View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Helsingin yliopiston digitaalinen arkisto An Artaudian and Brechtian Analysis of The Living Theatre’s The Brig: A Study of Contradictory Theories in Practice On a January evening in 1963 the stage director Julian Beck received a play entitled The Brig and immediately decided that it would be the next production his avant-garde troupe, The Living Theatre, was to produce. Written by Kenneth Brown, The Brig is a semi-autobiographical account of Brown’s harrowing experience in a Marine Corps prison while he was stationed at Mt. Fujiyama in Japan between 1954-1957.1 The production opened on May 15, 1963 under the direction of Beck’s wife and company co- founder, Judith Malina, and would ultimately become a signature work in The Living Theatre’s repertoire. Theatre critics readily recognized the piece’s use of a highly visceral and emotionally engaging theatrical form in dialectic conjunction with a socio/political content that attacked society’s various systems of hierarchical authority. New York Newsday described the performance as, “Shattering! Picasso’s Guernica or a Hiroronymous Bosch painting come to life,” while Variety magazine pointed out that it was “written with relentless fury…a searing indictment of man’s inhumanity to man.” The acclaimed theatre academic Robert Brustein perhaps captured the evening best when he wrote: An activist play designed to arouse responsibility…This ruthless documentary becomes an act of conscience, decency, and moral revolt in the midst of apathy and mass inertia. If you can spend a night in THE BRIG, you may start a jailbreak of your own.2 The Brig left its mark on the American theatre, as it was seminal in the development of the New York City avant-garde of the 1960s, and demonstrated The Living Theatre’s effective use of experimental performance as a source of political action. -

GENE FRIEDMAN 3 Dances What is a dance? In 3 Dances, Gene Friedman attempts to answer just that, by presenting various forms of movement. The film is divided into three sections: “Public” opens with a wide aerial shot of The Museum of Modern Art’s Sculpture Garden and visitors walking about; “Party,” filmed in the basement of Judson Memorial Church, features the artists Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Robert Rauschenberg, and Steve Paxton dancing the twist and other social dances; and “Private” shows the dancer Judith Dunn warming up and rehearsing in her loft studio, accompanied by an atonal vocal score. The three “dances” encompass the range of movement employed by the artists, musicians, and choreographers associated with Judson Dance Theater. With its overlaid exposures, calibrated framing, and pairing of distinct actions, Friedman’s film captures the group’s feverish spirit. WORKSHOPS In the late 1950s and early 1960s, three educational sites were formative for the group of artists who would go on to establish Judson Dance Theater. Through inexpensive workshops and composition classes, these artists explored and developed new approaches to art making that emphasized mutual aid and art’s relationship to its surroundings. The choreographer Anna Halprin used improvisation and simple tasks to encourage her students “to deal with ourselves as people, not dancers.” Her classes took place at her home outside San Francisco, on her Dance Deck, an open-air wood platform surrounded by redwood trees that she prompted her students to use as inspiration. In New York, near Judson Memorial Church, the ballet dancer James Waring taught a class in composition that brought together different elements of a theatrical performance, much like a collage. -

For a brief period in the early 1960s, a group of choreographers, visual artists, composers, and filmmakers made use of a local church to present performances that Village Voice critic Jill Johnston declared the most exciting new developments in dance in a generation. Redefining the kinds of movement that could count as dance, the Judson participants—Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs, Philip Corner, Bill Dixon, Judith Dunn, David Gordon, Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Fred Herko, Robert Morris, Steve Paxton, Rudy Perez, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Rauschenberg, Carolee Schneemann, and Elaine Summers, among others—would go on to profoundly shape all fields of art in the second half of the 20th century. Taking its name from the Judson Memorial Church, a socially engaged Protestant congregation in New York’s Greenwich Village, Judson Dance Theater was organized as a series of open workshops from which its participants developed performances. Together, the artists challenged traditional understandings of choreography, expanding dance in ways that reconsidered its place in the world. They employed new compositional methods to strip dance of its theatrical conventions, incorporating “ordinary” movements—gestures typical of the street or home, for example, rather than a stage—into their work, along with games, simple tasks, and social dances to infuse their pieces with a sense of spontaneity. Judson Dance Theater: The Work Is Never Done highlights the ongoing significance of the history of Judson Dance Theater, beginning with the workshops and classes led by Anna Halprin, Robert Ellis Dunn, and James Waring and exploring the influence of other figures working downtown such as Simone Forti and Andy Warhol, as well as venues for collective action like Judson Gallery and the Living Theatre. -

Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of cultural production provide the theoretical tools to approach the company as a cultural producer and not only as theatre artists. Te Living Teatre has produced largely unpopular avant-garde and political theatre for seventy years. I argue that the company’s early years demonstrate a growing reserve of symbolic capital that helps explain the company’s longevity. Furthermore, the manner in which certain events in the company’s history have been mythologized, by company members, critics, and scholars, has led to some historically inaccurate accounts. In particular, accounts of the closing of the company’s production of Te Brig in 1963 and the subsequent trial of Beck and Malina in 1964 have often been infuenced by an acceptance of company member’s anecdotal, “tall tales” approach to history rather than historical evidence and archival documents. -

Teresa Choate, Ph.D., Kean University Keywords: Antonin Artaud, theatre, Theatre of Cruelty, Dionysus in '69, The Living Theatre Page 1 of 24 Abstract Theatre actors have been progressively taking ideas from other artists and building on them since the concept of theatrical performance began. It is important then, for each group to look at the artists who have come before and either emulate them, clarify their work, or create new work themselves. Henrik Ibsen, a 19th century Norwegian playwright and director, later reached great acclaim for his ground-breaking work, A Doll’s House. For this and some of his other works (e.g. Hedda Gabler and Ghosts), Ibsen is commonly known as the Father of Realism. His plays brought true life onstage, and he sought to teach the audience a moral lesson. Ibsen’s work propelled realism into the forefront, which, after a time, became outdated and new styles of theatre emerged. Page 2 of 24 Introduction As theatre artists tired of the realism brought into play by Ibsen and his contemporaries, later theatre artists, such as Ellen Stewart of La MaMa and Joseph Chaikin of the Open Theatre, began to forge new paths into what they believed theatre could be if the art form steered away from convention. In the United States, new anti-theatrical establishment mentality stemmed from the works of Antonin Artaud, a 20th century French theorist who seemed to fail at all he attempted. -

Ill ABSTRACT The social and cultural upheaval of the 1960s spawned a wide range of "alternative" theatre companies concerned with finding a solution to what they perceived as the imminent death of theatre in the United States. The Performance Group, under the direction of Richard Schechner, proved one of the most important. The study is presented in three sections. Section one sets forth the history of TPG, the theory of environmental theatre, and a study of influences upon the company's work. Section two examines the productions Dionysus in 69, Makbeth, and Commune with regard to their development from the inital idea through performance, including descriptions of the physical environments, acting problems, and performance methodology. -

They know that Hamlet and Lear are gay; Gaiety transfiguring all that dread. — William Butler Yeats, “Lapis Lazuli” (1938) Fierce, yet compassionate; opinionated, yet happy to listen and engage; impassioned, yet imbued with reason; political, yet open to ideas not her own; sure of her ends, yet Talmudic in arguing the means to those ends; small of stature, yet grand in effect; regal, not haughty. Judith Malina! She cut through fogs of shillyshally. She knew — or gave the impression that she knew — where she came from, where she was, and where she was going. Judith lived a long, often difficult life in the (Living) theatre. She lived that life in partner- ship with Julian Beck, then with Hanon Reznikov and Julian, then after Julian’s death in 1985, with Hanon until his death in 2008. These were her closest work-and-love partners. But Judith was also — most ardently and totally — in loving symbiosis with the Living Theatre from (at least) her 21st birthday, 4 June 1947, when she wrote in her diary: “[...] the earliest plans for the Living Theatre, the most important work of my life, for which I am now preparing” (1984:1). Attacked, imprisoned, beleaguered, dismissed or savaged by (some) critics, artists, scholars, and journalists, Judith suffered. -

Text Matters, Number 9, 2019 http://dx.doi.org/10.18778/2083-2931.09.23 Magdalena Szuster University of Łódź Theater Without a Script— Improvisation and the Experimental Stage of the Early Mid-Twentieth Century in the United States A BSTRACT It was in the mid-twentieth century that the independent theatrical form based entirely on improvisation, known now as improvisational/ improvised theatre, impro or improv, came into existence and took shape. Viola Spolin, the intellectual and the logician behind the improvisational movement, first used her improvised games as a WPA worker running theater classes for underprivileged youth in Chicago in 1939. But it was not until 1955 that her son, Paul Sills, together with a college theater group, the Compass Players, used Spolin’s games on stage. In the 1970s Sills made the format famous with his other project, the Second City. Since the emergence of improv in the US coincides with the renaissance of improvisation in theater, in this paper, I will look back at what may have prepared and propelled the emergence of improvised theater in the United States. Hence, this article is an attempt to look at the use of improvisation in theater and performing arts in the United States in the second half of the 20th century in order to highlight the various roles and functions of improvisation in the experimental theater of the day by analyzing how some of the most influential experimental theaters used improvisation as a means of play development, a component of actor training and an important element of the rehearsal process.
