16. Abstract

This report documents in two volumes the editing conventions and reference information used in processing Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation reported case vehicles into a time-shared accident data bank. Volume I (Editing Manual) uses an annotated "Collision Perfor- mance and Injury Report" Revision 3 to document editing conventions and new code values. The text documents the editing procedure and the interpretations of each question (variable) on the CPIR form and its supplements. Volume I1 (Reference Information) is a compilation of reference information (e.g., original steering column angles) available to the data editors.

COLLISION DEFORMATION CLASSIFICATION - SAE 52240 SAE Retommended Practice

Roport of Au~omotiroSafety Gmrntitee igprovd Imnuu, 1971 and revucd Frbcwry 1972.

I. Purpose md Scbpr-The purpose and scope of this SAE Recam. mended Practice is to provide a basis for dawifiation of the mtent of deformation caused by vehicle accidents on the highway. It is nmsary to classify collision contact deformation (opposed to induced deforma- tion) so that the accident deformation may be 5egrepttd into rather narrow linliu. Studies of collision deformation anthen be performed on one or many data banks with assurance that the clau under study are of essentially the same type.' It also is an expression, useful to penons engaged in automobile ~fety,to appropriately describe a field.drmaged vehicle with mn- dvnar in their oral and written communications. Although this cluti. fication system was established primarily for use by professional team investigating accidenu in depth, other groups may also find it uxful. nc. 2 The dassihcation system consists of seven chancten, three numeric and four alphameric, arranged in a specific order. Each chanacr 29 Dcformatioa Location and <3nrificatbo Ccdc-Column 3 h dacribes specific deformation detail concerning the direction, location. used. the size of the area, and extent, which combined together form a Thh dunner of a clami6cation exprasion bmdly definu which desuiptive compmite of the damaged vehicle. 2. Clorn'fication of Colli~ion Damage-Vehicle wllbion damage h classified in the following respects: 4.1 Direction of Principal Force at Impact-Columna 1 and 2 arc used. The principal force ir the force that caused the crush and ahnt metal displncemeht on the damaged vehicle. The direction of the prindpal force is determined by the resultant of forces acting on the vehicle at the point of application. The direc~ionof thc principal force is desig. honf nated bv reference to hour sectors on a conventional clock face pori Rlght side tioned over the point of application. lack Irerr) hhJ6 The clock face is assumed to be in a plane referenced to the hori. ?a 0 zontal plane of the car. EA COLUMN MEASUREMENTS FOR ACRS EQUIPPED VEHICLES

The two EA column types discussed here are used in vehicles presently equipped with air cushion restraint systems (ACRS). Current General Motors ACRS equipped vehicles* employ EA steering columns similar to those used in other late model GM vehicles. Certain changes in the GM EA column design were necessary to meet increased strength requirements of the ACRS. The most signifi- cant physical change is a shortening of the lower tube jacket to fit a new guide bracket. This necessitated changing the "thumb- nail" which was characteristic of previous non-ACRS vehicle columns to what is now termed "thumb bumps" which fit up against the lower clamp (see Figure A). Column compression, or collapse, is measured from the lower edge of the larger, upper tube (jacket) to the "thumb bump." This is shown as dimension D. The original dimension is C and is 7-1/16 inches. Column compression equals C minus D. This steering column should be coded as Type (6) , "Other: Step-ball. "

Front of Vehicle

FIGURE P.

Ford Motor Company ACRS vehicles* were initially factory equipped with only a passenger bag. Some are not equipped with a driver bag, and some have only the driver bag, which was in- stalled after the vehicle left the factory. The EA column used is the same slotted variety used in many other Ford vehicles (Type 5), having an original dimension of 9.5 inches. The com- pression, or collapse, is measured in the same manner as on non- ACRS Ford vehicles, i.e., the compression would equal 9.5 inches minus the collapsed length of the slotted section. *GM ACRS vehicles include the larger models of Buick, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac, and a special test fleet of 1973 Chevrolet Impalas. Ford Motor Company ACRS vehicles were a test fleet of 1972 Mer- curys . STEERINGCOLUMN EA: DIAGRAMS

The 78 is what engineers refer to as Aspect Ratio. The I TREAD Aspect Ratio is determined by the relationship: Tire Section Height Tire Section Width Using that calculation, you can see that the wider the tire section, the smaller the Aspect Ratio. As a general guitle, an Aspect Ratio of 78 (as in F78-15) is con- sidcred standard, while an Aspect Ratio of 70 indicates a Wide-Oval and an Aspect Ratio of 60 indicates a Super-Wide-Oval tire. The belted bias-plj tire is a bias-ply tire (as Saometimesyou inay see an R included with the tire shown in top drau:l~glwith a belt of material designation, such as HR78-15. In some cases the above body type symbols do not accurately identify the body type. For example, it is possible for a vehicle classified as a 37 - 2 Dr. Coupe or Sedan, to actually be a Hardtop because it does not have upper B pillars. In this case the vehicle should be coded as a Hardtop. The following 1973 vehicles either differ from the above classification or need to have body types identified by looking at the vehicles: (Footnoted from above) *37 225 Coupe 2 Dr. HT, code 37 - Coupe or Hardtop *39 Chevrolet Impala Sport Sedan 4 Dr., code 39 - Sedan or Hardtop Chevrolet Caprice Classic Sport Sedan 4 Dr., code 39 - Sedan or Hardtop *47 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe 2 Dr., code 47 - Coupe or Hardtop *49 Cadillac Sedan De Ville, code 49 - Hardtop *57 Buick Le Sabre Coupe 2 Dr. Hardtop, code 57 - Coupe or Hardtop Buick Le Sabre Coupe Custom 2 Dr, Hardtop, Code 57 - Coupe or Hardtop Buick Le Sabre Custom, code 57 - Coupe or Hardtop *87 Chevy Camero, code 87 - Coupe Chevy Camero type LT, code 87 - Coupe For 1974 vehicles, whenever possible look at the vehicle to decide whether it is a hardtop or a sedan or coupe.
