the frickin' world.' Chloe has been modelling since she was 17 after winning a competition to be the face of Bank clothing. After signing with Storm models in 2011, she moved over to Select Model Management late last year. She was soon joined by her pop star fiance Josh who joined the books at Select earlier this year. Meanwhile, Josh and his band have signed with new management and planning a return to the charts following the departure of George Shelley earlier this year.
