Quest for Literary Selfhood in Contemporary Canadian English Literature Abdus Salam Khalis ∗ Abstract Despite being exceptionally rich in land, resources and developmental indexes, Canada has been struggling since long for establishing its due social and cultural identity. The challenge primarily comes from the engulfing influence of Canada’s southern neighbor i.e. The United States of America, in the guise of Pan-Americanism or North-American continentalism. Literary authors and critics have been at the fore-front in feeling and resisting this adverse and overshadowing influence, and have launched from time to time powerful movements to assert their literary selfhood as a nation. Critically evaluating the aesthetic and literary endeavours of enlightened Canadians for this purpose, this paper focuses on the contribution made for achieving that goal during roughly the last half century. It contends that despite having distinct creative and imaginative identities, literary and artistic movements are inherently influenced by broader contexts — social and political phenomena in particular. The contexts that have most substantially influenced the above-mentioned quest for literary selfhood include multiculturalism, Trans-Canadianism, political egalitarianism and literary liberalism. Keywords: Multiculturalism, Trans-Canadianism, Literary selfhood, Canadian English literature Canada’s known history is marked by divergent colonial, continental, hemispherical and global pulls, either occurring successively or existing simultaneously. Despite being the largest country of the two American continents, having the longest border in the world between two countries with the United States, topping the list of the most multicultural and immigrant-friendly nations, and having both English and French as its official languages, it has retained for centuries an unparalleled allegiance to Britain. -

Banting Preface Canada’s new Conservative government has a short list of priority policies, and it is moving quickly to fulfil the campaign promises made about them. But another theme in the Conservative campaign of 2005/06, and in the par- ty’s pronouncements since its formation, is that of “open federalism.” This attractive slogan may represent a new stance toward the other levels of gov- ernment, and the provinces in particular. But much about open federalism is unclear. What does the concept mean? Is it distinctive, and if so, how is it different from previous models of Canadian federalism? What does it mean in theory, and what are its practical implications for Canadian public policy- making and the operation of intergovernmental relations? To address these questions, the Institute of Intergovernmental Relations engaged several experts to bring different perspectives to bear in exploring the concept of open federalism. -

Impressions and perceptions of Aboriginal peoples Importance of Aboriginal peoples to Canada Most Canadians say Aboriginal history and culture are a defining characteristic of what makes the country unique, but it is not what most think of top-of-mind. The public is more likely to emphasize the country’s multiculturalism, health care system, and its land and geography. Non-Aboriginal Canadians perceive a complex web of What makes Canada unique? attributes that make up the country’s national identity. When asked, unprompted (without being offered response Multiculturalism/diversity 43 options), to identify what they think makes Canada unique, Land/geography 17 Aboriginal peoples and culture is among the responses, Freedom/free country/democracy 14 but well down the list. The change in constructions of official Canadian identity was due to pressures from an ongoing dialogue in Canadian society that reflected the larger geo-political shifts taking place during the period. This dialogue helped shape the political discussion, from one focused on maintaining an out-dated national identity to one that was more representative of how many Canadians understood Canada to be. This change in political opinion accordingly transformed the official identity of the nation-state of Canada. Fabulous words. Now let’s make it a reality. Bill C-6, as written, is but a start- it doesn’t get Canada to the Promised Land. If passed into law, unequal rights will continue, resulting in different classes of Canadian citizen- some with more rights than others. There will also be people denied citizenship altogether due to ongoing discrimination within the Act. My point in the following discussion is to exemplify the confusion and unjust legislation that bonds us together as Canadians. Trying to explain our current citizenship act is easy vs. deciding who under the law qualifies to call themselves Canadians, and why. For example, Canadian citizenship as we know it is an amalgamation of all the previous citizenship and immigration legislation going back more than 100 years. As such, the current Act is not a complete code for citizenship and nationality in that certain provisions of the 1947 Act must still be read as unrepealed. The authority for this is the Interpretation Act 1985 (44[h]), which specifies that provisions of a repealed Act must be read as unrepealed if those provisions are required to give effect to the Current Act. -

Copyright 2013, The Concord Review, Inc., all rights reserved THE ROOTS OF FRENCH CANADIAN NATIONALISM AND THE QUEBEC SEPARATIST MOVEMENT Iris Robbins-Larrivee Abstract Since Canada’s colonial era, relations between its Fran- cophones and its Anglophones have often been fraught with high tension. This tension has for the most part arisen from French discontent with what some deem a history of religious, social, and economic subjugation by the English Canadian majority. At the time of Confederation (1867), the French and the English were of almost-equal population; however, due to English dominance within the political and economic spheres, many settlers were as- similated into the English culture. Over time, the Francophones became isolated in the province of Quebec, creating a densely French mass in the midst of a burgeoning English society—this led to a Francophone passion for a distinct identity and unrelent- ing resistance to English assimilation. The path to separatism was a direct and intuitive one; it allowed French Canadians to assert their cultural identities and divergences from the ways of the Eng- lish majority. A deeper split between French and English values was visible before the country’s industrialization: agriculture, Ca- Iris Robbins-Larrivee is a Senior at the King George Secondary School in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she wrote this as an independent study for Mr. Bruce Russell in the 2012/2013 academic year. 2 Iris Robbins-Larrivee tholicism, and larger families were marked differences in French communities, which emphasized tradition and antimaterialism. These values were at odds with the more individualist, capitalist leanings of English Canada.
